It seems like HKUST has a much lover ratio of teaching staff to students than most other countries, and this constantly weighs it down in rankings, like one I see where they got 28/100 points for it.

537 academic staff for 12,600 students. 1:23. It seems like a rather low number compared to most other universities with at least a 1:10 ratio, and universities like Cambridge sporting 1:3.

So, I’m wondering, is this something I should put a lot of weight into? I’m planning on engineering, and everyone seems to say it’s a great school, but are the classes massive? Are student-professor relationships existent?

For UK universities, they are in 3 year curriculum so overall enrolled students will be fewer.

HK universities is transforming to 4 year curriculum from 3 year one in this year, so you see the sharp increase in total no. of students.

HK universities are government funded and the funding is proportional to UGC funded students no. Therefore, I am expecting a drop of faculty to student ratio in early years of transformation until faculty are hired due to increased funding.

However, the ratio is still a bit low to international standard. I think it could be the norm of HK universities, as HKUST/HKU/CUHK (HK big 3 universities) are entitled to similar funding structure.
