AKA no sleep at all, heh. I generally sleep very late on school nights (2am, anybody?) but I seldom do complete all-nighters - probably once every several months or so.
Another question: what do you do to keep you up all night? For me, it’s usually the stamina from the fact that I’m completely doomed if I don’t finish my work by the next day that keeps me up, but today I think I’ll have an energy drink. I drink coffee pretty often, so I’ve gotten used to the caffeine and it doesn’t help me stay up
Hopefully, I don’t crash tomorrow.
I have never done an all-nighter in high school (middle school was a different story, and I didn’t stay up because of large amounts of homework), but I have come pretty close (I stayed up until 5:30 am and woke up at 7). I typically stay up working on homework until 1 or 2 am.
To help me stay up late, I like to get a glass of fruit juice. Usually I’ll get some orange juice, but sometimes I’ll use apple. I also eat a lot of breakfast/snack/health bars (like Special-K and stuff like that).
Sophomore year I pulled like 3-4 all-nighters during the school year (And during the summer after sophomore year I had a really messed up sleep schedule where I’d stay up from 2 pm to 8 am and sleep 8-2.). Sophomore year and last year I regularly went to bed at 1-4 am. This year I haven’t. I feel like I’m an old person, I can’t stay up all night anymore, haha. At any rate, it’s forced me to get my work done ahead of time.
When I would stay up all night, I’d just listen to a lot of fast-paced music. I don’t drink coffee or energy drinks or stuff like that.
I’ve only pulled one actual all-nighter. However, I often only sleep 1-2 hours. I feel like I’m very lucky in that my body seems to be able to tolerate low amounts of sleep very well (I have yet to fall asleep in class or while doing homework at night), so usually staying awake isn’t TOO much of a problem.
Sometimes while I’m staying up, I’ll begin to lose focus though and stare off into space. When that happens, I usually go for a walk, get a spoonful of peanut butter, and slowly eat it. I find the walk is really good for refreshing me and the peanut butter stops me from zoning out again. I’ll also reward myself with breaks like brushing my teeth and taking a shower after I’m done a certain assignment/part.
I’m a sophomore, and I have never pulled an all-nighter before. The latest I stayed up was probably 1 or 2am, and I wake up at 5:30am. I’m not good with little sleep so I make it a priority. And I never leave substantial assignments for the day before it’s due, so I always get at least 4 hours of sleep, and usually 6-7 hours.
Sophomore too, I usually sleep between 12 and 1, sometimes earlier and occasionally later. Latest I’ve stayed up was 3 and it was pretty rough. I actually have stayed up til 6 on a Sunday (not because of homework) but then slept til 11. Eating helps give you energy as well as staying occupied.
I think I’ve pulled about 10 all-nighters this year. Sometimes, if it’s like 8 and I’ve resolved I’m going to pull an all-nighter I will go to bed right then and there for about 30min to an hour
To get through them, it’s usually the high off procrastination plus loud music blasting in my ears. I don’t drink energy drinks or anything like that. The threat of the consequences of not finishing the work is usually enough to power me though
High schoolers pulling all-nighters to study…tsktsk.
I’m a junior at MIT and have yet to pull an all-nighter. I had a few nights this year where I stayed up until ~5am (although one was during Mystery Hunt) but a typical bedtime for me is around 2am.
I pull all-nighters occasionally and I haven’t been in school since 1986! When you work for yourself, you do what you have to do. Sometimes our clients give us ridiculous deadlines and we do our best to meet them, even if that means working weekends and overnight.
I’m a freshman and I do all nighters AT LEAST once a month. I generally sleep extremely late (2am-3am) and I feel as though my body is accustomed to such sleep deprivation. I know, I know, it’s terrible. I know people tend to glorify conducting all nighters as some sort of skill- trust me I absolutely do not feel that way about this practice. It’s weird because I feel worse when I have 5 hours of sleep versus 2. My all nighters are usually due to severe procrastination and poor time management honestly- they’re completely unnecessary. When I sleep 1-3 hours or do an all nighter, I feel perfectly fine at school. But by 6pm I crash and sleep about 14-15 hours.
In fact, I’m doing an all nighter right now (in case you’re wondering why I’m posting at 4am).
I’m a senior, and I’ve never pulled an all nighter. I usually try to get somewhere between 5-8 hours of sleep per night, and I’ll sleep before I do any homework. For example, I’ll go to bed sometime after track so around 5:45-6ish, then wake up somewhere between 12am-2am (don’t set an alarm). I’ll start doing homework and/or read a book until 6am and then get ready for school.
You absolutely reach a point of diminishing returns where being up at 4 am (particularly if you’re posting online instead of studying) will have a negative effect on your grade.
I’ve never had to work past 11:30 for school, and usually not past 10:30. I don’t think I could handle having less than six hours of sleep going into a day.
