HKU or HKUST

LordXXX: Singapore has awful weather!!! Hk is MUCH better than Singapore when it comes to weather…
Job prospects, i’m not too sure about, but i’d guess they are higher in Hk and plus Hk opens opportunity to enter the mainland china job market, so thts another thing to look at…

oldnite1: You should hear back from HKUST before Mid April the latest…

Okay, weather in singapore sucks…Then what about the course? I think NUS has a better course structure than HKUST…

Btw, how do you think the china job market compares to that of uk?

@Anand78
i really want my decision now!! haha
for HKU, I applied to bba law, accounting and finance, and info systems.
and for HKUST, i applied to global biz, accounting and finance, and BBA
how about you?

@oldnite-hahaha…maybe you should email them if you have an emergency…
I applied for engineering in both…where you from??

@Lorxxx-since i live in the UK,i d be the best one to answer that…Lol…:)…UK is great ,provided you have the money to go a top university, jobs wont be a problem…I dont know much about the chinese job market but its a communist country at the end of the day. Cant imagine it being immigrant friendly…
NUS has been consistently ranked in the top 15 uni in the world for engineering…
NUS>HKUST…but a degree in HKUST is only for 3 yrs.,so thats a massive advantage.
if you are going for postgrad, both of them will be absolutely fine…
BTW singapore is always hungry for talent and give residency easily …are you waiting for decision from NTU/NUS??/

LordXXX: hahahahaha! China’s job market compared to Uk’s !! You kidding mate! The job market in UK and US are one of the worst right now! They aren’t expectedcome back up for another 4-5 years atleast! And job market in Asia is way better right now… Japan was kind of closed, but now due to reduction in the proportion of youth making the society its opening up, as you would know from the Vast International students program in All major Universities… China faces the same problem, low proportion of the population making the youth so job market is expected to become way better… With India developing more by the day job marlet there is improving too, however there is no problem of youth in India, we have a BIG population :)

Anand: China is a communist country, thats true, but there are more number of Internationals here than probably anywehere else! I was shocked when I first came here,… There are atleast 4000 Indians only in Shanghai !! Job market in Uk is pretty stagnant right now mate! Even teachers from Uk and people working in Uk have told us so…

@sarthak-i had clearly mentioned going to a "top " university…The things seems bad because earlier it was so damn good.:). Its is still better off than most countries in the world…people from good universities are always wanted and get easily get 6 figure salaries
I dont care how many Indians live in Shanghai, there are Indians everywhere…even if you go to estonia and Peru ,you will find hundreds of Indians…

“but there are more number of Internationals here than probably anywehere else”
That is proper BS…Shanghai is not known as a global city…
New york is a global city…London,Madrid, abu dhabi,Hong Kong are global citites
Please dont try and tell me that China is immigrant friendly .lol…
Most of the english people there will be teachers or something, right??

@Anand: Yeah, uk is probably the best place for a good education but its damn expensive in there…living expenses are almost as expensive as the tution fees itself. But I am considering Uni of Edniburgh…since its slightly cheaper than the others. How do you think that compares to Hkust or NUS?
You mean NUS does NOT give residency easily lol…yeah, you have to do some extra **** or else they kick you out.
I applied to both NUS/NTU but waiting for NUS…HKuST is probably way better than NTU…

@Sarthak: Now you telling me to come to India?! I thought this financial crisis was going to end by the end of this year…
I dont think China is that international…4000 Indians in Shanghai? There are Indians all over the world, mate! There are probably more Indians here in the Middle East than the local Arabs!
The thing is China is everywhere…just like Indians, CHinese are all over the world. But unlike Indians, they work really hard. THats why they are so successful…

How about the living standards in HK, singapore and uk?

Anand and LordXXX: Sorry to disagree mate, but Shanghai is not a Global city !!! What ! The ENTIRE Expo recognizes the fact that Shanghai is one of the most global city and not I but all the global cities say that! All Multinational countries love to work here due to the Government giving them special offers etc… And By stating the number of Indians I meant if there are 4000 Indians then you can well imagine how many Internationsl there would be… An easy example there are around “18” International Schools in Shanghai and in China no Chinese kid is allowed to go to an International school so they ONLY have Internation kids and every school has atleast 1500 kids… Now every kid would have 2 parents, if not more, and so double the number of Internationals and LOTS of Internationals dont even have kids soo add them to the total number!!! Thats a lot of diversity mate… But I understand what you mean cause people who havent been to Shanghai think of it as this small village in 1940s, which was true 30 years ago, now its the city with the best night life and a lot more, and again I dont say that the staticians and professionals ranking cities say that…
However, I do agree Indians are EVERYWHERE !! lol … I mean we might be the only nationality represented equally well in literally Every country!! haha…

Living standards in Hk: what can I say, it is the only place with a card that you can use for traveling, shopping and eating… it has amazing infrastructure and Very scenic at the same time ! technology with culture… Singapore is an Awesome place too !!! Uk I’m not sure about, as I haven’t lived there…

@lordxxx-Edinburgh is a good university and well reputed in the UK…i have a couple frnds who go there and they say its pretty awesome…
Uni education is the UK is pretty laid back ,so you will find it pretty easy…
But NUS is in a League of its own and HKUST will follow soon.
For engineering-NUS>HKUST>edinburgh
NTU is also good but very underrated but HKUST is better of the two…
oh i dont know about the extra ****but i do know that Sgpore is always hungry for talent…i am waiting for NTU too

@sarthak-i do know about the development in Shanghai as my dad makes regular business visits there too.Shanghai has gone through enormous changes over the past decade that few cities in history have experienced in such a short period of time. The city has succeeded on many fronts: economic growth, foreign investment, trade, improvement in living standards, infrastructure construction, and environmental improvement, to name just a few.I get all that but that doesnt mean that it is a global city yet…These things take time…but with China opening its door maybe it will be in the future…
a lot more people of different nationalities need to come in for it to constitute as a truly global city like abu dhabi, new york, london etc
But it contradicts traditional communist principles so yh but anyway i guess they will open doors…
This is the general consensus in the western world but since you live in shanghai ,you know more so ill let you have the final say…:)

Anand: Even though I believe Shanghai is a global city, I refuse to fight for it being so! I just realized I have no reason to defend Shanghai’s status as I’m an Indian! haha… So you know what I dont know which city is global or not, but I do know cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore are global ! And you can’t disagree
2 Indians arguing over places that they don’t even belong to (technically)!
Moving on, I do agree edinburgh is a really good Uni, probably not as good as HKUST and NUS even NTU maybe… One of my friends will be going to edinburgh this year! Lots of them are going to Uk for Uni, considering we study in a British school and most of them are Britishers… 2 of them are going to Cambridge and 1 to Oxford !! Thats awesome!

sarthak-yup i agree,i think we have contradicting ideas on what a global city is…I respect your opinion so lets leave that debate to when we actually meet at HKUST.(hopefully)
Oxbridge is really great…i will try for postgrad for sure…I had an interview last year but got rejected…lol

haha… yup we shall have a proper debate on it when we meet!
Yeah I’m going to try for Oxbridge too for postgrad, I did wanna try this time too but didnt have the time…

I had the HKUST interview today. SO DAMN LONG!! I had two professors interview me and it lasted 1hr and 30 minutes…

wow…1 hour 30 minutes…that is looooooooooooooooooooooooong…
hope it went well…:)

The 1st prof said I made it into BBA at HKUST (she was probably a prof from the business department…) and then I got to talk with the Global Business professor. He was really enthusiastic… He seemed more excited and passionate about the interview than I was… But he didn’t say that I made it into Global Business. Although he did leave some positive remarks… And now I have a sore throat…:(

kyubaek90: Wow, thats really Long! But atleast its over now! Good Luck for Global Bizz!! I think they just wanted to analyze the interview together before giving you a place for Global Bizz, so don’t worry, you should get it hopefully !!
As for the sore throat, just crush some ginger and add some honey, and drink it all! it’ll be back to normal !! :)

Anand, Sarthak : Thanks to both of you!! :)

Long interview is a good sign. At least it means they didn’t decide to reject you right there; otherwise, they would be wasting their time talking to you.

Hey guys,
I’ve been a stalker here for a while now. =)
I’m considering applying to HKUST for engineering. But I was wondering, should I bother? I have a 33-ish from IB, but I’m in a lot of extracurriculars (president of ESL tutoring, member of Interact, MUN delegate, etc). Do you think I have a chance of being accepted? Also, does anyone know if they need the supporting documents BY March 31st? If so, I probably won’t bother applying, haha.

But also, my local university has accepted me, and they offer co-op program. The co-op program at this university is amazing and the tuition fee is one of the lowest in Canada (more than 1/5 of HKUST’s tuition!). So that was kind of the reason why I put off applying to HKUST, haha. Yet, HKUST is one of my dream universities too. I want to go there for the cultural experiences, I think I’ll have more fun at HKUST. but the university I’m going to seems so much better in terms of future job prospects. haha. So I’m very conflicted right now… sorry guys. just had to rant…

@starsandsky-go ahead and apply.I think you will get an offer…they like students from North America…
IF you send the supporting documents by the first week then you should be Ok…
good luck.:
