Hey evrybody! I’m back! Sarthak, Anand, SF…how are you guys doing?
So whos going to HKUST now? Please update me…cant bother reading all those posts I missed…

@Aluva-nearly all of us on this thread are applying for undergrad,i suggest you go back a few pages and look for “SAM LEE” …Send him a PM or something…He can guide you…
All i can say is that HKUST is top class ,thats why it features in the top 30 universities for engineering…It is very Research oriented though which i personally think is a good thing…some people think otherwise.

@lordxxx–how is it going mate??lot of new people on this thread… i suggest you join our fb group-“Future HKUST International Students”

hey all,
just a quick question- how long did you guys have to wait for their decision after you guys applied?

@ lin4621- Congrats dude. Btw wen did u apply at HKU?

Hello ppl, I applied at HKU during the late Jan for Econ nd Finance as my major. They just sent me an email today, which is a “Greetings from The University of Hong Kong (HKU)”. Can any1 pls xplain me, what might be the status of m application in this moment after receiving the email.

Rhank You

@Anand78: I’m from Taiwan. It’s great to know that Mandarin language courses are not mandatory in HKU, I’ve had them enough for 18 years…

@Muntasir: I applied in the early December. I guess HKU have a little bit different admission policy for Taiwanese students (we’re defined as between international and mainland students), so my experience may not help you
You received that email because the school has got your application. HKU uses rolling system, and if you’re admitted, the Econ&Fin department will tell you that in an email, and then the admission office will email you a more formal letter which tells you what to do next. Wish you the best of luck!

LordXXX: Welcome Back! Well basically we have established that HKUST is pretty much the best University in the World Lots of people on here got accepted are probably going to go as well, so to get everyone together and know eachother better we have made a facebook group, so join that !

Muntasir: I’m not sure what that means mate! Sorry…
Maybe someone who has applied to HKU might be able to help…

Hi all, this is my first post
i got an offer from CUHK and HKUST for the BBA program. i dont know which one to pick! advice please? personally, i find the ust program more attractive, but the conditional requirements are lower. my head is hurting from thinking about this. i have to pay the deposit very soon.

The general feeling on this board is hkust>cuhk. But it depends what sort of education you want/plans for after your ug. Pick whichever you have a better feeling about :)

Carinne: HKUST is definitely the better one out of those two! Besides BBA at HKUST is definitely better… but thats what I and my friends say, and even most of the people on this thread… The best answer is whatever you believe in… just think about the importance of campus, people on campus (internationals/locals), global reputation (HKUST>CUHK), future job placement, and most importantly the type of education you want! CUHK will be the chinese style and HKUST the American style…
This goes for everyone, the EASIEST possible distinction between all the Hong Kong Universities is their style of education
HKUST = American style
HKU = British style
CUHK = Chinese style
Hk Polytechnic U = Hong Kong style (very traditional/local) with an element of Chinese (mainland) education

Oh and Good Luck making a decision! Hope its HKUST (no pressure)! In any case join our Facebook group, the name of which is “Future HKUST INternational Students”…
To be honest you cant go wrong with both of those Universities, but there is definitely a better one out of the two… :)

@Carinne:

I don’t know much about UST but I can tell what I know about CUHK. I’ll try my best to be objective. Hope this does help you.

There’s something about CUHK that I find attractive:

1) campus: CUHK’s campus is the largest among the three unis. HK is a small place you’ll find the space is really limited. I find it quite suffocating to be in the city – skyscrapers everywhere and sometimes I cannot even see the sky. However, CUHK is like another world – spacious, scenic, etc. CUHK is kinda isolated, which makes students more closely bounded and forces students to focus on studying during weekdays. (There’s a lot of distractions in HK, e.g, shopping malls, bars…) Many students go to town on weekends, and there’s a subway station right next to the school. The dorm rooms are spacious as well.

2) the college systems: all students and professors are divided into four colleges in CUHK. Each college has its own spirit and tradition. There’s tons of parties and festivals held in the colleges. Students of the same college live together, which help them to make friends.

3) CUHK is really caring to its students: HKU and UST do not guarantee housing service for internationl students after their 1st or 2nd year of study. But CUHK guarantee 4 years of housing to international students. I think this shows how much the school is dedicated to taking care of its students. One thing unique about CUHK is it holds both University’s orientations and departments’ orientations for incoming freshmen. According to my CUHK friend, she was afraid of being alone when she went to CUHK (there’s only one or two taiwanese going to CUHK each year), but she ended up meeting tons of people in the first two weeks. Also, CUHK is on a mountain, and there are buses taking students everywhere.

If you look on the prestige, UST is better. But to me, college experience is more important than prestige.

Btw, if you can read chinese, you may want to take a look at this website:
?????????

It’s a forum for chinese students studying in HK. There’re some imformation I found useful.

^when I said “prestige”, I meant international prestige. When it comes to local prestige, CUHK might be better and the alumni network is stronger due to its longer history.

Sarthak/Anand: Hey, Im still not sure about HKUST though…still thinking. Anyways, I’ll join the FB group…will be great to see what kind of people go there lol
Did you guys know that HKUST is also known as the HK University of Stress and Tension? lol

Btw, any of you guys watch cricket?

@Lordxxx-i heard that…that make me nervous too…
I am a massive cricket fan and a club level player too…
Plz do join the FB group

LordXXX: Well thts an easy answer, only “awesome” people go to HKUST! Well if HKUST is known as Hk Uni of Stress and Tension, I guess what Stanford, Cornell, and all the Ivy leagues are called ! lol… If you wanna be called a graduate from the 22nd best Uni in the World for Engineering then you gotta expect some homework atleast It is true I was earlier considering Uni of Nevada in Las Vegas but then tht wouldnt have looked so good on my CV… haha
I am a VERY BIG cricket fan!! I open the bowling attack, havent played it for very long though cause of not being in India and doing IB !

22nd??? what rankings??
I thought it was 26th…
i hope its 22nd when the rankings come out this year…:)

Its 22nd in USnews rankings for Mechanical Engineering if I remember correctly… but it definitely is the best University for Mechanical Engineering in Hk acc to the USnews rankings, which is what i consider to be reliable rankings…
Its even No.9 or 10 for Business now as you might have heard! One of the best in Asia!

Sarthank19118 Do you happen to know how the CUHK’s Hotel & Tourism Management is??

kyubaek90: I have heard it is decent, however, Hk Polytechnic Uni visited our school and their Hotel and Tourism Management looked really good! They have a 5-star hotel where you can work as an intern so you get the hands on education experience with work-ex, more like a co-op but you are hired by the University pretty much… HKUST is probably the best Uni to do your MBA from in Hk as of now, it being No10 in Asia Pacific…
But sorry all of this doesnt answer your Q! I’m not too sure about CUHK’s Hotel & Tourism Management… maybe “lin4621” would know more about it, since he is very religiously defending CUHK
“lin4621” care to help kyubaek90 mate ?
