This process has been very disappointing. Still waiting for response. Hope admissions pulls an all nighter bc these EA students deserve a response by tomorrow.
You arenât addressing your response to me but do you really think any kid in mid Jan after applying to a gazillion schools and writing a gazillion essays wants to sit down and write another essay? Maybe to you an essay isnât that much more daunting than a letter at this juncture but for lots of kids who are exhausted by this process itâs a whole other can of worms. I just think this school didnât handle this well. You donât throw an essay on the table more than halfway thru the process. Itâs just obnoxious.
Many schools do this to make sure kids are really interested in attending if they are on the cusp and guess what? The ones who really want to go, write the essay. The ones who donât want to write it will go somewhere else. The Kelley School of Business will not have a problem filling their spots. No one ever claimed this was an easy process.
Maybe it is best we donât make assumptions on why this happened. Every kid knows he wonât be accepted to all colleges and they know it when they research on schools- safety, target and reach. IU is a safety for him! Kelley direct admission is hard. He knew it when he applied and his essays were good that he got accepted to Penn State, MSU (with aid) and a couple more safeties with merit aid. Unlike some colleges, deferrals donât ask this type of essay. Additionally, Kelley review starts Feb and judging to hear back by March 15, it will be too late for kelley review due to the asynchronous nature of IU and Kelley petition review. If there was no need for Kelley review (which wonât happen till admitted to IU), there is some sense in writing the essay. That is why we are highlighting the faulty process.
There is no such thing as a safety anymore in college admissions!
I disagree. it is still largely valid for most decent stats applicants
Name some colleges that ask deferred students to write an additional structured essay as a way of demonstrating continued interest please bc Iâve never heard of any other college that does this. Iâm not talking about letters of continued interest. An essay. If there are I stand corrected but Iâve literally never heard of this before.
Does anyone know the acceptance rate based only on the population that gets asked for additional info? Any success stories or is just a way to move the goalpost?
University of Michigan!
Do they have similar process for direct admission to business schoolâŠlike Kelley review petition. It was a reach for my kid and he knew very well and so did not apply.
For international, you can have both. We are international and requested for the normal portal.
Have any Sports Management Majors on this board been accepted yet? I know the School of Public Health tends to come out later according to this board but have seen a few acceptances on here for PH but not sure if they were SM specific. Still waiting and no change on the portal at all. Fingers crossed!
You apply directly to Ross, their metrics arenât as clear as Kelleyâs.
UMICH requires a lot of them including a Portfolio of essays and other stuff for Direct Business applicationâŠ
Has that changed in recent years bc a few years ago that wasnât the case. Kids wrote letters expressing their continued interest not essays. And thatâs also one other school.
And also, not everyone who was deferred (and annoyed by this essay) applied to Kelly and while IU is a âgood schoolâ I donât think itâs even close to being in the same echelon as Michigan for most other programs.
My kidâs only reason to apply to IU was for Kelley. There are better choices for other majors (except nursing) than IU for his profile. Most apply to IU due to Kelley unlike other UM or other programs with overall high ranked programs.
The deferral essay for Michigan has been since at least 2021.
Thanks. I will still try to convince my kid to write the supplemental essay but the timelines for Kelley petition review will make it too late. He will have to decide on his other offers by April to get assured housing which is a big issue in many places.
Humble request - Please donât spam this discussion by complaining repeatedly about writing an essay for deferral. Every school has its own procedures, some of them unique to the school. If the kid is interested, write it. Else move on and we all only wish the very best for each and every kid in here whether at IU or anywhere else. The kids might still need to write additional essays and prepare for interviews etc for scholarships etc. Its all part of the process and if my kid likes the school and they are asking for 10 more essays, she better buckle up and get it doneâŠIts all part of the complicated college app process esp when applying for many schools.
Respectfully, I will grant you I have posted probably too much about this topic today, and perhaps some others have as well. But to suggest that us disgruntled parents should simply not mention our negative take on this essay bc it might be considered âspammingâ this thread is a little silly. Plenty of people on this thread and a ton of other threads on this college forum complain about all kinds of things related to various schoolsâ application processes. I wonât be posting more about IU. We are def not pursuing this deferral so I have no need to post on here anymore. Sincere wishes of luck to all.
