HKU or HKUST

Wow,nice…Tennis is my game…tho I also love football,cricket and badminton…

Everybody- Sorry guys for not visiting this thread, but i have my exams going on …so its quiet hard for me.

Sarthak -WoW gr8 yar…all in one…!!

I hv joined the group…!!:)

touch

@muntasir - HKUST is probably a LOT more generous with scholarships for int’ls than any other university I’ve researched. (;

smartchap: thats cool… I used to play Tennis when I was small, but I was pretty pathetic at it, havent tried it since! lol…

aman: Its cool man, dont worry! We are future HKUST students now, and because that is settled even if we dont visit this thread we will meet in HKUST  and then again, there is the facebook group to ensure we all will stay in touch!

phoenix_ice: haha… well I cant say for sure, but there def has to be something more to the nerd stereotype!
I can totally understand! I had this elbow injury when I was 12 and I couldnt play for like almost a year! that was probably the worst time of my life!!
Track and Field are definitely sporting events! and as a matter of fact I have heard HKUST has decent track and field events! but anyways, I was the house captain for my middle school athletics team, but only for a month, after which I gave up the post cause there were a lot of things I was doing and athletics was not my strongest… I basically do 1500m, 800m, and cross-country, and relays … I’m supposed to be good at shot put, but then again, anyone can be good at shot put, lol… However, hurdles and high jump are probably the only areas in my life that I am exceedingly horrible at ! But I am determined to change that this year for sure!!
I play basketball in the division 2 team, as I started playing last year, and wasn’t good enough to make the D1 team… Absolutely LOVE the sport !

Muntasir: HKUST is def “The” best, without any doubts whatsoever, when it comes to Scholarships !

oh man! haha, I did 300m hurdles for my senior year and went to section finals (never went to state), 400 and 1600relay–cross country I was okay at. I used to do long/triple jump before I got surgery the first time I tore my ACL (can you say reoccurring injury?). Ah, but to reminisce on old days hurts. I need to get surgery and get back to my junior year condition before I feel I can be proud of my high school ECs. :(

Basketball is a favorite of mine! I’ve actually never played cricket, badminton, or rugby as they pale in popularity here to American Football and basketball. Volleyball? You can’t live in southern california by the beaches without loving it!

And oddly enough, another favorite of mine is Ultimate Frisbee. =) 'course, these are all played casually. Couldn’t say I’d be very good since I’m always minding my knees.

Random question, do they have a beach volleyball court at HKUST? I live no where near a beach in Canada and would love to play that in the sun whenever I have spare time :)

Hi. I’m from Korea. I applied for HKU and CUHK in middle of January, and i have a question when the results are released. I just received the e-mail from HKU that informs my main contact person. Is there anyone who get offers from either universities?(except early decesion)… Please share the information…Thanks! :)

ah! I applied the course of Quantitative Finance in both univ.

@Anand78
CUHK’s official language is chinese, so it’s more like a typical chinese university. i mean, there are many things that arent written in english. OOHH some students couldnt talk to me in english… I didn’t like the campus very much, but my parents did :-0

UST is on the mountain… very high. The campus is fascinating- library, gym, mcdonalds and all that stuff. can see beautiful “ClearWaterBay” from domitory building i guess… there is a bus stop at the univ but I dont think non goes to downtown(tism sha tsui) i think it’s the right place to be isolated… no offence! hmm, l personally prefer UST than CUHK but my parents said that UST doesn’t look like a university. haha.

HKU is more lively and active, as I mentioned. Campus is small and it’s in the middle of the road. duh. I could see many society posters and job recruitment posters. During lunch, a forum about city development something was going on…

I had lunch at CUHK and HKU cafeteria  both cheap and yummmmmy!!!

In short, i guess

campus size: CUHK > HKUST > HKU
intl students: HKU >>> HKUST> CUHK
food (:)): CUHK> HKU
location: HKU > HKUST> CUHK

to be really honest, i was quite disappointed with all three univ… there are just a few intl students at schools, and I heard that most of them are exchange students. also, HK was way too small and narrow to me :frowning: too high buildings with too many people… well I understand that it’s not famous for the space. but it’s a definitely coool city to have fun!!!

i can speak mandarin- it was easier for me to communicate with old people, shop assistants and bus/taxi drivers in mandarin than english. some was not able to speak english while some spoke english that i couldnt understand… but generally, there was no problem when asking/talking.

@Muntasir
thx  well, my predicted grades were AAA, but I remember that I wasn’t required to submit my predicted grades to HKU.

Anyways, my conditional offers are… *no scholarship, phew-

HKU - ABB without interview
HKUST - AAB with interview
CUHK - AAA without interview

Hope this helps :-)

@Jeung: I don’t know about HKU, but for HKUST… I applied in November and heard back at the end of February but a lot of people heard back a lot sooner.

@Wly: Which uni do you think you’ll go to?

@wly300-thanks a lot man…Highly appreciated…I have heard from many people that HKU is right in the centre of the city and is more international…You just second that opinion.
I would love to know what you finally decide…My plan is to go to HKUST but if i do get an offer from HKU,it would make me really confused and i would think my decision over…Do let me know…Cheers…:)

@Jeung-i got the same email too…from what i know from people studying there is that they usually release offers only from April unless you applied really early or you sent an email asking for decision soon due to special circumstances…Good luck,:)

wly300: Thanks for your information on HKU!

phoenix_ice: I can understand how painful that might have been! I mean not the surgery but actually not being able to participate! And from how much you said you did, it must have been a big loss!! Hope you recover soon!

rebecca: I have heard there is, but not sure…

I sent my declining letter to CUHK and UST yesterday… which means that i’ll be in HKU in this comming september (only if I get good grades though).

I heard that UST’s fame is a bit inflated by its EMBA programme, and its education is research-wise, which has led it to be ranked high. someone described UST as University of Stress and Tense, haha. i guess there is nothing to do around the campus because it’s on the mountain, so people just concentrate on study… I don’t want that happen to me for next three years… so I’m going to go to HKU. But I know somebody who even took a gap year because she wasn’t accepted into UST Biz programme, although she got an offer from HKU.

there is no bad decision between UST and HKU, you know. but it’s up to you to make the best and right choice//

good luck!!

wly300: Congrats on deciding to go to HKU! your comments are valued and thanks for them!
As they say the world is a small place, and as you said Hong Kong really is a small place, we might meet in Hong Kong! And since we are referring to what people say and have said, I said few threads ago, Its always beneficial to know people from different programs in the same University, and also from different University in the same place!! So if you would like to, do join our Facebook group!

Cheers!

haha… thank u for replies…
I will apply for HKUST soon, mathematics and economics…or quantitative finance…
Which one is more competitive…?
I think many international students are focusing on finance…
so it’s better to apply mathematics and econimics?

Apply to mathematics so I’ll “know” another international student! :P

rebecca1234: Are u a HKUST student ??
