Good grief! I didn’t even realize they were last year’s numbers!
Iowa sounds perfect!
Last year we went into this journey with the idea of “best rated college wins” but the ratings don’t show things like how supportive or safe the community is. That was most important to me. Main Street was really quiet when we walked down on a Fri night bc Greek houses were doing meet and greets on campus. There was a girl by herself on her laptop sitting on a bench. You can’t do that in Memphis! And everyone says you can leave your car doors unlocked with your tech inside and nobody will take it. That’s where I need my daughter to be. She really wanted Ohio State (a hard target for her) but, from what I’ve heard, not safe outside of campus. And Iowa State is building a new area around the stadium called CyTown that will be completed by August 2025. Like I said, I was really impressed with the CyRide bus, the safety, the beauty of the campus, the walkability to Main Street, the College of Design program, and the off campus housing is clean, plentiful, and most is surprisingly modern. I feel like this school is a hidden gem in the middle of the midwest. LOL.
On that note, we are visiting Mizzou and Indiana for the first time this month. So we’ll see.
Was the bbq place Hickory Park?
No it was a few minutes outside of town in Luther called WHATCHA SMOKIN.
My God, I’m salivating over their brisket and burnt pork ends as I type.
Good to know! We are always looking for good bbq recs but not sure we’ll make it to Luther! If brisket is done right, well…
Like I said, just a few minutes outside of town but well worth the trip…we went twice in a 3-night trip. LOL. You would think, living in Memphis, we get the best, but no. You have to go downtown and there are just one or two joints worth it. I make better pulled pork than some of these places.
Let’s return focus on the university, please. If the users want to compare notes on BBQ joints, please move to PM, or start a new thread.
I have not been to any of the schools in Iowa. Indiana has a small town feel but there is a TON to do. The faculty and students have the midwestern, friendly, and down to earth vibe we were looking for. My daughter has had a few struggles with girls at school as well. The campus is gorgeous. Business, music, and I believe some of their art programs are ranked insanely high. Business is #8 behind Cornell for undergraduate. That being said, if graduate school is in the picture then the cost may be an even bigger factor and if she likes another school that is less expensive then go for it! Unfortunately, that was not the case for us.
We will be visiting Indiana over the next few weeks. I know she will be charmed by it. This is becoming a much harder decision than we anticipated
Sorry about that :-(. It’s lunchtime here and I got carried away. LOL.
We visited Bloomington twice during the college decision process…once in early August (sunny and warm) and once for Hamilton Lugar Day in early March (cold and rainy). Both visits were almost annoyingly good…that is, our kid was so impressed by the campus and the people at IU (and particularly at HLS) that our in-state options paled in comparison when they visited those.
“Annoyingly good.”
Anyone have feedback on double majoring in different colleges? Daughter is poli sci in arts and sciences but would also want to major (or minor) in policy studies which is in o neill. I’m worried that this will be complicated, IU seems pretty rigid.
There were several tour guides that were doing this and my good friends daughter is a major in the SPEA school with a minor in the Kelly School of business so I don’t think it’s an issue.

Hi! Current IU student here. IU’s Gen Ed curriculum is pretty flexible and there is no cap on the double-counting of classes, hence many, many students take on double majors, additional minors etc. A lot of times it is very possible to add-on an additional certificate or minor with only 2 or 3 extra classes.
Poli Sci (in Arts & Sciences) is pretty theoretical though. Mainly for students who want to do a PhD and then academia. A lot of friends I knew switched into either Law and Public Policy (in the O’Neill School) or International Law and Institutions (in the Hamilton-Lugar School). There is even a business-focused Policy Analysis major in Kelley.
Son accepted to Hamilton Lugar and very interested, but the OOS cost may push this down our list.
Yes, thanks. We didn’t realize that when she listed that as the major. Think the policy ones are better fit.
