Hi! I’m new here, so I apologize in advance if this is not the designated place. I’m currently applying to an online high school as a freshman, and I’m aiming for the Ivies. The problem is, I’m not taking any honors classes so I’m not sure if the schedule will affect my college admissions. My classes are
English 1
Algebra 2
Biology (or chem or physics)
US History
it would be GREAT if you could help me out and thank you!
Are you an American student?
Your thread may be wrongly tagged (international/South Korea).
Does your online school offer any honors options? Any AP or accelerated classes?
How did you choose that school?
You need 6 or 7 classes.
Any reason why you are doing an online high school?
Foreign language?
Does the online school offer honors classes…or AP classes (maybe not to freshmen, but at some point?).
I attended one year of elementary and middle school at America, than had to come back to Korea but decided to drop out because I wanted to go to college in the US.
I am South Korean, and yes my school does give me honors and AP classes. However I am receiving help from the college admissions counselors here and they told me honors classes are not worth the risk.
My counselor said maybe next year?
Why don’t you try one Honors class?
Honors classes are meant for students aiming for 4-year colleges and as such shouldn’t be “a risk”. Since your English is good, it’d make sense for you to take Honors English. Furthermore, it’s generally possible to start in Honors and after a few weeks if it’s too hard to drop down to regular.
What math would you be taking? Algebra2 or 2H?
If you followed the typical Korean system in middle school you should be taking Geometry or Algebra2 (Honors if you got an A).
Are you a dual citizen (a Korean and US citizen living in Korea)?
Were you getting good grades in Grade8?
My recommendation would be
ENGLISH 1H
Algebra2 (H?)
Biology
World History H or AP Human Geography (*)
Foreign language
Art
(* US History is typically a 10th or 11th grade course)
Is your online school accredited?
Many take 3 - 4 years of foreign language in HS.
Many colleges in the United States expect college applicants to have through level three of a foreign language. Some recommend level four. You need to check your colleges when the time comes to see what they require.
Do you have an in person school option for high school? If yes, that would be a far, far better option for you.
Math, english, history, science, foreign language. You should take the highest rigor that you can manage.
Hey, I’m the same person who’s attending online high school from Korea, and some of the classes changed. I would love your feedback.
English 1 (considering honors)
Biology
Algebra 1 honors (it was supposed to be algebra 2 and geometry, but they won’t let me take a higher course than this and I’m kinda freaking out because all my friends are taking a higher level course)
US history
I really need some feedback on this especially on my math course. The high school said it’s non-negotiable but I’m stressed because I won’t be taking a higher level course.
If a course is non-negotiable then that is what you need to take.
Why did they change it from Algebra2&Geometry?
Also, still no foreign language and you need 6 courses minimum.
Any chance you can change providers?
There are several online HS (state virtual high schools like Florida Virtual HS, private systems…)
