İs it Hard to Study

Can anybody tell me is it hard to study on Engineering programs in universities for an international student who starts from the very beginning and knows nothing about engineering??

If you have studied maths and physics till high school or have some qualification like the A levels or IB in them, it won’t be too much of a problem! It also depends on what type of engineering you want to do. For most engineering programs you really should have a strong base in mathematics especially calculus!

i am studying in marine academy in turkey.i am the best at maths in school.before join a university in U.S i will study SAT a year.maybe it will help me.i wanna study in mechanical engineering or electric or Electrical/Communications Engineering…

Hi,
If your math is really good, you should not worry about SAT math section. Regarding SAT verbal, you don
t have to get a 600 or something because you are an intl. student. What I would recommend you to do is to study for TOEFL, especially if you want to get into a good college. any other questions about studying in the US?? just send me a private message in Turkish and I
ll try to help you.

ok thanks denizco

SAT verbal and writing is equally important ( and i mean approx 650 in both is safe ) unless you dont get 800, and i dont mean 790, but 800 in the math section. a perfect score in math section is the only thing that can compensate a bad cr and wr score, not TOEFL. trustme, i know from experience, ur doing the right thing by studying fr it one whole yr…

oh yeah. if you get 650 on the verbal section, you can waive the TOEFL requirement, but could you please tell me how many intl students are capable to get this score while the average score of the American students is 550? Melissarahman, perhaps it is easy for you because you are from an English speaking country, but not for the others.

yeah.denizco is right about that.firstly i must get my english level to advance.i heard about verbal part of SAT.And people always say verbal part is really hard for int. student.

Most of all are from not english speaking countries…
But if you want to go to a strong US college, and I assume you need finaid. Then you need a strong package to compete with other international students… and a 650 is nothing but reasonable

i’m wondering İs it Possible to get high marks from SAT Verbal and Maths with one year education and preparation in U.S ?

well perfectly yes… it is possible… sat verbal and sat writing arent stereotype american classics that need yrs to learn… they are meant for global testtakers and thus the general proficiency in the language along with high analytical abilities can help you crack the S-A-T

SM

man, dont worry too much about the math section… i m not a whiz in math and i managed to get a 780 in it… what you should worry about is the cr section… considering that u have got planty of time i strongly advice you to read as many books and magazines and papers as possible. Also get the barrons and college-board book and start practicing and reviewing your test. Learning 500 words (from barrons book) and practicing tests, i managed to encrease my score for more than 70points in CR (and believe me i didnt study hat hard for cr). the only advice i can give you about the math section is not to do foolish mistakes. i did 2 mistakes in the test where i got a 780 and yet i dont know where i have done them. But i m sure i have made a misscalcultion… nevertheless dont worry too much of the sec if you are that good in math… about WR section, dont put too much emphsize int the sec because, the universities themselves dont put to much emphsizes in it… so read and learn as many words as possible from the barrons list…

denizco…please refer back to what the location under my name says—it says bangladesh–a tiny little asian county, smaller than the size of iowa, situated right beside india and therefore–NOT AN ENGLISH SPEAKING country. in fact, i am in NO WAY connected to any english speaking country except for that cross-breed name my parents really seemed to like when i was born.

and here’s more info to help you pessimism—the first time i gave the SATs, i scored a 540 in the CR section, i was able to get my score all the way upto 650 eventually…HOW?? i didnt sit my lazy ass down and hate myself for not being from an “english speaking” country…instead i gathered a total of 50 sat question papers and ended up solving around 35 i think…
PS. with a hard-earned 2030, i am still waitlisted in 4 places, no acceptances…

so sezgikocak, you see it’s possible…do princeton, kaplan, barron’s, grubers—do everything! and then if ur done with 50…REDO THEM…dont rely on shortcuts!

i still endorse the one year plan…ofcourse if you want this bad enough…good plan

thank you you helped me a lot.i can study from books easily but can i go to any SAT Courses in U.S too?or study with a private teacher?(we have private teachers in our country for every lesson)

ur welcome…
are you planning to go to the US for one year just for the SAT prep? are you going to be asking for financial aid?

for SAT prep and TOEFL prep.my question is:Are there any SAT prep courses available ?and what are courses costs?

I improved from 400 to 610 writing
and CR 500 to 660

It can be done… and I believe college dont like the "I am from non english speaking excuse

İS your score enough for a good school like Purdue or Princeton.i need aid too(about 10000$)cause i have to take good marks.

Purdue is damn damn damn damn easier to get in than Princeton. Purdue offers very few scholarships which is very difficult to get.
