I started watching her a couple days ago, and quickly became obsessed. It looked like something was happening. Now it doesn’t. I’m trying to restrain myself from watching.
Thanks bgb, I signed up too!
It also takes the fertilized egg 30 days to implant, and not all eggs get fertilized and not all fertilized eggs implant. They will cycle every 15-17 days. October 2015 was the first coupling that was witnessed so, they went by the earliest date it could have been. Apparently, not all couplings took and not all were witnessed. Cuz, here we are…still waiting.
An excellent lesson in the fallacy of talking about a “moment of conception.” B-)
Also on the “April watch”. Just a quick FYI, “the moment of conception” is when the sperm penetrates the egg’s cell wall, not when the fertilized egg egg is implanted in utero; and with giraffes as we are all learning can take an astonishingly long 30 days.
I am familiar with that definition of “the moment of conception.” But the reality is that conception is a process, including implantation, even in humans.
Poor April, I’m ready to chip in for a first ever giraffe c- section soon ! even vet predicted birth within 48 hours, and deadline passed
Oliver just got very personal smelling her backside. Clearly he senses the baby giraffe.
The two looked as if they were arguing. The made a lot of contact and pushed each other.
Maybe their version of “I hate you. Why did you do this to me?”.
I just received an “April text”! She is off her food and has had contractions all evening.
This is it soon!
She’s been scratching the right side of her neck on the wall all day. And earlier, when Oliver was outside, she stole his hay, or whatever is up in that basket on his side of the partition.
I had read somewhere that they usually don’t deliver during the night due to predators. I don’t know if that follows when in captivity? Poor April looks so uncomfortable.
Is the cam live ? Seems down now
I just received a second text checking to make sure their contact system is working.
Dr. Tim in for his evening eval.
I’m beginning to think that this calf, if female, is going to be named May.
In the video tonight, you can see her abdomen moving vigorously. Her entire body shakes when she gets one of those contractions (or baby kicks) – they are HARD!
This is like Waiting for Godot.
Meanwhile, in the UK:
Cute!!!
And that pretty much sums up the difference between Americans and Brits.
In terms of obsessive pursuits, watching April seems pretty harmless. Maybe we need something else fun to fixate on when this is over.
