Internationals who received aid, tell us about yourselves!

@burak96‌
Congrats! You received a great offer!
So far, I was offered 21k package from Quinnipiac University, which is obviously not enough for me.

@vlad7777 Why did you choose Quinnipiac, just wondering? What can you afford?

I would have included other schools such as UMass Amherst/Lowell which have much better academics. Alabama also a great choice and Maine if you needed a really cost option.

*low cost option.

I think you overlooked the state schools which give internationals merit aid.

Duplicate

@vlad7777 As an example. UMass Lowell is a good engineering school. COA is 33k. The top international scholarship is 16 to 20k, next level down scholarship is 10k. Your final cost could have been between 13k to 23k. There are many UMass alumni working in CS in the Boston area. Many internationals. We know several Russian ones etc…

[quoteOf course, if you can get into one of the six schools that guarantee to meet full financial need for all students including internationals, you are fine.
[/quote]

I think you are confusing need-blind with guarantees to meet full need. The famous six school listed are both: they are need-blind and they guarantee to meet full need; however, there are many other colleges/universities that also guarantee to meet full need for internationals, even though they may not be need-blind.

In my opinion, the whole need-blind criteria is a bit of a red herring anyway. Admissions committees are professionals and can figure out from clues in the application who does and does not need aid. And conversely some of the need-aware schools are some of the most generous with need-based aid for internationals.

This is a partial (and subjective) list of colleges that are not need-blind but guarantee to meet full need for internationals. In other words if you get in and can demonstrate need according to their formulas, you are fairly assured to get the money you need to attend. I’m sure if you research you will find others in this category.

Brown
Colby
Davidson
Emory
Grinnell
Hamilton
Macalester
Middlebury
Pomona
Stanford
Swarthmore
U of Chicago
U of Pennsylvania
Vassar
Wellesley
Wesleyan
Williams

Schools that are worth considering:
Mount Holyoke(female college)
Macalester
U of Alabama: partial~full tuition if you have 3.5GPA and at least Math+CR 1280~1400 or ACT 28~32.
Howard U: Full tuition+room+board if you have 3.5GPA unweighted and math+CR 1400
LSU: full ride merit scholarship. MINIMUM requirement: 1480 math+Cr and 3.8gpa…I think.
Kenyon College
Clark University-LEEP scholarship.
Fordham University: Full tuition scholarship for at least top 10% HS graduates.

@gearmom Choosing Quinnipiac was quite a random and despairing act. I can afford paying no more than 4$ a year, and most of these money will probably be spent on transportation and insurance, if I get accepted, of course. And yes, omitting merit aid is an awful mistake of mine. Quite a shame that I realize it only now when it’s too late. All that remains is to hope for the best.

@vlad7777‌

Another thing you can do is to take a gap year(if you can find a way to stay legally in the US), and re-apply to other schools. However I m not sure how you will do it…what is your visa status?

@paul752 @vlad7777 Couldn’t he take a gap year and apply to a place like Howard where he could get a free ride and laptop? Even if that meant leaving for a year, working and saving money. OP is such a strong candidate. Don’t take any classes if you do take a gap year.

@gearmom @paul2752 The problem is that I am already on my gap year. I am not in the US, I’m in Poland. I had to take a course of Polish language to get a reprieve from a compulsory army service in my country. There is no way I can wait another year without being in army, so if I don’t get accepted, I will study in Poland.

I see. I am glad you have a back up plan.

Hey guys, I’m an international student seeking full aid in lots of colleges (Harvard, Yale, Emory, Dartmouth, etc) I did ED at Dartmouth and got deferred so I’m still waiting. What do you guys think?

Country: Argentina
SAT I: 2090 (CR 670 M 670 W 750)
SAT II: French 670, Lit 720, Spanish 800
TOEFL: 107
GPA 8.5 out of 10
Top 10% of class
EC: Varsity Soccer team captain, National level tenis player, published two fantasy books (250 and 430 pages long) and just got a book deal for my second book with Planeta, the biggest publishing house in the world for spanish speaking people. Lots of other, less important things also.

@vlad7777 Howard’s deadline is not until March 15. I don’t know about scholarship availability but you could apply or contact them. It is a HBC, historically black college in Washington DC. DC could be fun. Lots to do and everything on the mall is free.

@render142 Your GPA and stats might be a little low for those schools. Your ECs are great. Always a lottery for even the best of candidates with 9 out of 10 rejected. Being Hispanic is helpful. Did you apply to a safety?

Gearmom the problem is that Howard U merit scholarship is first served. Although it says its til March 15th, there is a high chance that the op may not get thr scholarship.
Also, if Vlad7777 took class at Poland college, then all of our suggestions arent useful. He will be counted as a transfer student.

Render142 please make your own thread.
Yout Gpa is low for those schools but your extracurricular may be a boost. Dont send in Spanish test. How much can you afford per year?

@paul2752 It is first come first serve but sometimes a scholarship frees up if a student declines the offer. Howard just might be very interested in him. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Is he a transfer? Actually already enrolled in college?

Yeah I know its still worth trying.
However he still needs a solid back up in Poland, since its dangerous to put all eggs in one basket

@gearmom @paul2752 I am not a transfer. I am attending some preparatory course of Polish language, but it doesn’t count as a freshman year anywhere.
No worries here, I have a pretty solid back up in Poland (Warsaw or Wroclaw University of Technology, if you’re interested). I don’t know how wrong everything must go so that I don’t get accepted anywhere.
Although, I would prefer studying in the US, so I think I can apply to another school or two to improve my chances. What do you think of Handrix College? Maybe you know some other school with good CS program and with late deadlines?

*Hendrix college.

Hendrix college offers only merit scholarships, and Hays Memorial scholarship is very competitive(obviously)
https://www.hendrix.edu/admission/international.aspx?id=35098.

I don’t doubt you are a good student but you are too late. The due date for the scholarship is 11/15.
