Hi guys I study in the UK and recently got offers from both HKU(IBGM) and UST(GBUS). I know they re both very good programs but I’m having real difficulties choosing which one to go to! anyone in the same situation or is actually studying at HKU/UST doing global business? any and all advice very much appreciated!

do you guys recommend emailing them about the offer? or waiting for it…

same question as jbauer24. I applied to both HKU and HKUST on dec 19th and still haven’t heard from them. both my apps have under consideration for all 3 programs still… should i email or call them?

Thank you for the response, guys!
Cept I’m kinda worried if I were to email them, cause I’m not exactly sure how to ask. I really don’t want to jeopardize my chances, so maybe I’ll give it another month? Most of my apps come out this month either way, but still it’s so frustrating! =(

Hi guys!
I needed to ask a couple of questions.
Firstly, I got a full tuition scholarship from HKUST yesterday. Does HKUST also provide scholarships for room and board?
Also, it says in the acceptance letter that I have to accept this offer by March 16. Does this mean that I have to enroll by March 16? But how is that possible, since most of the US colleges I applied to don’t reply till the end of March. What should I do?

Hey guys, I just emailed HKU’s admissions office and they told me that anyone who hasn’t received an offer or decision from HKU can email the faculty that you have applied for.

@freakozoid
which program did u get accepted for and when did u apply?

I got into Electronic Engineering, and I applied in mid-December and had my interview two weeks ago.

@jy93

hey , what bout late applicants?? why would admissions direct us to specific faculties huh

I just got into HKU today! Social Science faculty!

@choongy

not too sure about late applicants. admissions direct us to specific faculties because i think they are in charge of the admissions.

@putturani

when did u apply? u get an interview?

nope, no interview and I am a non-JUPAS candidate (since I live in HK but don’t go to an international school). I applied on 30th december, which is the deadline. I got a conditional offer saying I have to get at least level 4 in IB English A1 HL and 36 in IB overall.

@minkey- not in the same situation, but as an international student, I didn’t consider HKUST mainly because it’s relatively far from the city, it’s less international than HKU, and HKU is a more well-rounded school.

Most of you guys are applying for business right? Any more aspiring social scientists?

hey putturani and freakozoid. did you guys receivce any scholarships?

Yeah, I got a full-tuition scholarship from HKUST (HK$100000 per year).

god dammit i applied dec 19th with ib score as well but still don’t have any results yet…

Nope, no scholarships. I didn’t know HKU gave them. What did you apply for Jy93 and choongy?

I applied for economics and finance for first choice for HKUST and HKU

@freakozoid- you can accept the offer and then later withdraw it. If you find another more appealing college, you can also pay your deposit to that one. Note that sacrificing some money will definitely be involved.

actually my dad teaches at HKU and I go there quite a lot

about applying

the really important thing to remember is that HKU doesn’t send your application to all three faculties you apply to. The first choice gets it first and they take their time evaluating your application, so unless they decide they want you or don’t want you, the second and third choices will never see your application. I think in general the Business school do everything first, and the science department (especially medicine, who sometimes do interviews in late august and give out offers right before you fly off to another continent) is always the slowest.

about interviews

for international students they really like people with lots of ECAs so it’s good to have something to talk about during the interview. they actually asked me what my hobbies are. dot.dot.dot. they tend to invite people overseas to skype/phone interviews first before they deal with local non-jupas applicants (IB, international schools) I mean, I got my interview early Feb and my friends doing IB in HK get their interviews sometime in March. This is for IBGM, not sure about other programs. But then again my friend got her interview invitation for medicine in august.

about the campus

HKU’s the only uni on Hong Kong Island and is in the central western district - mainly residential area for upper middle-middle class, quite close to the central commercial district (Central, Admiralty). The only downside is that the buildings are scattered across the western bit of the island (main campus in central western district, sports facilities closer to the southern district, another sportsground and the medicine faculty, and soon, the dentistry faculty in the southern district, and the three main dormitories dotted along the way) all of these locations are however, conveniently covered by about 3 minibuses and each journey should be no more than 15 minutes.

the new buildings are quite nice, but the old building - the main campus is a bit rundown and it kind of smells during the summer because it’s so humid. The food is average - the main canteen serves food from a really big fast food chain in hong kong, so it is decent, and there are starbucks and oliver’s super sandwiches (if it is still around)

social life

hong kong’s main party area - lankwai down in central is about 20 minutes away. and HKU people do sometimes organize events down there. HKU has more international/non-local students than any other university (if you don’t take mainland students into account. i.e. UST and CUHK have quite a lot of mainland students) and almost all of the best secondary students in HK go for HKU, so they might appear a bit arrogant and snobbish, but they are generally nice people.

dormitories

I have stayed in Star Hall before, the rooms are really nice (bigger than HKUST’s rooms, my brother studies there) but then this is a relatively new dormitory. Normally when you apply for accomodation they will need to know where you live and if it’s not too far away they won’t give you a room. If you don’t have a permanent address in HK then that shouldn’t be a problem. if you really want to live in halls, however, and you don’t qualify, you can always apply to St. John’s, which is the only dormitory that doesnt care about where you live. The only thing they care about is whether you work hard and play hard or is very good at sports, and they expect you to be very loyal to your hall - St. Johns. The admission panel is just a bunch of students so they will look for people that they think they can have fun with.

Well hope this helps and I don’t really go to HKU I just go there quite a lot and my dad and my friends tell me things so feel free to correct me!
