Howard University Early Action Class of 2028

@Alphas91, sorry it has taken me so long to respond, but I knew I was going to have to look up those old stats. I don’t know if the relatively new Humanities & Social Sciences Scholars Program (H3SP) is looking at any of the same factors and the Karsh STEM Scholars program has changed over the years. The director of the Karsh Stem Scholars was on a Podcast where he listed cohort 2’s stats (3.8 GPA, 1371 SAT avg., 30 ACT) which was the cohort that my oldest student was in. I saw a couple of years of data afterwards and the students stats were trending slightly higher than cohort 2 (Karsh is now getting applications for Cohort 8). But things have changed some (SAT and ACT are now optional and that was not the case when either of my kids applied to Howard or the scholarship programs) and the Karsh STEM Scholars program has the students take a Virtual/Online Math Placement Test that factors into who is chosen to attend T.R.A.C.K.S. (Talent Recruitment and Choosing Karsh Scholars) Weekend every March.

I started CC threads for both scholarships and you are welcome to take a look at both links as they may have some info from others who have applied to each of the scholarship programs.

I call it the “middle class abyss”. And that’s exactly where we are.

Has anyone heard updates regarding their child’s 2024 HS3P appl?

We applied to Karsh stem and received an update that no decision has been made, and still under review.

We received the same email this morning for the HS3 program. I am thankful for the update. Howard is our D24’s 1st choice (by far). She’s attended a private pwi for L-12 and VERY MUCH wants to attend an HBCU.
However, her current merit offer from Howard is not comparable to what is being offered by LSU.
She’s worked hard and we would love for her to attend where she truly wants to attend, but taking on heavy debt for undergrad doesn’t make good fiscal sense. God will put her where she should be… but the waiting?
It’s mAdDneSS!!!

Same for my son. Howard is his top choice but the plan is to follow the money. He would love the opportunity to attend, praying and not so patiently waiting for things to fall into place.

My son received notification today that he’s a semifinalist for karsh stem scholarship!

My son is early action moved to regular decision. He’s a semifinalist for KARSH Cohort 8. However, LSU’s scholarship offer is bar none. I totally agree with you. I will not incur any debt for undergrad. He has received full rides from a few other HBCU’s but we’re holding out for Howard and praying he gets accepted into the Cohort and a full ride. If not, decisions, decisions, decisions.

Your story is very similar to my K-2 Howard graduate. My oldest had full ride offers from quite a few HBCUs but she was always leaning towards Howard. She had received what amounted to full tuition from 2 separate Howard scholarships. Back in 2018, they had to take the math test and do the entire Karsh weekend of interviews with about 100 other scholars. Being selected in Cohort 2 is still the most excited thing that has ever happened to her and I am praying :pray:t5: for your son and your family. I can tell you that Karsh has changed my entire household’s life. My wife is going to retire 6-8 years earlier than initially planned as having 2 Karshies saved my family ~380K in educational expenses.

P.S. We visited LSU during my kids college visits and that campus was amazing.

We missed the LSU event that was scheduled this past Friday. I heard it’s very nice! A few of my high school classmates that were graduates of Howard kids were moved to regular decision as well. It was always an HBCU for him. I told him that was his only option.:joy: We’ll keep our fingers crossed!

Our daughter was accepted EA at Howard with the $20k achievers scholarship, but did not advance to the 2nd round of HS3P prg. Her letter seemed to indicate her post graduation plans (law school) did not line up with the true mission of the program. Our D REALLY wants to go to Howard, but realistically $20k to $50k is a huge gap. What schools did your son get into w/full merit?
D applied late (Jan 2) to FAMU and Hampton as a possibles. However, we’re in Tx and her LSU offer was signif and issued as “initial” offer with more funding to be offered in March.

My EA daughter hasn’t received a single thing from Howard since accepted in December except an email about FAFSA. Has anyone received any snail mail or info about admitted students weekend or anything? All her other acceptances have sent proper letters in mail and flood her inbox almost everyday…HU is my alma mater and I’ve dreamed of her going her whole life, but I’m starting to have serious doubts about sending her there. (We only got 15k Merit so $$$$).

My D was also admitted in December (portal notification), but we have not received a formal/mailed letter of acceptance.
Her award letter was the electronic portal acceptance letter. I have heard others make mention of an admitted students day in April, but have not received anything from HU. We were hoping for more merit, but I’m starting to loose hope.

HU '93 grad here and my EA son hasn’t heard much either. No snail mail or even any emails. I’m like “Hello? Is anybody there? He did get accepted, right?”, lol. We haven’t even seen any communication asking for money.

Anecdotally speaking, everyone I’ve talked to who has sent their children to Howard over the last several years has spoken about disappointment with their interactions with Administration, in stark contrast to students who went to other schools. For some reason, Howard can’t seem to get the administration part of the experience right, even 30 years later. In general, our son is the type of person who doesn’t have much patience for people or groups who don’t have their ish together, so unfortunately Howard has fallen down a few spots on his list.

If you don’t mind me asking, what other hbcu offer full merit rides?

Fisk, Dillard, Alabama A&M, Southern University, Morehouse/Spelman(Only 25 given from each from what I’m told), FAMU, North Carolina A&T, Prairie View A&M, Tennessee State, Howard does for their Karsh STEM Scholars program, Tuskegee offer full rides. Norfolk does but has an excellent tuition program for out of state students, seriously discounted), Jackson State. I believe Xavier and Hampton but very small number of them offered.
