@ugatsghk - How are your co-curriculars? any particular extra curricular area that you are strong in? I, in all probability, will at most get a rank of 6000-7000 in JEE Advanced. So I am targeting first five NITs.
Which city do you live in?

Not really, I am an average candidate. I gave up on engineering to pursue my passion for economics with some effort, primarily because in society’s eyes IIT is akin to utopia.

NIT Surathkal seems to be easy to get into, at least for people aiming mainly for the board like me. But, IIT is very different.

I’ll tell you where I live, but just not on this public forum, add me as a friend on CC?

NIT Surathkal is achievable ,however, it isn’t that easy. Getting a rank of 2500 requires some work [around 250-260 in JEE mains and atleast 94% in boards, this was how it was last year]. Although with the 40% weightage to boards, getting around 95-96% always helps.

Although there is a catch. While getting 95% might be helpful, a 180ish or 190ish score in mains will definitely not help. You may get NIT Jaipur, but definitely not MNNIT or NIT Surathkal. A lot depends upon how your JEE mains go!

Set yourself to a few IIT’s, IIIT’s and NIT’s and don’t settle for any less. Take a gap year if you have to, but don’t accept anything lower then these. As it is many of the best firms don’t hire engineers who aren’t from IIT.
Mains is very achievable and not like Advanced where everyone has to have had practice of the hardest problems in each topic apart from facing the best people of Mains. Trust me on that.

There is one part that I’d like to disagree about. It isn’t that the best firms look only at IITs [except for the IT/CS sector, which I am least interested about]. A lot of good firms do hire people from BITS and the top four NITs. The packages they receive are very much comparable to what IITians get.
Mains is achievable, agreed. However I feel it does depend upon how you perform on that given day, so you cannot call it easy! It all sums up to that. I have been preparing for JEE for the past two years and I know exactly what happens in the examination hall.

Well, I was talking about firms like McKinsey in finance which recruit Indians after an MBA. They eliminate all engineers who are not from IIT. No BITS, no NIT.
But, I agree that BITS and top NIT’s are somewhat close to IIT in India. Although, they don’t hold the prestige that IIT holds around the globe.

Let us stop talking about India and stay on HKUST! :D

BTW, has anyone of you heard from from HKU? Except for an email confirming the submission of my application I haven’t got anything else. Atleast I got an indication from HKUST that my application was being reviewed/processed, but nothing at all from HKU. What about you guys?

I haven’t got emails for interviews…yet. However not getting invited for interviews does not mean that you are not selected!
I too have applied in the early round in both the universities. I have my engineering as my first preference, business as the second.
Wbu? did you hear from them for interviews?

to Akshathk
I haven’t been interviewed yet, and I do not know anyone who has been called for an interview so far. But you are right, not getting an interview doesn’t mean its a bad thing. So best of luck to you!

I’m applying for a scholarship to the HKU. As an Vietnamese student, I’m not required to submit the SAT score. But I got a 1890 in SAT 1. I dont’t know if I should include it in my application. Will submitting this make me appear to be incompetent cause it’s sooo low compared with other applicants? Please give me some advice
