Howard University Early Action Class of 2028

Let’s post our stories here for early action for Howard University! My daughter applied and is waiting to hear back about the admissions and scholarships decisions. Has anyone heard from Howard yet?

Nothing yet and in the past couple weeks the website changed three times! First it was changed to Jan 15, then late Jan, then back to late December… Although I can’t imagine anything coming out next week–I believe most schools are closed. We were REALLY hoping to get word before the New Year…practicing patience

My child got deferred. Since the scholarships were already announced it looks like she’ll be attending another college. She has been accepted at every other school she has applied to.

My D received acceptance this eve & the achievers scholarship. Howard is her 1st choice (w/all other institutions being DISTANT) 2nd, 3rd, etc choices. Does anyone know how firm the scholarship amounts are? This year’s fafsa delay is problematic. I don’t anticipate us receiving anything… but I could be wrong. The scholarship, which I am truly thankful for, leaves us with a gap that’s equivalent to full cost for our state schools (Texas). She’s received really strong offers from several other schools, so I worry there may be some “heartbreak” in our future.

Scholarship criteria is hard to find, but from looking at the 2023 common data set, figured she would fall in their top 5-10%. :worried:

My son was deferred as well.

Deferred. As my student already has several EA acceptances in hand already, she will see the deferral process through (ie submit mid year grades) but very likely will have made a decision by the time the RD decisions are released.

Saw this question on posed and wondered the same- were the only two possible EA outcomes acceptance or deferral? Did anyone get rejected. If they deferred a large number of applicants, it makes for even slimmer odds come RD time….

Hearty congrats to those admitted!

I saw some that were not deferred but not accepted on Tik Tok. I have not a clue what the decision making early action process involved. The acceptance range was all over the place from what I’ve witnessed as far as gpa and standardized test scores. A nice number of current Howard students posted under a few platforms I follow that they were part of the deferred pool as well last year and admitted during regular decision.

HBCU’s will never have the money they WANT to give. The endowment will never equal PWIs. Being in that “middle class bubble” I have been bracing for that reality for awhile… But TONIGHT we CELEBRATE!!! Congrats to your D!

@Alphas91, Howard has 2 competitive full ride scholarships (Karsh STEM Scholars and Humanities & Social Sciences Scholars Program (H3SP)). The scholarships are for a full ride (tuition, room & board, $750 a semester book voucher, and mandatory fees) for students whose households make less than 150K and pays 3/4ths tuition, with room & board, $750 a semester book voucher, and mandatory fees for those households who make above 150K. The applications for both are open until January 30th, 2024.

These scholarships encompass most majors (Karsh is for STEM majors and H3SP has a large list of other majors). My oldest did not initially get a full ride (close to full tuition and she had several full ride offers from other schools on the table), but went through the Karsh STEM Scholars (then called Bison STEM Scholars) process and received a full ride offer in mid-April. Here are the links to both Howard scholarships:

Bless you for sharing. D recvd invite to apply for the hu3/humanities & soc sciences scholarship a couple of weeks ago. With the talent in their applicant pool, I know the competition will be stiff, but will def see the process through til the end.:pray:t5:

I don’t know much about the Humanities & Social Sciences Scholars Program (H3SP) besides they are picking their 2nd cohort of students and that they also spend their summer at Howard and went to Africa (I believe it was Ghana, but not absolutely sure about that) like the Karsh STEM Scholars. I can tell you that Karsh STEM Scholars changed my entire family’s lives (No college debt for my kids, world class research opportunities during the summers and a support system at Howard and a much earlier retirement timeline for my wife). Praying for your kid and family.

Deferred here. It’s process. We accept that. We remain hopeful. Many congrats to the new Bison!
