Is It Time to Replace My Ipad?

First let me say that it does not appear to be our router/modem (Verizon), because every other web connecting device in the house is unaffected (the desktop computer I’m typing this message on, my H’s computer, and the ROKU device, for instance). My Ipad, on the other hand, no longer seems capable of connecting to the internet. In the middle of a youtube page retrieval, it suddenly showed an error message, and with every other attempt to connect to the web (using random urls from my favorites list), it said “Safari was unable to find the server”. I probably should have seen this coming, because it’s not like I haven’t been getting hints that something was wrong.

Starting about six weeks ago, my Ipad began to randomly (though infrequently) stop accessing the web in the middle of a web dependent application (or youtube video), and would instead jump directly back to the desktop (I know that’s probably not the accurate term—what I’m referring to is the interface with all your application icons). However, for a few seconds prior to displaying this, it would show a fuzzy image of the background wallpaper, and nothing else. Then this image would become clear and all my app icons be displayed, at which point, the device would sound a little electronic tone. Then, I could go back online, with Safari taking taking me back to the web page I last accessed. I wasn’t overly concerned when it happened only a couple of times a week, but lately, it has been a couple of times a session (of two to three hours duration). Also, that interval of fuzzily displayed wallpaper began lasting a few more seconds before clearing.

Has anything like this happened to you? Mine is an Ipad II, so it’s about three years old. Ergo, no warranty. Should I bite the bullet and buy an Ipad Air, or is it even possible that getting it repaired will be cost effective?

I would not be exaggerating to say that withdrawl symptoms have started, and it hasn’t even been a day since this happened.

:-< I HAVE to have a web functional Ipad! For one thing, all the sites and apps I use to study Korean require an internet connection. Also, my Ipad has a Hangul keyboard I find essential to that end. Any help/insight would be appreciated.

Poet, I know the feeling. I ran to the Apple store last Saturday when my ipad starting freezing on Friday evening. I haven’t been there on a weekend because that store is always so full. The good news, the young man fixed in AsAP.

Best wishes to you.

Did you try rebooting it? I was having trouble with mine (new last august, so not latest but one back), rebooted it and now all is well. Worth a try.

I was embarrassed to say that was problem with mine. I thought I had rebooted my ipad, but had not done it correctly.

lefthandofdog, THANK YOU! I just tried the reboot fix, and IT WORKED! Hallelujah! It took a while to power off (little wheel icon spun around as if trying to decide what to do), but after it did, I let it sit for a few minutes, than turned it back on. Web pages now load like a champ. Such a relief. I groused about the problem to H this morning (before he’d even had his first cup of coffee 8-| ), and he suggested that, since it’s been awhile since it was updated, we should try that before hitting the panic button (too late—panic button had already been repeatedly mashed in manic desperation ;)). I’ll also update it for good measure, but suffice it to say, I’m greatly relieved. You are the bomb dot com!

poetsheart, were you really up at 4:29 AM posting about this problem? If so, it was really bothering you!!

LOL—VeryHappy, Yes! But believe it or night, I’m actually routinely awake at 4:29am. I’m an extreme night owl, so extreme as to actually (ironically) qualify as a “morning person”. Often, I’ll not go to bed until 8:00 or 9:00am. Yes, you read that right, though I’m somewhat embarrassed to admit it. There’s apparently an actual term for my brand of sleep disorder, “Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome”, and sleep scientists say it’s rather hard to totally reverse. In my case, it only seems to have gotten more extreme since the onset of menopause.

I took a muscle relaxer (Flexeril) about an hour ago, so it’s sleep inducing properties should kick in any minute now. I didn’t just take it to help me sleep, though. I also happen to have a rather impressive 30 degree spinal curvature, which often strains the rhomboid muscles in my upper back, causing considerable discomfort. Recently, H also informed me that he thinks I have sleep apnea as well, so I guess it’s time to submit to a sleep study to see if I do.

Hmmm…how does one edit his/her post in the new CC format? I meant to say, “believe it or not”, not “believe it or night” :">

poetsheart, that kind of sleep schedule makes you ideally suited to certain jobs that many other people wouldn’t want!

my iPhone started functioning oddly and I looked it at wondering what was wrong. Then it hit me: after decades working with computers, I was now taking for granted that these are computers. Not long ago, installing a program required inserting disk after disk while restarting each time. Now we expect iPhones and iPads to run on and on and on without ever being restarted. That’s the power of the moment.

I also shut down my router periodically ( im still on the original) so it can cool down.
Seems to help.

poetsheart, You have an hour to edit and the way to do it is to click on the little cog wheel on the top right corner of your post.

Shhhhhh. Poetsheart is sleeping.

Yes!!! Poetsheart, you don’t know how thrilled I am that I gave advice that worked - on a technical problem no less - I’ll be alerting my kids to this. It will go down in family lore as the time mom helped someone on an Internet forum fix her iPad. I should probably log off never to return as it just can’t get any stranger or better than this. Sorry for your frustration, but you’ve really made my day.

And thank you both. It reminded me to reboot mine that was a little bit off. Fixed response time.

Addictive personality? I left office today, changed clothes, and got ready to relax. Lo and behold, no iPad! Must have left it in office, and it is a weekend. Threw on clothes and returned to office. I just could not imagine a night without the iPad. Whatever did we do before? oh, I had laptop nearby.

I have an iPhone, iPad, MacBook Pro, and PC laptop all active right now. Have another old laptop I could pull out in a pinch. And if I got really desperate, I’d pulled out the Kindle ;)

And I have forgotten my iPad in my desk at the high school multiple times. I always go back and get it. Luckily it’s only 5 miles…

I haven’t read all the posts, but my old ipad was a little “off” and would stop in the middle of things as the OP described. My husband was kind enough to get me a new one recently and I LOVE it even more than the old one. I take the old one to the gym and when I go to Drs, things like that, but the new one is much faster and is lighter. What did we do before these things?
