HKU or HKUST

Sam Lee: That’s what the prof at CUHK told me when I asked. He said although there are many classes taught in Chinese, int’ls will be able to get through with their credits with the sufficient amount of courses that are conducted in English. (Despite the comparatively small amount of int’l students at CUHK…)

You are the one that asked me about Hotel Management, right?
[CUHK :: AQS :: Undergraduate Student Handbook :: Home Page :: Faculty of Business Administration :: Hotel and Tourism Management :: Students Admitted in 2009-10 :: Course List and Description](Error) shows you the language of instruction for all the courses in that department.

It looks like they are mostly in English only. For courses that have sections with “Chinese & English”, there are always the English only sections for you to choose instead. At least that’s what this webpage says.

Sam Lee: Yeah that was me. Thanks for the info. Are you a student at a HK uni or a HK local?? You are of really big help. Thx.

i am a HK expat in the US. ;)

Sam Lee: Nice. It’s good to hear from a local’s point of view. It’s definitely the most accurate.

HK is indeed a lot cheaper than unis in the U.S. or Europe. Almost double the amount or sometimes even worse!!

I am going to bust Sarthak19118 about Kettering cos he made the offer sound more tasty than it’s really is: ;)

Kettering is not well-known here at all; USN decided to give a fair look to the smallish schools without PhD programs and put them in a separate category. But people only know about the research universities when it comes to engineering. Many people know about Rose-Hulman which has Masters programs, I believe. Even with 22,500$ scholarship, you still end up paying more for it than HKUST. Oh, it’s in Flint, Michigan…yikes!

US unis are expensive even for people who live in the US… and to think the University of California system is increasing their fees even more for next year! I have a question for all those econ people out there, though… how is it that California makes federal aid seem like money is just handed out… isn’t California the most in-debt state in America???

Oh you edited… My reply supposed to go under Sam Lee’s. In case anyone gets confused.

phoenix,

i am not sure if NY is better than CA. CA is most in-debt in terms of size but I am not sure if it got the lower debt:asset ratio. it’s like America having the most national debt but it’s debt/asset ratio is better than places like UK and certainly much better than Greece…

Also, CA may have a stronger tax base. The state/local govts over-promise so many things and live beyond their means. Look at the pension plans for employees. People want loads of benefit but don’t want to pay. The self-entitlement of people is pretty unbelieveable.

In contrast, last I read, HK govt was running at a surplus and citizens were gonna get cash from the govt, despite the alreaady low tax. It’s not a stimulus money financed by debt. Granted, HK operates like a city-state so some comparison may not be valid. But they do have a cleaner (less corrupted) and more efficient govt for sure and employees have better work ethics based on what I’ve seen.

By the way, economists have no political power even if they know the solution. You have to consider the politics…

Thanks Sam! Haha, yeah, Americans are spoiled with a sense of entitlement… and that’s probably since conception of social security following the great depression. You’re right about politics. I may one day be hunted down for saying this, but I am losing faith in my home country’s political and economical prowess. China has bought out a lot of our debt and holds most of it already. Ergo… I’m guessing, HK economy = more reliable in the future. :O… So actually, HKUST is the best choice I could make in these trying times??? hah!

btw, thanks also for everybody’s input on CUHK.

^ Well, if you are ever hunted you might as well seek political asylum in Hong Kong lol xD
I’m glad people have a good insight of the future =D

@Sarthak/Anand: Rankings vary a lot and also depend mostly on research and stuff which we are probably not gonna do…so I think rankings dont matter that much. Anyways, its good to know HKUST has a high ranking…you can show it off and stuff :P

And great to see cricket fans goin to hkust, being one myself…though i pretty much suck at playing :frowning: …You guys watching the ipl?

Btw, do you know anything about job opportunities in hk?

phoenix_ice,

if i remember what i read correctly, there will be more people feeding on social security than people contributing to it starting in 2018. as for city/state; more people are feeding on the retirement plans than people funding it (i don’t know when that will happen of if it’s already happening). what does that mean? there are more vampires than blood givers… by the time we get old, what we got is not social security but “social debt securities”!

Sam Lee: Kettering has Masters too, and if you go by the stats 98% students graduate with a offer from the top notch post grad schools or job offers… Look into the co-op that Kettering has, its not available “anywhere” else in US or pretty much any other country, thats probably the only thing that pushes Kettering to such a good rank in the Uni rankings, however, the academics are extremely good with a very low student:teacher ratio! and going to your point about putting them in a separate group in rankings, well its not fair to compare schools with huge no. of majors and PHD degrees to schools focused only on specific programs! Oh and the crash test centre at Kettering, is quite cool… I know 3 people working for GM in Shanghai, all very high-up, who are all from Kettering! My father’s cousin in US who is also quite high-up in GM said graduates from Kettering are ready to be hired as soon as they graduate due to the work experience they get while doing the co-op at Uni ! there are advantages of small schools, like you are known by names not numbers, professors pay more attention to you and help you better… you are involved in projects with the professors that are really BIG! sooo I think Kettering is not such a bad school after all… Rose-Hulman is great too, but I still believe its not as great as Kettering… Oh and I have an offer from Rose-Hulman too, but no scholarship… and def Terre Haute is way better than Flint!
You are right about Flint, Michigan! “yikes!!” haha… However, I will be paying way lesser than I would at ANY other US University, unless I make it to Cooper Union which I’m waiting to hear back from after being deferred the first time… Hk def is the cheapest it could get even with scholarships for US Universities, which is also why I admire HKUST for offering such quality programs with a low fee!!
Appreciate the “busting” me effort, but me sounding happy about scholarship is more of excitement rather than exaggeration for All of us applying to Uni, so we sound as if even getting an e-mail from a Uni is amazing! I’m sure you understand cause you would have been through the same  and then again 22,500 is quite a big amount considering the Unis are not very keen on giving out scholarships this year and that I am one of thousands applying to Kettering…

LordXXX: As I said before, rankings are not important, but they are some indication of roughly how good or bad (comparatively) a University is… As the rankings are very subjective I did my own rankings for the Universities I applied to, and you;ll be happy to know HKUST tops the charts with NUS on 2nd position!! haha… buts thats because in my rankings I had columns like campus beauty, flight costs, distance from home(shanghai currently), more insight into Chinese culture and Mandarin, weather et cetera… Oh and school fees and duration of program/course!!! I highly recommend Everyone to do their own personal rankings using the method I described to “Kyubaek69”

I meant Kyubaek90… :)

Hong Kong wins for me just on the basis of beautiful weather. :)

Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiii… I got an admission offer from HKUST just last night n im pretty excited about it;) Any undergrads here from hkust?? how’s the experience? hoping to hear soon
