HKU or HKUST

IISC anyday… v respected college in India

Yes so I’ve heard, but I’m also interested in things like sports facilities ( football ), venturing out and enjoying, and also travelling. The thing is that I got into IISc with a scholarship that will not only cover my entire tuition fees, but also the Government of India will pay me a certain amount of money every month for my own expenses…so this does sound pretty cool.

I’m not exactly a hard-working student, so I was wondering whether the academic rigor is any better In HKU or HKUST than it is in IISc.

And just out of curiosity, I’d like to know which one is better for biological sciences, HKU or HKUST?

Just got an offer from the HKU, School of Science, my major will be physics. Do you think that HKU is a good place to study physics when thinking about a research career? Worth leaving the family and spending money?

@Makaveli94

Which country are you in? And what are your other choices apart from HK?

I have been researching about this in the past few days. And what I heard, from a local point of view, is CUHK is by far the best place in hk for physics. And despite all the fame HKU has, HKU just has a bad science program. Most local students view HKU’s science as a back up for when they are failed to get in the more competitive programs. And so the academic atmosphere in HKU science is just bad, although it may not impact you as much as you are an international student.

Moreover, if your ultimate goal is academia, Hong Kong in general is just a bad place to start your study in, unless you are 2000% sure where you will go after your undergrad years.

Not trying to discourage anyone, I myself am suffering from decising whether to go to Hong Kong for science (and yeah, physics) too.

I have no other choices. I am already a student, second year, of comouter science in my country. I could also start a second major in physics from the next year on, but university, although pretty good for national standards, is rather not internationally recognized. I am afraid that it will diminish my chances for getting into a decent grad school abroad. Few weeks ago I rejected an offer from the hkust because I was afraid of the gpa condition for the scholarship. The hku offer is similiar but this is my last chance so I am considering it.

so for a BSc in Biological sciences, is HKU or HKUST better??

According to qs rankings, hku is better.

Can anyone comment on the international students accommodation in student halls at the HKU?
I have seen one post that many of them are kicked out after the first year (accommodation is guaranteed for internationals only for the first year according to the website).

I have a few friends there in their third year and they haven’t been kicked out. But, then again, they are excellent students, so maybe they have it on a merit basis…

Regarding the opinion that the HKU has a bad science program, I talked to my friend who studies at the HKU, not science though, and he does not have such a feeling. Any other voices?

@Pronut‌ I think what you should me concerned about the most is your admission to elite US universities for your PG studies. Check where the research facilities are better. How did you get that scholarship? Through KVPY?

@univa9 I hear that the admission route to those US universities for PG is easier with an undergraduate degree from IIISc rather than one from HKU or HKUST. Yes, I got the scholarship through KVPY

I applied in late round for HKUST. Is there any possibility for me to get admission in engineering? BTW, they asked me about my predicted class 12 result.

@BMWM550D I think you should be fine with good board percentage. I applied late to HKU and they said (In the interview) I’m even eligible for scholarships.

@Univa9 I am expecting around 90% in CBSE and have 9.8 CGPA in 10th. My ECs and achievements are good and I have scored 9 in SAT essay. What are my chances of getting accepted?

@BMWM550D Did you submit your Predicted score your school prepared? what is your predicted aggregate? Have you heard back from hkust regarding your acceptance?

@maddy09 Yes, I have already submitted my predicted aggregate (91% or 92% around). No, I haven’t heard anything except ‘predicted aggregate request’ from HKUST. It’s making me terribly impatient.

Have you submitted your SAT or SAT subject test scores as well ?
Have u Applied to HKU ?
