So I’m dealing with back to school shopping for the boys, and “having” to buy Northface, black socks, Underarmour…which of course, got me thinking. What were the “have to have” things from our generation? My high school attention time to fashion is late '70s. early '80s, so I remember:

Nik Nik shirts

Brittanica Jeans

Patchwork shirts, skirts, etc.

Danskin Disco wear

Pleated plaid skirt, Oxford blouse, Blazer, knee hi socks and saddle shoes (Catholic school uniform)

Ankle length, halter top sundresses (I’ve noticed these have made a comeback)

Platform shoes

Polyester, high waisted, flared leg pants

Bandolino Sandals

Capezio sandals

I remember going down to the Fred Braun store on 8th St to buy a purse. Oh, did I love that thing, and I used it all through college too.I had one pair of shoes from there. too. I graduated from high school in 1970, so I go back quite a ways. Remember when “Dr. Zhivago” came out and all the Russian-type dresses were hot? And argyle “mod” tights? And Mondrian geometrics? And how sneakers were bad for your feet, so your parents wouldn’t let you have them? And when pants were not appropriate school attire? Even for us in the Bronx!

It seems like most items we wore have become popular again, at some point. Someone needs to resurrect white go-go boots from the 60’s or how about Units/Multiples from the 80’s?

late 70’s/early 80’s
Sperry Topsiders
LL Bean mocassins
Ralph Lauren polos
Tally Ho sweaters
sundresses with bright flowers
levi’s denim and corduroy pants
plaid wool skirts
navy blue wool blazers
interchangeable belt “strips” so your belt matched the rest of the outfit
button down collar oxford cloth shirts solid or striped
Add-a-bead necklaces…the more beads the better.
Candies shoes
jumpsuits

pageturner…I had a Bermuda bag with lots of diff. covers. My Mom was a great seamstress so made a variety of them for me so I could match virtually any outfit. She could even monogram them.
We were all pretty into the preppy scene back then.

My high school and college days were the '70s, but from junior high I remember Chukka boots (with fish net stockings). Chukkas are back at all the stores.

bright green papagalo (sp?) shoes
pin-whale Levi cords (it was very important what color the “butt” tag was…don’t remember why)
cowl neck sweaters with monogram “pins” stuck in them
painter’s pants
splatter-painted shirts

anybody have the one-piece spandex gym uniform (mine was a tasteful orange and white striped number that snapped at the shoulders…YIKES! who’s bright idea…?!)

denim skirts made out of old jeans
knee socks
the white socks girls wore with tennis shoes that had the different colors of puff balls that stuck out at the heel.

Chemin de Fer jeans
Dittos pants with that big saddle shaped seam drawing attention to your bum, so attractive, I guess that’s why 14 year olds wore them!
