How much do connections help?

Hi, I’ve been looking around and couldn’t help but notice a lot of people mention having alumni in the family or attending siblings. I myself don’t have any, but somebody of relation to me has treated staff (as a doctor, oncologist) at a good preporatory school: i.e Exeter, Andover. I would love some insight. Thanks.

Having a parent who attended and has given loads of money since may help (although it depends on the school). Having a friend of the family who once removed a skin lesion from the Head of School, will not.

Based upon this question, and your other thread, I’m getting a sense that you are applying the “throw everything against the wall and see what sticks” approach to admissions, which is just folly. What you need to do is become the best you that you can be. Time can be better spent reading up on the admissions process first. MIT has some great blogs that also apply to boarding schools. A good book is How to Be a High School Superstar by Cal Newport.

What type of staff member is this? Head of admissions? Headmaster? Or one of the cafeteria workers?

How well does your relative know this person? Is it just a one time encounter, or did s/he treat this person for an extended period of time?

How would you know that? Isn’t that a HIPAA violation?

@skieurope
honestly that’s kinda true, I’m of desperate, thanks for the different outlook, I’ll borrow the book.
@austinmshauri
keyword: I.E/in example, idk.
Also, what does being a senior member mean??? Does it mean different settings? Or different rules?/
Thanks for viewing the thread. ?
