HKU or HKUST

@sarthak: Forget Shanghai…we arent going there are we. But I never knew that chinese were only allowed to go to local schools lol…no wonder they are always ****ed off.
I just want to know about HK…about living standards, if you’ve watched “Push” HK looks pretty bad…UK probably has good living standards but they come at huge costs :frowning:
Anyways, do you know how the accommodation at HKUST is? Do we have to apply now or what?

@Anand: Yeah, Edinburgh is pretty low in the rankings compared to NUS or HKUST…but generally I think going to uni in uk probably gets a better recognition than going to hk or singapore…what do you think?
I did apply to Cambridge this time…even came to uk for the interview…but got rejected finally :frowning: Maybe I’ll try again next time…

@kyubaek90: 1hr 30 mins?! Mine was only 3 or 4 mins lol…hope you get in :P

@Anand: And about NUS…its true that you have to do extra stuff in addition to uni work to keep your accommodation…You have to get a certain number of points by the end of the year. So lazy basterds (like me) will probably get kicked out by the end of the 1st year :P

@starsandsky: Hey. I’m Canadian too. Which university where you accepted at in Canada? Just curious.

@lordxxx-yes and no…Edinburgh is generally good but is not in the league of oxbridge,UCL ,ICL etc…nevertheless, edinburgh is generally well regarded in the UK
The standard of the students will be pretty low compared to NUS and even HKUST…
One of my mates got into edinburgh through clearing last year with grades -ACEc…(Chemical engineering)
Thats not very impressive to be honest…
If you get NUS then thats the best option …followed by HKUST and then edinburgh…this is just my personal opinion,i am sure many others will differ.
yh.hahaha.NUS does have some of kind of rule,i am sure people get adjusted once they are there…lol
BTW what grades did u get?? you probably did cambridge A levels right?? coz you dont study in the UK

I got accepted into HKU!!!:D:D:D:D

Congrats AlecDluz…thats awesome…what are the conditions if any??
incidentally,i had my HKU interview a few days back…
it didnt go too well…I couldnt follow the interviewers strong chinese accent and the connection wasn’t the best to be honest…so lets see…
Congrats again…cheers!!!

Heyy AlecDluz congrats!
what major did you apply for? and when did you apply?

HEY GUYS!!!

I’m a student in Hong Kong, I got an interview in hkust monday morning! Any ideas on what they will be asking??

Alecdluz: Congrats!! Will see you in Hong Kong

@Anand: Yeah, NUS is the best…but I mean going to a uk uni usually gets a better recognition than going to hk or singapore or somewhere like that. Doesnt matter what uni in uk, just saying that “I got my bachelor’s in the UK!” will impress anyone.

But I thought the min grade requirement for edinburgh was 2As or somethin…

Got 4As  I did Edexcel though which is much easier than Cambridge lol

@AlecDluz: Congrats! Did you apply to HKUST?

@Farhanfyzee: Well, it usually depends…like for me it was only about 5 mins. They just asked the normal interview questions like why engineeing? why hk? There were some questions posted earlier in this thread…try looking and good luck :)

@lordxxx-maybe thats the requirement for intls…But my frnd got through clearing which happens in august after the results come out…i am sure you know what clearing is…
different courses have different criteria is guess…I guess you have gone through the times UK rankings…its spot on…But rankings are not the be all and end all of a university…
Gordon Brown studied in edinburgh…lol
As i said, you must choose what seems the best suited for you…
edinburgh is good but not the greatest(for engineering)
i suppose you are now on a gap year, arent you??
otherwise it would have been worth applying to oxbridge again…where do you live??

Hey guys you got facebook???

@Lordxxx thanks!! I hope we all get in!

Many people have got conditional offers from my school… but the word conditional is still…making it ‘unsure’ ohh well! All the best everyone!!

Farhanfyzee: The Interview is just to get a better pic of your personality and reason for opting for the course you are opting for… I can’t guess exactly what Q’s they would ask you, but generally it’ll be Q’s like Why Hk? Why HKUST? What makes you special or diff from the 1000s of other applicants? Why that particular course? Future plans? How will you contribute to the growing success of HKUST? What activities will you participate in and why, and which have you been participating in up till now ?
Most of us are on facebook, I’m obviously by the same name, but if you wanna find the rest then we have a group called “Future HKUST International Students”…
Good Luck!

Hello everyone, Congrats to ppl who got in and best wishes for those whose decisions are pending. Just wanted to knw, how can I confirm tat did HKUST receive my supporting documents. Btw um an international student and i did tryn mailing them at their designated email id for international students (i.e. international.applicants@ust.hk) but it failed… i guess their id is out of order.

Please any1 help me out.

Muntasir : The best way to figure that out would be to do it either by e-mail or phone.

By e-mail, you should contact the advisor that is taking care of your documents. He/She

should have sent you an e-mail with a specific name on the e-mail. Or if you want it

done quickly and directly, using the phone is also a good way to contact them. Call the

admissions office or the person in charge of your documents and he/she will be able to

confirm the arrival of your documents right away.

Sam Lee, LordXXX : Thanks. But what’s worrying me is that they still haven’t sent me

e-mails concerning the interview. I just moved to Tokyo (from Seoul) a couple days ago

so I need to send them that my address has changed… And what worries me the most is

that HKU hasn’t even contacted me still… I sent out my documents in late January (on

30th…). I hope I get a call from HKUST or HKU soon…

Farhanfyzee: In addition to the info that Sarthak gave you, you really need to read up

on your personal statement. They really read that stuff carefully and most of the

questions are based upon that context.

AlecDulz: Congrats!! When did you send in your application and what major did you apply

for??

Hello everybody. I’m interested in HKU’s ‘IBGM’ and HKUST’s ‘Global Business’ Program. Please chance?

Cambridge O-level: 8A, 1B
Cambridge A-level: 3As in A-levels.

Attended an international business conference twice, which involved making up of business plan etc. Lots of community service, and other Extra-curricular activities?

@Vrohra-very good chance but since you applied for GB programs,it would depend on interviews.
I got similar grades and got into the Chem Eng program…
good luck

Ok people. new person on this thread
I sent in my application on march 22nd and my supporting documents should be reaching HKUST shortly.
My options were Mech Eng>Electronic Eng>Dual degree in BEng and BBA.
How is HKUST for mech eng. I read somewhere that its ranked no.1 in the world for mech eng research output. so is it possible to get your name on a research paper by becoming a research assistant?
