HKU or HKUST

Just got “Under consideration - For consideration under main round” I guess that’s a deferral.
I’m an American student. My SAT was 2190, 770 in Mandarin, 730 in Math 2.
I’m just wondering what I did wrong…especially in the year where admission is apparently the easiest it’ll ever be. Does anyone know if they admit deferred students often? Or should I consider this a rejection…

@turnipseed

just curious what major did u apply for?

Science and Biomedical science

ahh ok just wondering why do you say this is the year admission will be the easiest it will ever be?

Therefore, in 2012 only, the chance of you being admitted to Asia’s No.1 University (QS WUR 2011) is much higher than it was in 2011, or, indeed, will be in 2013! Furthermore, the number of available scholarships will be doubled as well, so that students from all backgrounds will be able to join HKU, so long as you have excellent academic standards, of course!

Pulled from the HKU website. Anyone know if they take appeals or anything?

Congrats!
@eyeshield23 did you also apply for fast track?

@ eyeshield23 : oh wow congrats! I am also applying! Do you mind posting your stats?
And what’re the conditions?

I’m in the same situation, deferred by HKU for fast-track. It’s so strange that they defer nearly everyone. The high school I am going to sends 7-10 students a year to HKU. It is very high as the high school is not in Hong Kong. People taking IB with score of only 39 got full scholarship or something like that. And this year I got a relatively high IB score and quite high scores on other standard testing, but I was deferred…

I sent an email to them asking if there was anything I could do to increase my chances of being admitted and they said my application was still being considered under fast-track…yet the application status page said I had been deferred. I’m very confused now…
Really, I hate to play the ‘why didn’t I get in’ card but…I felt that my scores very above their averages…It must be because I’m white! jkjk

Just some quick replies to previous posts

Don’t be too down if you are deferred, thats just like saying you applied to Ivys and you got deferred, at least you aren’t rejected. **Plus, it really depends on which major you have applied to. (with emphasis)

Biomedical Sciences, for example is a pilot course and hence it would be the natural thing for them to compare potential HK candidates, unless of course you are a stellar applicant. Mandarin from SAT II doesnt help imo. Medical School in HK is world class fyi and hence the selectivity. MBBS and Pharmacy are among the top 5 most selective programme in HKU and admitted from the top 3%~ from the local cohort in the past year.

HKBU and CUHK are good for journalism, in that order according to the HK reputations, but you will wish to consider international exposure - eg. HKU, and balance out

HKU’s Actuarial Science admits from the top 1% from the HK local pool, CUHK and UST are less selective - if they have that programme, not as prestigious or good definitely, havent really heard my peers talking about it.

I have never heard of a successful appeal.

2 cohorts are admitted this year because HK is in the midst of an education reform. This means if you are “less selective” you could be placed in the 4 year cohort instead of the 3 year cohort, nonetheless, it can be said that you are at least considered for the “less selective” cohort"

Hope that answers some of the questions.

Just want to know… how long should the personal statement be? Because it didn’t say on the application form online so I assume that it can be of any length, but what is a reasonable length? Or how long was your essays (for those who applied)

mine was 800 words long… It should be as long as you have enough to write about?
But beyond 1000 it is just way too long

ugh now idk if i actually got in or not the system says conditional offer but hku has yet to email me and tell me what these conditions are :(

just curious did anyone else get this email? http://www.als.hku.hk/admission/HKU_ecard.gif

Hi!

I applied to HKU for bachelors in Economics as my first preference and Bachelors of Arts as my second… I didn’t apply for fast track admissions but applied in October itself.
I havent sent the SAT scores as of now. Does HKU consider January SAT scores? Or will it be too late by then?
Also, when do they call students for interview who applied in the main round?
Thanks!

Reply re: congrats! did you apply for fast Track?

yes. I applied fast track

@jcw895 does it say conditional offer for you on the website?

@bluelovexD Thanks! :slight_smile: I’m at about 600+ so should be around 800 when i finish too :D

Actually, I like to say that HKU admissions for people applying with the Non-JUPAS (international students, community college students) system might be less this year since they went over quota last year. But it depends on which subject you apply for. A local tip is that if you really want to get in, apply for their newer opened programs like Law & Lit etc. (though you have to be qualified, of course).

Oh and on the subject of HKUST vs HKU. HKU > HKUST in terms of ranking. HKUST might be > than HKU in terms of Science, and for sure they’re very good at business but not as famous as City University.

HKU is on the overall a good university for Arts, Engineering, Science, etc. I guess you could say it’s a whole package.

Hi, I applied for CUHK & HKU September 2012 intake from Malaysia. All I need is a blunt, honest reply on my chances of getting into even a regular Business BBA program in either of the respected unis. Here’s what I have and sent for their perusal:

SPM Malaysia(GCE O-Level equivalent) : 10A’s, 1B

GCE AS-Level : 5B’s ( 3’s 79%, 2’s 74%)

GCE A-Level : Results unreleased but if I am lucky I
would get 2A’s and 1B at best.

I was very active in extra-curricular activities in high school, sent more than 10 translated certs for them but don’t know how much part it plays in my overall application though. :(

So what are my honest chances in your personal opinion? Please just give it to me! I need something to further evaluate my chances and before I can carry out any more future plans for myself. Thanks!
