Indiana University Bloomington Early Action for Fall 2025 Admission

Yeah, she definitely has stats. Wanted to get into business school but wasn’t sure about concentration. Not too concerned. I will repost when they update portal.

While we welcome a hearty discussion, there is zero reason to denigrate another person’s PoV. Plus it violates Terms of Service. Please keep the discussion civil.

Can parents not be shocked at a deferral, if they didn’t expect it from a school they pretty much considered safety?
Eventually everyone will get over it, but please don’t try to police someone trying to express their frustrations if they feel like.
You don’t need to read every post if it doesn’t suit you.

Does anyone know when merit aid/scholarships/fin aid will be known after acceptance? Daughter was direct admit for biochem and got in yesterday.

My son received his direct admit to the SPH for Sports Marketing and Management yesterday afternoon. Good luck to your student!

My senior was waitlisted last year. I wonder if this supplemental essay is new, but last year they immediately emailed their admissions rep personally with a really nice letter reinforcing everything that was in their app etc. They received their acceptance only a few days after sending that email!

Many of you may not know me, since I don’t follow this university closely. But let me be clear - compliance with my post above is not optional. No user should be disregarding another’s emotions. And under no circumstances can a user tell another what they can and cannot post. It’s a stressful time for everyone, so let’s do our best to support one another

My student received an email that her portal was updated a few weeks after her acceptance last month.

Then you have a choice. Move on.

Everyone treats these schools godly like up front. But they are businesses.

They get to set the rules.

Consumers can walk. If they are being obnoxious, don’t waste the time thinking about it.

I don’t personally think it’s wrong though. They want to see how bad that deferred candidate wants it - and this is a way to see who’s in the game vs just checking a box bcuz it’s easy

Changing subjects - my student received an email to register for the Red Carpet Day. So, be on the lookout!

I agree - I just find it interesting that a school that is a “good” school but not an “elite” one seems to require that much more from deferred candidates than many if not almost all other more selective schools. It’s kinda random

I’m not sure why you keep saying structured essay. It’s basically just prompts telling you what a letter of continued interest is (which is what many kids write to schools where they’ve been deferred or waitlisted). It’s only 200 words. There can’t be all that much structure in something that short. Shouldn’t take more than an hour or two tops.

Best of luck whatever you decide to do.

It’s actually 200-400 words. I know what a LOCI is. My child has written several already during the last few weeks. Also, a LOCI can be effective but still much more casually written than an actual essay. And also much shorter. A solid letter can be written in 30 mins or less, including time spent proofreading. In my opinion, even a few additional hours of work at this point in the process seems annoying and unnecessary. And obviously many disagree with me and that’s why some will gladly write it and others won’t. It’s just my opinion and this is a forum to discuss many things college related, including opinions.

My OOS D got the deferral email today. Of course she was very disappointed, IUB was at the top of her list, and she was not sure about writing the 200-400 word mini essay and having to wait a little bit longer for a decision. But I explained to her this is how the process works and if IUB is really her top choice then taking a few minutes to write why you want to go and waiting a little longer to hear should not be an issue. She has a few weeks before she needs to submit everything so I told her to take some time and decide if IUB is really where she wants to be. If it is then the very small essay should be the easiest thing she’s ever written. Plus her GPA came up a couple points as well since she submitted transcript in October. So between the essay, GPA increase and all the others that decide not to do it, her chances of getting accepted should improve a little. We will wait to see what she decides!:crossed_fingers:t2::crossed_fingers:t2:

I agree. My daughter even corrected me when I called it an essay and told me “no it’s just a prompt to say why I want to go there”. 200-400 words should seem easy if IUB is really your kids top choice.

Thank you very much. Indeed there is an option to “Ignore” a user which will hide all their content from my feed. Game changer for me. Thanks again

I understand the fatigue of admissions at this point in the process but having been through this before; virtually every college that issues a deferral gives an opportunity to the applicant to restate their case through a letter of interest, supplemental essay or other. As tired as the applicants are, the schools are in a situation with the common app where kids can easily apply to 20 schools with a couple clicks and a credit card, and they have to get a sense of who really is interested. I actually find it a nice opportunity for the kids to reassess what they want to convey to admissions post flurry of mass applications in the fall. I wish we had a breather before my son submitted his DA waiver - I dont even know what he wrote and he was so burned out by that point, I doubt he does either but Kelley is his top choice now so he is sort of regretting it now despite getting into some other great schools.

I’m sorry your son didn’t get the outcome he was hoping for. The college application process is just brutal for these kids. We learned about the ups, downs, surprises (both good and bad), and the overall roller coaster ride of college admissions last year with my oldest daughter. Acceptances to reach and target schools. Denials to reach and target schools. Deferrals, waitlists, LOCIs, essays - all of it. None of it was easy or fun. I remember her being tired and deflated when deferrals, waitlists, and additional requests for information hit her. Denials were almost better because you could move on.

She ended up at a great place and she’s thriving as a first year student. It was one of the schools where she was waitlisted and didn’t find out until June 1st. But it was a long process to get there.

I would encourage your son to think about if he really, really wants to go to Kelly. Hard to do right now as I would imagine he’s disappointed and/or frustrated. But if he does, take a couple days to clear his head and then do the essay. If he likes his other options, move on, and focus on the schools that already want him. I just wanted to share and recognize your frustration with this process. It can be deflating. And I hope your son ends up where he is supposed to be.

Thanks for the encouragement and conveying your impressions on your kids experience. I am more concerned about the timelines as there is an additional step of Kelley review. Its hard for sure, and my kid is reasonably happy with he has got already and expecting more soon. Hope he works on the supplemental essay. I have twins - dealing with 2 kids - in different majors… applied to 13-14 colleges each… luckily both have acceptances in colleges they like to enroll if those are the only ones they will have on hand.

I get what you’re saying. I guess I just consider an additional essay not in the same category as a LOCI or submitting grades, test scores etc. IMO it entails a significantly more work and it just seems a little over the top to me, unless maybe it’s your child’s top one or two choices. Just my opinion. But yeah, it’s hard for these kids to keep at this after several months. I would definitely prefer some denials over deferrals for many reasons.
