Samtjt : I also have a phone interview for HKUST on the 22nd of March. My major’s Global business though… I hear they ask some really unexpected questions regarding your major. Some have been asked questions based on current events, some have been asked the “Why do you want to study in HK?” question. But hearing from the applicants overall, it’s mostly like a conversation and not a formal interview. Plus, considering that most interviews actually lasted for over 10 -15 minutes…

hi ppl…so u all planned to go to HKUST…??

Hey people, I’m just curious… could we do some sort of poll/stats of the country you guys come from?
I wish this forum had a poll feature, hm… does it?

jiceo1: It seems that most of us are asian students… BTW I am a Korean. And about the poll, you could get the polling system off of a different site and embed the tags on this forum.

@samtjt - helloooo fellow Chem Eng student! Handy advice that’s been handed about from all of us here: they ask you about everything you listed in your application and then some. So keep a copy of your application on hand. They will ask why do you want to study in Hong Kong and things like that. The interviewer seems pretty nice for the CBME department so I think it should be pretty laidback for you. Just prepare, don’t stutter, and keep your cool. It will come naturally. I spent most of my interview asking my interviewer questions about the school … hahaha

@smirtia - welcome!! and congrats!!!

@jiceo - There are people so far from India, Pakistan, England, Canada, United States, Korea, Malaysia (? I think)… I couldn’t say much about the proportions though. Heh.

@andrewheat - well said. :)

I’m getting nervous now seeing that a lot of you guys are getting interviews from HKUST. I still haven’t gotten a response from them and I applied around beginning of Feb.

Has anyone else gotten a interview with HKU yet?

I have never done a interview before and I wonder what are they generally about? Do I need to prepare a speech to be presented to them or just answer their questions?

I only applied to HKUST btw.

Just answer their questions. It’ll just be you talking about yourself so no real need to prepare. Breath :D

just keep ur cool dude…n answer ur questions wid confidence… i can tell u dis as i have personaly given many intws…n they r al d same…just have some knowledge on the branch u have aplied for…why that branch??..why hkust…??

does it matter if u submit the app late…as in …is it like first cum first serve basis r somedin…??

arpitjain: HKUST has rolling decision system so yeah its better to apply asap…

any CUHKs?

Yeah there are some… Kyubaek90 is def a CUHK, and there was one more cant remember the name…

collegereally?: I didn’t have an interview with CUHK. The prof of the Hotel & Tourism Management e-mailed me and asked a few questions. Why are you interested in our course? What do you expect from our program? What do you plan to do after graduation? Besides our school, what school in HK, Singapore and other countries do you plan to pursue your interest? Those were the questions and I replied by e-mail. And the prof was really fast with the reply. He said that he felt comfortable nominating me for the application and I got an admission offer about 2 weeks later. If you have any questions regarding the application of CUHK feel free to ask on this thread. I’ll be more than happy to answer your questions (despite the limited info I have with me).

EliteGeek: I applied on the 31st of January since that was the deadline for HKUST and I just heard from HKUST that my telephone interviews were scheduled on the 22nd of March. Considering the ppl I know who applied to HKUST, it seems that the earlier you apply, your interviews will be schedule earlier than others.

And about HKU, aren’t the interviews and the admission offers from HKU start in April?? (Except those who applied early…)

oh wait kyubaek i talked to you on cyworld i think haha about your extension… anyways
i didnt have any kind of interview for CUHK at ALL… what program are you doing again?

collegereally?: Oh you’re the same guy?? What a coincidence… I’m doing the Hotel & Tourism Management programme.

Sarthak19118,

Actually, the admission to KU is not difficult. The average ACT is only 26; the caliber of the student body at HKUST is definitely higher so that’s one of the pros for going to HKUST. I doubt the validity of the claim that grads get offers from top post-grad schools, despite what they might have said. As I understand it, the CO-OP is a graduation requirement and that leaves virtually no room for academic research (I also don’t think faculty there are doing much of that anyway). Grad school admission is pretty big on academic research and it’s also a lot about the GRE score (for a given school, that derives more from the caliber of the entering students). KU is very vocational-oriented and it’s a great place to get your hands dirty and to get a job upon graduation. But I don’t think it stands out in particular when it comes to placement to top grad schools.

Just wondering, where is everyone from?

It doesn’t seem to be much American applying to HKUST.

exe163, are you from America? I think I’m so far the only one on this thread from America :|…

most people from US won’t apply because they’ve already supposedly got top-notch education at their finger tips.
