India Class of 2015 Results Thread (RD)

LOL.

I don’t consider myself a ‘master’ but I think I know a fair amount now to be able to advise others well.

Welcome eagle! We don’t have many south indians on this thread but the ones who are here are very lovable. None from Coimbatore or TN though. I know a little about coimbatore as my grandfather spent some years there and has told me stories. Have you ever visited India?

Yeah! I mean, look at PrincetonDreams. He says he doesn’t think of himself as Indian, yet he keeps coming here to annoy us all. ;)

PD, I never asked, which part of India are you from?

The good part.

Well well, aren’t you the smart one.

@perfectpixie congrats on your admissions! By the way, there is historical evidence that suggests that Pakistan is the good part of the Indian subcontinent.

Eagle1992, I like you.

^ ROFL

Yes, hi Eagle 1992. And hi Maxxwell, never seen you here before.

hi Putturani! “never seen you here before” Really? You need to brush up on your history. I did History HL last year. Would have loved to come here more often but it is hard to escape from the place where fun goes to die.

Hi,*
1 question…
Say what if I get 90+ in my boards do you still think I have a chance at the Ivies?

Thanks,
Alan

I’m talking about my ISC 12th boards…

Hey Maxxwell! I am a recent addition to the India forum. I think I will learn what it is to be busy when I go to UChicago’s smaller cousin on the east coast - Swarthmore. Think decision’s done people!

Btw, to actually say something on topic - I got waitlisted from the University of Michigan, like pretty much everybody else. Who cares tho!

colleges won’t see your 12th grade board marks.
Gr 11 is most important. or even 12th grade 1st term.

@Tiyas- How do you know that the people who got in (W/O asking for substantial FA at need aware colleges) were not good at a “thing”. Cornell is, from what I have learnt, very fond of dancers (they even have a punjabi bhangra group, a very renowned one). Maybe that was your hook. Likewise, Yale looks favourably at musicians (again, from what I know). I have certain american friends who have interned at Stanford and Dartmouth’s ADcoms… Stanford, for most Intl applicants needing full FA, looks for an international award (I said, most applicants. Exceptions exist). I can bet my life on the fact that people who’ve got into HYP from India were really good at a “thing”. A guy I know who got Caltech+P’ton this year is a game designer. His graphics engine (or something similar) is being used by many pros for development. Another friend is an excellent percussionist. Yale waitlist… Rejected by HP. Look, I AM NO EXPERT. But from what I have observed, MIT looks for medals like IMOs, Yale looks for high SAT I scores+music, Cornell likes dancers etc etc. STATISTICS need to be acknowledged.
HYP look for people with tremendous reading and writing abilities (Their SAT I average for admitted freshmen is somewhere around 2250). It’s 2150 for Stanford and even lower for MIT. Keep the 2250 in mind, and, on top of that, you have legacy and athletic recruits + you have certain musicians, artisists etc who would obviously have scored lower on the SAT. So people w/o extraordinary ECs who get into HYP are people with extraordinary SAT I scores (I’m told that the admit rate for 2400 SAT I applicants is close to 50% at H). Well, this is just an unfathomable enigma. Leave it. What I knew, I told Alan. The final decision is, of course, his. Just because you got into Cornell because you think u weren’t a fab applicant doesn’t mean that you were indeed not a fab applicant. And remember, there are 1 in a thousand cases like you…
Another thing I’d like to point out is that the school you attend MATTERS. NOW, SOME PEOPLE MAY SAY THAT I’M AN IDIOT. But this is what I believe. Take DPS RKP, TISB, Dhirubhai Ambani, MUWC Pune and some more top schools… you’ll have more than 80% of Indian Ivy leaguers sampled. Damn!

Thank you Maxxwell! Nice to see you around here, it’s been a long time. :)

Good lord, this is getting ridiculous. Didn’t you say this earlier?

My honest answer to your question is: no.

Nishad: I don’t agree with most of what you said. Especially not the part where you characterized what each school is looking for. There’s no formula as such. I came across a video by Harvard in which Dean Fitzsimmons mentioned that there are around 300 academic geniuses in one class, ~300 students who are absolutely amazingly spectacular in their ECA, but the rest of each class comprises of very well rounded applicants who are good in both academics and ECs. I think this would hold true for HYP.

I think what’s important is to be well rounded, but also to show unequalled passion for some of your activities, I think that is what does the trick. Being involved in many was not a detriment to my cause.

In other news, Woody Woo just turned non selective from the class of 2015. It’s official. Joy and happiness. :(

@Pixie- Very well rounded applicants is what I indirectly meant. But then you have to stand out from the crowd of 4.0ers (:P) too… And you do that by being outstanding in some “thing”. I am SURE YOU ARE BRILLIANT AT THINGS APART FROM ACADEMICS. Maybe swimming, table tennis, badminton… Some big awards for, am, maybe public speaking or essay writing etc etc. You definitely must be well rounded, I never said that “being involved in many wwould be a detriment to one’s cause”. But you need to be outstanding at something. Maybe a 2400 on the SAT (Did you get that? Very likely)…

Whohho! I just read Pixie’s ECs… I HOPE YOU DON’T MIND ME POSTING A COUPLE OF THEM HERE… They’re available on CC anyways:

AND THESE WERE NOT UPDATED… + SHE DID LOADS OF OTHER MIND-BLOWING STUFF…
People, Perfectpixie was not just well rounded, but was very good at probably 2-4 things. No wonder she got into H n P!

Thanks a lot Nishad.

It looks better than it is, really. My real profile was toned down. :o
And I’m sure most of my future classmates will have similar profiles.

and the last part of your post is exactly what Tiyas was saying. :/

Haha it was what I was saying too… that you need to be outstanding at a “thing”…

Okay… the thing about Woody Woo, does that mean you’re ditching Harvard?

Congrats Putturani!

“I am a recent addition to the India forum.” No, you are not. :)

The Road Not Taken
Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth.

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I–
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.*
