I'm Black - UVA or William and Mary?

Hey guys! I’ve been lucky enough to be admitted to both WM and UVA for this coming fall semester. I’m having trouble deciding between the two because they are both wonderful but so very different. However, when I visited both campuses I couldn’t help but notice that everything seemed a bit… racially homogenous?

Minorities out there who go to UVA/WM how is your experience there? I’m a bit concerned about UVA in particular because I hear people say that there are a lot of racists and that it’s hard to make friends if you aren’t preppy and white. Is it really true? My mom also has reservations about me going to Charlottesville because she’s heard about Nazi rallies there and doesn’t think I’d be safe moving about the city.

Any insight would be super helpful!!!

Uva is fine and has more blacks than W&M by a long shot as does the city–Cville is very liberal.

How much time will they give you to decide? See if the multicultural admissions rep can put you in touch with a current AA student or faculty member.

According to College Navigator, for entering freshman in Fall 2015 :

UVa: 61% white, 6% black
W&M: 59% white, 7% black

Not a lot of difference there. However, UVa has a much larger undergraduate enrollment (16,736) than W&M (6,301). So assuming that those percentages apply to all undergraduates, then there would be about 1,000 black undergrads at UVa vs. about 440 at W&M.

Their black student unions have facebook pages and webpages.
