I remember bell bottoms from the army-navy surplus store. I was devastated that I had real girl hips and could not wear them. And those Dittos! I busted so many zippers. Clothing designers are so cruel.

I saw wide wale corduroys in a mens store last night - are they coming back?!

When I started college here in SoCal in 1980:

Dolphin shorts
K-swiss tennis shoes
Lacoste polo shirts (collars turned up)
Topsiders (no socks)
Sergio Valente jeans
Crewneck sweaters
Long sleeve button down shirts (colors turned up)

I loved Dr. Scholl’s sandals until I walked too fast and my foot slipped and I felt like I bruised my heel. My sisters used to tell me my legs were skinny and toned from wearing those all the way through my teen years.

Bell bottoms with crop tops. Not to school, though. And voile blouses with see-through sleeves. And ruffle blouses, which are now in every store window.
Anyone remember “nothing blouses”, which were just plain jewel neck long sleeved shirts with darts? They were the must-have at my HS.

How cool! I can still see how it would be flattering.

Does anyone still sew? Back in HS and college, I truly made all my clothes, except for winter coats, sweaters and jeans. I made overalls. I made cowgirl shirts with snaps. I made flannel footed pajamas. I made a wedding dress and several bridesmaid dresses. Now I only sew for Halloween. And it’s very very difficult to find fabrics.

I sew–should be putting swags on a board as I type this. I also made all my clothes in high school. This thread made me think of a pair of red brushed denim pants I made with double white zippers on the front–kind of off to each side. I wore them in a fashion show for the fabric store where I worked. I was so cool. And thin.

Love, love, loved the Dr. Scholl’s sandals.

I haven’t sewed anything but window treatments for years…since maybe about the time my younger D quit wearing smocked dresses? Maybe a couple piano-recital velvet dresses when older D was in middle school?
I do still have (but can’t fit into) the one and only tailored suit that I ever made. It must have the world’s most sweeping pointy lapels! Ivory linen, worn with a teal blouse with a huge bow (think Dustin Hoffman in “Tootsie”)

I used to sew quite a bit - used Vogue patterns in HS for this utterly ridiculous Japanese designer - I looked like Emperor Hirohito. How embarrassing!
I also sewed my S baby clothes - I was trying to adjust to the whole SAHM thing and it turned into Diary of a Mad Housewife. (It got better…)

Dragonmom, that’s when I quit sewing too. For my daughter’s sixth birthday her Godmother bought her a Lily Pullitzer A line dress and that was the end of the smocked dresses for her. Anything that was full was deemed a “baby dress” and it was a huge battle to get it on her. I still have smocked panels that were ready to be sewn that I never finished. I am hoping for a granddaughter to sew them for someday.

A few more:
Tretorn Canvas Tennis shoes
Adidas Stan Smith Leather Tennis Shoes
Boys Tennis Shorts with Izod polo shirts (I hated tennis skirts!)
Polyester warm-up suits with the stripes down the sides
My favorite brown striped bikini, which Cheryl Ladd wore on the intro to Charlie’s Angels

The tragic thing about the cowl neck sweaters with the pin is that I was about 21 when they were in style…I should have been at the peak of any hotness I possessed and instead was wearing cowl neck sweaters!

And after Dr. Scholls went OUT…Earth Shoes…remember those? Where the toe was higher than the heel?

My sister’s first wedding: the groom wore a beige and brown plaid suit…and Earth shoes. (And 36 years later, his hair is still just as long, although now gray instead of blonde. Bet he still has those Earth shoes.)

Earth Shoes are not dead! You can still buy them. But who does?

Oh yes, Tretorn canvas tennis shoes. They were our uniform shoes when I was a cheerleader in h.s. Our sch. colors were red and gold so naturally we have the ones with the red “V” on the sides.

DH(class of '77) wore Puma tennis shoes in h.s. He can’t belive they have made a style resurgence.

How about Converse high tops for basketball? And now kids where Chucks in all different colors.

Circle pins

ID bracelets

Anyone else wear their h.s. boyfriend’s class ring with wax dripped inside to make it fit?

I used to sew all my clothes. In fact, I have a drawer full of Vogue pattern pieces cut that I never got around to sewing, and now I’d have to lose 50 lbs. to fit into them. From 8th grade on, I sewed everything except swimsuits, jeans & underwear. Made my wedding dress. Have made numerous quilts as gifts over the year. I made some of my kids clothes (including matching black suits for a 2 yr. old and 9 yr. old for niece’s wedding), but not a lot because it wasn’t as much fun to sew for boys.

Also have knitted using a machine and done a lot of crocheting. (I have a beautiful crocheted tablecloth that is 3/4 finished but I’ve been working on it for more then 25 yrs.).

When I took my present job, I just didn’t have time any more. I still do an occasional project around the house, curtains, drapes & window treatments, a travel jewelry bag, and other odd projects.

glasses with the “low swooped” sides in gi-normous sizes (tinted, of course!). we looked like “maude”

OMG!!! how about those one-piece terry shorts/tube top things that are back in the stores this summer!!! YIKES! I had two of those that, yes, I sewed myself

both of my prom dresses looked like lingerie… straight quiana (sp?) stretch material, spaghetti straps with a sheer little “jacket” over the top

Oh heaven’s no:) We wrapped the ring in mohair…no kidding.

Which reminds me…how about mohair sweaters???
