Thatâs what almost all
Colleges require when deferred. A letter of continued interest is pretty standard. A way to weed out those not really that interested.
Just got the email. Deferral asking to write an essay. Moving on and glad to do so! Kelley review will not happen in time even if he submits. Pointless! Truly obnoxious for them to ask for an essay now. They are trying to play the Kelley card too much ! Thanks everyone and Good Luck!
This letter of continued interest would be for IUB. Again Kelley hasnât even seen his application yet and wonât until
He gets into IUB. So if he wants to be there heâll write the essay. Itâs not absurd. If he was deferred from anywhere else a LOCI is standard procedure.
Agree. Many donât ask and also not an essay for sure. Good luck.
Their decision date was always by January 15th. And the essay shouldnât be seen as obnoxious. Itâs another piece of data they feel they need. If he doesnât want to do it he doesnât want to go to IU.
With respect, parentsâŠplease let your students make the decision if they want to stay in the pool and if that requires an essay and some effort, it should be the studentâs decision (no matter what school we are talking about.)
I know college admissions can be an emotional and/or stressful time, but the more parents step back, the more space the student has to make the best decision for them. Good luck.
They received a timely responseâŠby January 15th. Asking for additional information or continued interest is part of the game. All
Colleges do it. Good for your kid if got into higher ranked programs. Then there shouldnât be the need for such sour grapes
We may probably need a new thread for the Fall 2025 Admits. Not sure who can help with this? Thanks
How are they playing the Kelley card? If he didnât have DA stats for Kelley he must compete with all the others trying for IU. Doesnât seem obnoxious to me.
I am curious what is the essay question?
Thanks⊠I am just relaying my kids take on this after seeing the deferral. He had a 30 min zoom interview with a Kelley admission counsellor and she encouraged him to submit the review petition despite his GPA not making the cut for direct admission, his SAT does. He wrote essay for 3 Kelley prompts and all were submitted mid October. He is frustrated by not the deferral but asking for another essay. The process is stressful and admission counsellors should recognize it. Could have given this update in Dec. So, kids and parents are rightful to have a critique of this process. A denial or straight deferral would have been better! Just as colleges make their choices, kids too have choice and they will go with their impression and interests. thanks
Thank you for your continued interest in Indiana University. We are thrilled you are considering this opportunity to include additional information for our continued review of your application. Please submit this statement and any new academic information as soon as possible. You will receive an updated response by March 15, 2025. In 200â400 words, describe your academic and career goals and any special interests (for example, undergraduate research, internships, education abroad, leadership and service opportunities, etc.) that you are eager to pursue as an undergraduate at Indiana University. How do you believe the experiences and knowledge you have already gained throughout your life will help you be successful and contribute to your IU community
Absolutely.
But donât throw the baby out with the bath waterâŠitâs emotional for the students and this can be a teaching moment that even if initially upset, if Kelley is still a top choice, why not one more essay and another month or two of waiting. Of course if Kelley is far down the list, easy to move on and never think about it again. (advice applies to any school)
This really just seems like an expanded LOCI as my daughter did research on Clemson and spent quite a bit of time adding in why Clemson was a good fit. They just want to see interestâŠthat essay doesnât seem that bad and itâs 200 or so words.
Exactly. Pick a class or two that you want to take, a professor youâd like to do research for (that represents a good fit with your ECs or interests), and a club and/or service org youâd like to join.
Good news is, maybe, - there wonât be a lot of posts or questions from this point forward to need new threads. Hutton is pretty quiet and scholarships are pretty minimal post-admission. Kelley petitions used to be a big topic but now not so much as most petitions are deferred (too soon?) and people have already decided to attend or not.
Hopefully FAFSA is better than last year and May 1 is a great decision date this year. Until 2026âŠ
âHoosier bootlicker attitudeâ was funny I had to google that one. Iâm definitely guilty of my Hoosier love. @Mwfan1921 said what I tried to soooo much better!
Yes but that isnât what IU is asking for. Theyâre asking for a 200-400 word planned essay.
You said yourself that your son didnât have the GPA to make direct admission. Maybe lots of applicants after him did? Maybe his essays were good, but not great? They are giving him another chance, but if writing another essay is too daunting, then maybe this school isnât for him.
Many other schools have supp essays that kids complete on the common app along with their main essay that would satisfy this. At this point it should be enough to write a well thought out letter of continued interest like almost 99% of schools want from deferred applicants. A 200-400 word essay is significantly more than a letter (esp psychologically) for these kids at this point in the college process. I think itâs obnoxious and itâs my right to think this and I donât think I need to be chided for doing so. Best of luck to everyone.
