S24 committed today. We’re very excited and proud of him!
My son will be attending IU. We went to Red Carpet Day and he made up his mind. I thought maybe he would choose CU which was the early frontrunner. But IU is his place! Economics major OOS - from NJ. He’s very excited, as are we. Good luck to all!
Hoping this is the correct forum to ask these freshman-related questions:
- Is it recommended to take Finite / Calculus during summer (before starting school in Fall)? If yes, will any community college do or it has be an Indiana specific-one?
- Is there any studying that needs to be done for Placement exams for Math and English (New Student Orientation)? What is covered in those exams?
Thanks!
My son has committed! We have secured a hotel for parents weekend for a ridiculous rate, has anyone who has committed gotten any information about orientation?
Are there any special hotels that you need to book for Parents weekend? My son most likely will commit this week and trying to get details ready. Thanks
Most of the Bloomington Hotels are booked out and the prices are ridiculous. (Like 800-900 per night)
So be prepared.
We were able to secure the Hampton Inn for 400/night and I’m sure it is scary/but at least it is close.
The university rep we met at our local scholarship dinner said many people stay in Indy and Columbus because the hotels are so much more reasonable.
Plenty of options there. Everything we saw was minimum 2 night stay…
Parents Weekend is Sept 27-29
Thanks for the details and sorry about a dumb question, what is Parents weekend? What do they expect us to do?
I do not know the area well, what is Indy/Columbus? How far are they? Is that the town name?
Parents weekend is a weekend in the fall where parents are invited to come to campus for a football game, visit their kids, and see the campus. It is usually a lot of fun, but since Bloomington is not a huge town, hotel space is limited. Indy is short for Indianapolis. It is about 30 minutes north. So lots of hotel space there.
Columbus is a similar size town about 30 minutes east. Lots of hotels there without the upcharge.
Thanks. I will look try to book something now.
Couldn’t get in on time for Red Carpet Day.
Kind of disappointed there was not enough days/room for everyone to attend. We’ll be doing a Discover IU Day instead.
Any suggestions on hotels in the area?
Can you get a room at the Biddle? it is literally right on campus. If not we stayed at Springhill Suites on college Street. It was nice. About a 15 minute walk from the campus, or your could drive.
What does it mean to be admitted to University Division? Kid was admitted to pre-college of arts and science with intended major or biochemistry (which she applied for). I read their website but to me the whole process seems pretty vague except that you take some classes and “apply” for your intended major and the school may “grant” you to a degree program. What happens if the school does not grant you admission to the degree program?
TBH, I’m kind of getting discouraged about my kid attending a university that can’t even get her in on Admitted Students Day OR a campus tour during a Discover IU Day the entire month of April! We down to the wire with decisions. Seems a bit disorganized if you can’t fit all your admitted students into at least one day. Either that or ppl are bringing every relative they have to their session ![]()
My daughter has a friend who goes there and he said he would be happy to give us a tour. Albeit, it is not his responsibility…esp for $56k/yr.
If you just show up they totally add you to the tour. Or your kid could call and ask.
Mine did and they totally got added on.
Are you able to jus1t join in the campus tour / academic sessions on discover iu day when they are full? All sessions are full and it seems pointless to fly out from west coast just for a walk on the campus.
Does anyone know when housing closes in terms of being able to provide your choices for dorms?
Also, does anyone have a daughter looking for a roommate?
I thought this only happens for IU Kelly Business…looks this is the practice in Art and Sciences also…
Hi! Looking at orientation dates. Are you planning on going with your student to orientation?
Why doesn’t anyone talk about taking Math 201 (Brief Calculus) from Ivy Tech (summer online course) instead of Math 211 (Calculus I)? Wouldn’t 201 be an easier course than 211 since it’s an introductory course? Please let me know your thoughts so we can make the correct decision. TIA.
As per IU Credit Transfer Services, both courses can be transferred over to satisfy IU’s I-Core pre-req Math 211.
S24 is accepted to Kelley School of Business. We visited for the Kelley direct admit day and even though they just had 9 inches of snow and we’re from Florida he loved it. Beautiful campus, great college town, and although I don’t know what your daughter’s major would be they are strong in a lot of different areas. We are waiting on the financial aid package since decision day has been kicked to June 1. Son is also accepted at Wisconsin and Florida and is very torn, all three are great options.
