I'd like to delete my account (not posts)

How can I delete my account? I’ve seen it suggested in a few places that this isn’t possible. But isn’t that a GDPR violation? I believe the law allows me to delete my account if I want to.

@chzbrgr, as per our TOS we do not delete accounts on College Confidential.

@CCadmin_Sorin : I don’t believe that is responsive to the GDPR portion of the question.

He’s answered the question before:

Yeah, that’s completely unconvincing. They don’t give any explanation of why the GDPR “doesn’t apply”. The website is available in Europe (I’m at home in DK now), so the law applies. I’m going to make a formal request under the right to erasure.

Euro laws don’t apply to American companies unless they have locations or headquarters in Europe. Your presence here is voluntary.

BTW, you are in violation of the Georgia ordinance that requires you to own a firearm.

Yes but the site does have a presence in Europe – it’s available here and no doubt has some lcal European servers or CDNs. Other American sites that don’t want to comply with the GDPR just make themselves unavailable in Europe.

I don’t know the details of the Georgia law, but I do own a firearm btw.

What is big deal if having an account? Log out and don’t visit anymore.

Wasn’t asking for advice, thanks. I just want to assert my legal rights.

And if an account isn’t a big deal… why won’t they let people delete them? They are the only site I can think of with this policy. It’s a bit odd, isn’t it?

But she is allowed to give her advice/opinion too, regardless of whether it is requested.

That’s fair! Unasked advice is obnoxious, but we are allowed to be obnoxious.

Two reasons. I’m trying to cut down on internet use, so I don’t get dragged into arguments like this. No account, no (less) temptation to post.

Also deleting accounts you no longer use is good security practice. Sites get hacked all the time, and very often the details that are hacked from one site (like password or email or answers to security questions) allow people to hack into other sites, like your email address.

Seems to me her advice was perfectly reasonable. She isn’t the one being obnoxious
If you don’t want to participate, don’t. Turn off all notifications and don’t open the site. The TOS are pretty clear, if read, and there are a gazillion posts here asked and answered about bot deleting accounts.

Have a good day.

It’s semantics, but if deactivation, as opposed to deletion, of your account is your goal, that can be done. That accomplishes your goal of cutting down your internet use and enabling others to (unlikely as it may be) hack into your account. Your past posts, however, remain.

Right, that’s what I’m asking for – permanent deactivation. I can’t see a way to do that in the control panel either.

Accommodated user’s request. Closing thread.
