Is anyone watching April?

I bet there will be a camera pointed at the right spot wherever April chooses to have her baby…

I think she is waiting for May, so her baby giraffe can be named Maya.

I’ve stopped watching. Too much hype meanwhile, as others have noted, baby giraffes in the UK and Toledo have been born. I’ll tune in when something is actually happening. I’m a party pooper.

I am glad I did the text sign up. I check on her from time to time but
a relaxed about the actual birth.
I have thought that she needs to be outside and move around more.

I peeked in from time to time over the weekend and all she’s been doing is eating every time I look.

Eating away, no calf. I have read that increased eating is a sign that birth is near. I would have thought the reverse.

Maybe tomorrow, which happens to be my birthday!

Happy birthday, Consolation.

Have a great day!

Happy birthday consolation!

Not sure how I missed this, but had not heard of the April phenomenon and thought this thread was about some show I had never heard of. Just last night it came up and I realized what this thread was about.

Is a baby giraffe born at a zoo an unheard of event? I remember seeing a baby giraffe at the Bronx zoo some years ago.

I signed up for the text alerts as well. I just keep the feed up on a tab on my computer and check from time to time. There is just something really sweet about watching her and how the handlers deal with her. I’ve always loved giraffe - they’re my second favorite behind pandas. The text alerts show her udder - and she looks ready to blow!

Accredited zoos have baby animals frequently but in a controlled breeding situation where the parents are chosen by conservation experts. In general they will discourage breeding if the genetic line isn’t important or if there is an abundance of a type of animal.

April’s “zoo” is a for profit exhibition. The owner seems quite business savvy and decided to capitalize on the public’s interest with things such as eagle nest cameras,

The owner has said that April’s calf will not remain at his exhibition due to not wanting inbred breeding to occur. It will be sold in the exotic pet trade to an uncertain future.

edited to add: please remember that the owner has no background in conservation or animal husbandry. This is not an accredited zoo.

It doesn’t seem to me we’re all watching because it’s an unusual event. Imho: It’s a distraction from more troubling news stories. It’s a pleasant shared experience. It’s kind of a Zen meditation.

@Consolation - Happy Birthday! April looks very uncomfortable - I hope this baby giraffe is born soon.

@alh - I totally agree - what a great distraction from our troubling news.

I am still here also!
I love this distraction.

Me, too. I find watching April very calming, especially after I’ve had all the political news I can stomach…

I hope this has a happy ending - going on and on and on

Every time I see a bunch of notifications on this thread I think it must be time!!

^ me too !

This is just amazing. We are still here. And then within an hour that we cannot predict the baby will be here.
And then, after awhile, we will all go back to paying attention to the news :(( .

Ollie was just harassing April. It was very stressful. The keeper was having a very hard time separating them.

That baby needs to hurry up!
