HKU or HKUST

Hey guys,
Is the Confidential Academic Reference really very necessary and a dealbreaker if I’m transferring from UCLA?
The person in charge of my admission asked me to mail it because I didn’t.

hey guys
i applied to UST on 20091124 and still havent heard back from them yet… i DID submit the SATs a bit late (late december) but i STILL HAVENT HEARD BACK!

i didnt even get an interview so i emailed them once that i had already been admitted to some schools so they wanted some details and i gave them the details but they just stopped replying… and my application status still says “UNDER CONSIDERATION”

and my friends who applied early-january got accepted already…

any insights?

LordXXX: I actually visited HKUST alone without any guidance from the staff at the

school. I’m not sure about the living standards and all, but it was overall satisfactory. As

I mentioned before, the only bad things about HKUST is the location and the size of the

dorms. I felt that it looked like an int’l school that I used to go to when I was a little kid.

But with more conveniences.

collegereally?: Um… You might want to contact the school about that. I sent my docs

at the end of January and submitted my SAT scores at the mid of February, but I had an

interview with the school on March 22nd. They might have missed out on you by mistake

or some other reason. Do contact them about the application.

I am from Bangladesh but doin my A lvls under Edexcel (UK based). Do i have to do the foundation year?

Hey guys,
what’s the best dorm in hku??

collegereally: it took them just as long to respond to me. I applied in November and didn’t hear till the end of February. I think it’s because I received a scholarship and they wanted to release my scholarship offer at the same time as my school offer. so keep optimistic.

oldnite: I’ve heard Hall VII can’t be beat.

hey guys
so i emailed them politely about the status and i got this

“Unfortunately, due to the number of applicants we have this year, we are unable to consider you for our business programs. However, we are currently assessing your application for the Dual Degree Program in Technology and Management (your second choice), and we will inform you once a decision is due.”

The dumbass i am, i picked BBA, Dual degree in tech and mgmt, and global business in that order…

i guess i have no chance anymore…? :(

Hall VII is newest, Hall VI is the biggest in size. Hall VII has a lot of international/Mainland/exchange students. Will be very boring if you want local immersion.

collegereally?: They are considering if you can be admitted to the dual-degree program.

Unless you don’t want to take the program, there’s a possibility that you might get in.

Hey Guys
I live in Malaysia and I just received an email saying that HKUST is going to phone-interview me…
what kind of questions should i expect?
global biz was my first choice program (second and third were bba accounting and finanace and bba) so do you guys think that they will be asking specific questions regarding the major, global biz?

but isnt the dual degree program so much harder than the regular BBA program…? :(

@collegereally-well maybe so,its not a question of it being harder but the point is that you will have to get an engineering degree too…
If you dont like engineering then it might be hard as the whole course is packed in 4 yrs…

i meant isnt it so much harder to GET IN… i would really love it if i do get accepted as to the dual-degree program but if i didnt get the regular BBA, how will i get the dual-degree…

oldnite: They actually do. At this moment, there’s probably nothing that you can do to

prepare for the interview fully. Since I had an interview a week ago from now (A Damn

long one too), this is my advice: Go over everything you sent to the school. Reviewing

your documents should be top priority.

Anythingelse you do wont help even one bit. (Believe me, I tried preparing for the

interview and it was completely useless…)

@Muntasir: I don’t think so. International A-Levels are generally considered equivalent to UK A-Levels on a grade-for-grade basis.

Some misconception that I’d like to clear here regarding HKU, CUHK, HKUST (in the perspective of a Hongkonger):

 • Science majors: Math and physics is the best and the most rigorous at CUHK. HKU has a slight edge for Biology and Chemistry. Don’t think HKUST gives the best science program. In my peer’s perspective, it is a university of business and engineering.
 • Humanities: HKU rules.
 • Business: HKUST have a slight edge for Global business, etc.
 • Life: HKUST is Hong Kong University of Stress and Tension, you can check its infamous record of suicides. Especially people who study Engineering and Business there, you can’t get much sleep.

@kenhungkk-wow,fascinating stuff…i am debating over Hku/ust …I am favoring HKUST at the moment but your post makes me want to think otherwise…could you share some more light on the universities…
Thanks

I wouldn’t take Kenhungkk’s word about HKUST to be anything more than just a local perspective, especially if he didn’t attend one for more than a semester.
We can’t just judge a university by what other people say (most of them probably are just reiterating what other people said and so on). About the suicide rate, well… it’s an Asian university, what are you expecting in engineering?
I’ve been in engineering over one year. My university is not known to be cut-throat as Berkeley, but you can make it as stressful as you want.

Feel free to trust / not trust me. Just my two cents, and summary of the feedback from my school’s alumni.

Well… One thing worth noting for HKUST Engineering. It is, of course, stressful, but it’s also an excellent course.

@jiceo-I disagree partially,i would value it more for the reason that it is a local perspective…i am not sure if you have heard of the education in HK,its cut throat and nothing like what we have in the Western world…have you heard of HK A levels??
It puts english A levels to shame…
if locals themselves are finding it hard then i dunno…it confuses me…
he is not the only guy,my frnds in HK have mentioned it too…
but lets see…if hard work is your buddy then there will be no problem but if it isnt:)
