@promegranate You would definitely want to improve your SAT score. Law programs in HK are ultra competitive. I’d say you would need at least 2100 to have a realistic shot. Hope this helps.

I heard that the usual minimum accepted SAT is 1800-1900, wish you all the best!! =D
Regarding the scholarship, I think you should send an email to the admission office…

A question to all who have applied to HKUST.

I got an email from a person from HKUST’s admission a few days ago saying that they have started reviewing my application, and that from now on I should contract him/her directly regarding my application. What does this mean? Can I expect to know my results in a few weeks?

@paul0730

when did you apply to hkust? r u an international student?

Yes I’m an international student. I submitted my application in October. Any idea?

Thanks to both hulkhogan88888 and KennethLee. Thank you for your advice. I emailed the admissions office and they said they would reopen the scholarship site for later… don’t know what that means. I am really nervous now because there is no way I can retake SAT. Does HKU look at standardized testing that strictly?? Many American colleges don’t even consider SAT scores anymore. But i am sure you probably know more about HKU more than I do.

Good luck to all of you who are still waiting for the result!!!

just got admission offer from HKUST civil and environment engineering. did not mention about any scholarship. need to pay $20000 deposit.

@jcw895

Wow that is fast for HKUST. When did you apply?

@20k deposit??? WHATT. NO wayyy
i thought the other person mistyped zeros or something :O

@paul0730

not a clue, sorry! i’m a local student with international qualifications…

i applied hkust in Oct 2012.

yes, the deposit is $20,000(HK Currency). same for hku.

I see. I assume you are a local applicant with international qualifications? Because usually local applicants get their offer first.

No. I am American born and raised in the U.S.
I just got an offer from CUHK Financial and Actuarial Analysis (IFA)/Quantitative Finance (QFN). Need to pay hk$10000 deposit.

@ winning93

CUHK scholarships come out really late, not with the offer.
Im BBA, i got my scholarships in July LOL

Thanks jcw895! I hope I will get some good news as well.

@lovelylady haha cool.Thx. I really want scholarship so was just curious.

@jcw895 hey are we supposed to wait for hard copy of the admission offer letter to come by post as well? Usually, if we get into a university, don’t they send you the letter by post too?

i did receive offer package by postal mail from hku after the email notice. however, we do not have to wait for the offer by mail to respond.
re scholarship, here is the info i got:
hku: the offer letter clearly stated ‘no scholarship’ so i don’t think it will be given to me later.
ust: i called the admission office and the lady told me that if scholarship was not mentioned in the letter, that meant no scholarship.
cuhk: i have not called. It’s good to see the posting by @lovelylady that scholarship was given to her in July.

anyone get an offer for hkust? feeling anxious… haha

@promegranate I’m going to be a bit honest here man (or girl haha); the prospects are looking a bit grim. I was in a similar situation for you last year when I applied to HKU, CUHK, and HKUST. My portfolio looked something like this (at the time of application):
SAT I: 1960
SAT II Biology (E): 680
SAT II Maths Level II: 690

AP Biology: 3
AP Calculus BC: 4 (sub-score 3)
AP World History: 5

Cumulative GPA: 3.86

I applied for Pharmacy at HKU and CUHK as my first choice. I was rejected for both apps; it is super competitive. Law is probably even more competitive than Pharmacy (though the argument can be made for Pharmacy given the low number of spaces available for Pharmacy compared to Law).

Given that HK universities tend to reserve most of their spaces for local JUPAS students, the number of seats available for non-JUPAS students are hotly contested among students from other streams. To be competitive, a SAT score over 2000 is the minimum. The reason that HKU and other HK unis place a heavy emphasis on the SAT is because of the the standardized nature of the test (which makes it easy for the uni to compare students who come from high schools of a different GPA system etc.).

With an SAT score in the band of the 1900s, I’d advise that you also apply to schools in the US or other universities in HK to be safe. If you have any questions, feel free to inbox me :)
