Haha. All The Best Buddy~
Nah don’t apologise, no rudeness at all. It’s all good. (Bagus Bagus) [I know a bit of bahasa XD] ^^;
I am from the world’s largest democracy. XD Did the IB from an International School in the most densely populated country of the world.

thankss… yea that sounds good ur bahasa… can teach u more if u want too if we get into hku together… so i guess ur an American and did ur IB in monaco?? hahaha… i searched google and that was what it said… hahaha… but i am guessing china, india or singapore?? its obvious i am really bad with my geography… :C

Oh. Don’t worry about it. Mmhm. India and Singapore. India being the largest democracy in the world. Studied in Singapore. I know quite a few of the ASEAN Scholars, that’s where I picked up a few things. Haha. Sure sure~

alrights… icicic… sorry about the big mistake… hahahaha… i was very far from the correct answer… feels very dumb at the moment

Chill~ It’s all good. ^^

Nice to see a lot of new people on this thread…
join our FB group- “Future HKUST International Students”…
Prospective HKU students are also welcome to join…
We can change the name by demand and most of us will share the same concerns anyway.:).

Hi, this is my first post on this thread. I was accepted by HKU and CUHK, and are having a hard time making a choice… It would be great if anyone gives me some insights!
Below is my offers:

HKU
Full-tuition scholarship
Major in Eco&Fin
1-year housing guaranteed

CUHK
Full-tuition scholarship
Major in Economics
4-year housing guaranteed

A lot of people think that I should choose HKU over CUHK due to the prestige… but imo CUHK is equally prestigious “in HK”. But what if I don’t wanna stay there after 4 years?? Is CUHK widely recognized outside of HK, especially UK and US grad schools? Also, is it easy to find an apartment near HKU with a “reasonable price” (like 2000- HKD)? Last, how’s international students’ social life in two schools? Do int’l students get along with the locals?

Thanks in advance!

I forgot to say that I already sent in the deposit to CUHK. Is it possible that I end up deciding not to enroll and send a deposit to HKU?

@lin4621-From what i know CUHK is a top class university but is very chinese oriented. The teaching style ,academic pattern etc…I depends on what exactly you are looking for
HKU is a global university which is arguably the very best in Hong Kong, you cant go wrong with it…HKU will be more intl than CUHK…If you sent the deposit, its unlikely they will return it but they always make exceptions …you must contact them if need arises…I am sure that you will get housing in HKU for further years…Its just that they dont guarantee it…you will probably make frnds and decide to live out of campus anyway…
Hope this helps…cheers!!:)

@Anand78 – thanks for your reply. I don’t think I’ll ask CUHK to return the deposit… It’s just I’ve signed a contract which is sent along with the deposit. If I decide not to go, is it “legal”? And do you know how much people pay for living off campus?

By the way, does HKU have core education? Are Mandarin classes and/or Cantonese classes required for international students?

lin4621: Hey~ Well actually to be honest I don’t know much about CUHK. From what I hear HKU has the maximum number of international students among the three unis. I didn’t actually apply to CUHK either. So can’t say much about it. Oh and the deposit thing, I’m not sure if CUHK will refund the deposit, I think the deposit is to confirm your place at the university so yeah. “Legal” haha What did you sign? I mean it can’t be like “I hereby swear not to go to another university and realise that I am duty-bound to CUHK” I think can change. How much is HKU’s deposit? If you can pay that then I don’t forsee any reason why you can’t change. Although you might wanna inform the CUHK people after your admission is confirmed at HKU, i mean, at least that one seat will be allotted to someone else and not wasted. (:
Whatever you decide all the best~ I guess this wasn’t much of a help, but oh well. ^^

joshtn: Update from HKU - “Our Admissions Committee has carefully reviewed your application. We are pleased to inform you that you will be given a direct offer to the BEcon&Fin programme, which will commence in September 2010.” There’s no update on scholarship yet. She said someone else will email me about that. So yeah. Just keeping you in the picture~

hey alexavier, thats great news!! Congratulations!! I wonder when that day would come for me that i get that email too!! hahahaha… once again, a million congratulations!! :D

@lin4621-I am not certain how it works but if you inform them that you dont want to come, they will do necessary steps, you are obviously allowed to change your mind but i dont think you will get the money refunded …Living off campus can cost you more/less/equal to living on campus.it all depends on your lifestyle…
I dont think HKU has core education ie mandarin classes being part of the course but i do know that they have a language center where you can pick up languages you want to learn.
End of the day ,it comes down to what exactly you are looking for. Both unis are top class…CUHK is regarded highly by locals but is underrated worldwide because of its chinese oriented curriculum…where are you from???

Guys,i got an interview from HKU on the 22nd…haha…

Joshtn: Meh. I can’t go without a scholarship y’know. So I think I’m really banking on that. And don’t worry I’m sure yours is on the way. (:

Anand78: Oh! Haha! Congrats. (: So HKU or HKUST? Haha.

Anand78 : Congrats!! Can i ask some questions??.. When did u apply for HKU and what major?? Did u apply on ealry decision??? , i am waition for HKU reply… (: Thank u!

@alexavier-as i applied for engineering ,it makes sense to choose HKUST…But Hoping to get an HKU offer anyway…:0

@jeung-Thanks, any tips for interview??i applied really late ,like jan 31st or something…I applied for engineering…
Good luck with your application,I am sure you will hear soon.
