Had to jump back in to offer others some hope. Finally got acceptance. Applied 2.5 months ago. School did not send paperwork until mid-Nov. Gibson displayed “complete . . . working to render your decision” for almost 4 grueling weeks. Just this afternoon - not this morning because I checked - the message changed.

Kelsosands13- Congratulations!!! I, too would like to be informed as to what your Gibson login status said prior to your acceptance… Mine says, “Your decision is pending review. We will try to get you a decision soon, but you will receive an update on your admission status by December 15th at the latest.”

Is that what anyone else’s says currently… LET ME KNOW… 4 more days guys… 4 more days… :D

The waiting… Ahhhh!!! My DS’s status still says Application is complete… etc. etc… Fingers, toes and eyes crossed.

Mine said that last week… Don’t worry (ExeterMama)- you’re gonna be fine… If your kid goes to the Exeter I am thinking about, then your child shouldn’t get scared.

Does anyone here have " WE will try to get you a decision soon… but you will receive an update on your admission status by December 15th at the latest"… Is this bad news… I feel like it is???

@justme…woo hoo, congrats!!!

Mine says pending… Does anyone know how long it takes after that message shows up to see your decision?

And because of your post, justme, I logged back in to gibson (as I had given up for the day!), but alas, it still just says the app is “complete”…yada yada.

Thanks, pasadenamom. I am sorry that you (and any others remaining) don’t have news yet.

Well…my daughter was deferred. So upsetting. As I said, she wrote the Why Tulane essay, planned a trip, was in touch with admissions, but I guess her grades/SATs ruled her out. I understand why colleges do this - they need to increase their yield (or the percent of offers that are accepted), but it is a shame that some student are seen as “overqualified” especially in this economic climate. We discouraged her from applying to Ivies since we will not qualify for much financial aid and thought she was making smart choices by applying to selective schools that might value her academic credentials and offer some merit. Seems like that may have been bad advice.
Good luck to the rest of those who are waiting. Hope you get better news.

well, I guess looking on the bright side, I have had lots of opportunities to watch a variety of Tulane YouTube videos! :-)

Sorry Wordy…that’s disappointing, indeed…

Its a deferral, not a denial. Show the love, go visit and things could change.

Wordy, don’t give up. Deferred is not rejected. Now is the time to double down on showing TU that your D is serious about going if accepted. If it’s practical, a visit and meeting with her adcon plus some well written emails may go a long way. Be direct and address their concerns of being a safety school. Your advice was not bad. You’ve hit a speed bump but you’re still on the road. Hang in there.

Wordy–I agree with pushydad and others, it is a deferral, not a denial. Please keep your chin up and think positive thoughts. Alot could change between now and spring. Hang in there! We’re rooting for you.

Still waiting.

I think a rejection will only be more painful at this point. After the five months of anticipation, I would really hope the decision would be positive.

That is not what is happening here, that much I can absolutely assure you. First of all, there are a lot of students that have been accepted with stats that are equal to or even better than your D’s, so that cannot be it. Second, very few people really care about yield as far as PR goes. It is not a factor in the USNWR rankings, but stats are. So to lower the average stat line in order to try and increase yield would actually hurt the school. To the extent they are trying to make the yield not look ridiculously low, they added the Why Tulane question to weed people out based on non-interest. That doesn’t apply to your D either. FYI, my D had 2330 SAT and 3.9 UW GPA with like 9 AP courses. Last year Tulane had any number of students that posted their admission with similar stat levels. Many went on to win the DHS. Trust me, Tulane is NOT weeding out high stat students because they have high stats.

You obviously know I am surprised by this decision, but as we always say on here we cannot see the entire file. How many AP courses did she take? Is there anything at all in her record that would give one pause, such as a suspension or similar event? You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to, I am just saying that there are factors beyond the stats. We always assume there are no red flags if none are mentioned, and give opinions based on that.

So continuing to assume that she took a fair number of AP courses and there should be nothing in her file to raise concerns, I can only think that there is some misunderstanding by the admissions group. If, despite this setback, Tulane continues to be a school she really wants, I would not only get down for a visit as soon as possible, but make sure she meets with her admissions officer. If it were me I would be fairly plain about it, saying that I thought I had made it clear that Tulane was a school I really was interested in and that my record was clearly above the general average for an entering freshman, so I was wondering why the deferment. It is a reasonable question, if my various assumptions are indeed correct.

Wordy, What a bummer! I am not going to attempt to soften it because it just stinks! I hope everything works out. Please keep all of us on CC posted, we really do care. FC gave good advice as usual. I hope you plan to follow it.

What FC said. They absolutely want the top students, but yes, you should show some interest. Otherwise it begins to feel like the old Marx brothers line that you any club that would accept you you wouldnt want to be a member of (well, you know what I mean…)

I’ve griped about the low yield #s for a long time, but it is low precisely because Tulane DOESANT reject people they feel are “overqualified”.

FC- If the application was believed to be EA because all materials were in on time but the app went in as RD rather than EA, when do you think a decision will come? Where was the check box on the Tulane app indicating EA? Does the Jan. 15th deadline date need to pass first? Very disappointing oversight!
