Anyone else have multiple “Holds” in their Student Center about orientation?

I got my SSA notification this morning for Hutton Honors College. I got nothing  kinda bummed since I won’t be able to attend because it’s way too expensive. It’s ok though, I will commit to UIUC  Best of luck to everyone!

Same for my son. Disappointing at best. My son is more aggravated by all of the work he put into it for nothing.

UIUC is an AMAZING university! I hope you love it there!

Had we known they give out so few or that 2400 kids are in the honors college, etc, we wouldn’t have bothered and certainly wouldn’t have asked two people to write letters of recommendation for him. What a freaking waste of our time and especially those who had no skin in the game (the recommenders).

Sorry to your son, I feel the same exact way. We all spent so much time filling out all those essays and getting those rec’s for the application. I also never knew that the scholarship was that competitive until after reading that email.

It really is!! Thank you so much  I’m very excited!

I think we’re all feeling that way. I had no idea it was so competitive and there is no way that he would have gone through the SSA process had we known. It was a lot of work with no return.

D still has not heard. She emailed them last night and they told her this week or next everyone will be notified for Hutton.

This Hutton thing may be the last straw for me regarding IU. They talk about average Honors $$$ awards…but that is obviously the average for the 300 (out of 2400) who get scholarships, not across the whole honors college. Total waste of time.

I agree, up to this point I’d been very impressed but now I’m sort of like why did you make us go through all of this effort for nothing. Not even nothing, an insulting email with MORE links to other scholarships he’d never get. I mean come on.

Curious - since IU seems to string out the various scholarship notifications over several days/weeks, how does one know when an applicant has exhausted all possible SSA opportunities an what you’ve receive so far (if anything) is it?

My daughter eliminated IU, wrongly in my opinion, because she is uncomfortable getting recommendations. She had them for the common app and they should have used them but they wouldn’t. So to me, it’s a dumb reason to eliminate a school, but that’s why she did. If we weren’t going to get money, I guess that worked out.

He got a very long wordy email saying Thanks for Applying, we had 2400 applications for 300 scholarships so you didn’t get anything. Lots of reasons why it was competitive including this criterion which is basically everything you have, but you know, it’s rare anyone gets anything. Please don’t call us to complain. Here are 230 more links for scholarships to apply for that you’ll never get, but keep writing essays for them because you have so much free time!

I assume getting a definitive email that you got nothing means in fact you aren’t getting anything, period.

I think Hutton is on the more competitive side of scholarships at IU, so I wouldn’t say a Hutton denial means you won’t get anything else. But yeah, the amount of essays you have to write compared to the chances you have of winning the scholarships is not a great correlation.

Here’s my thing, when I go onto the Hutton Honors page and I click on “About Us” and “What we Offer” the very first thing they lead with is scholarships.

So if they are indeed rare, why lead with it? Why not focus on the actual things most kids get?

It’s just more bs that we’ve had to jump through hoops over and I’m sorry that irritates me because my son actually did research for his essay and was stressed out over it for days, but figured even if it got him anything it was worth it because maybe IU would be more affordable. Again, pipe dream. Had I know he had a 12.5% chance or less at getting anything I’d have looked at those prompts and said just don’t even waste your time.

And I’m also wondering what’s the point of the honors college then if the biggest thing they trump is scholarships and we all see how well that worked out for most of the students.

I totally agree with you. The application process for scholarships at any university or college is draining. My oldest who graduated from Kelley in 2018 got the least amount of aid from IU. He could’ve gone to Ball St., Hope College or IUPUI for next to nothing. But once he got the scores for DA to Kelley my wife and I relented and let him go to IU. He only got a 12,000 scholarship from IU and didn’t even have a chance to apply for the SSA, as he didn’t qualify. So we had to figure out how to pay the remaining 88,000, LOL. We were fortunate that he got a decent amount of external scholarships and he also received some scholarships while on campus. And after his first year my wife went back to teaching, as we had been a single income family for 12+ years. When he graduated in 2018 he was basically debt free. Fast forward to 2021 and we are in a much better financial situation for our youngest son to start this Fall at IU. The only difference between the two boys is their ACT scores. Oldest a 30 and the youngest a 32. Everything else is almost identical, including their class rankings, oldest 16, youngest 13. My youngest then proceeds to get a 7,000 per year Provost Scholarship and a 2,000 per year Hutton Scholarship. We will never be able to figure out why one got so much more than the other. The way things are going this time around I wouldn’t be surprised if he received even more scholarships from IU. I can definitely share people’s frustrations as we had the same feelings 7 years ago. Paying for college isn’t easy for middle class families and it really isn’t easy for anyone with what it costs. I wish everyone nothing but good luck going forward and that whatever happens it works out for your families and your students.

When you were invited to apply for the SSA, it stated which scholarships you were being considered for. For my son, it was Hutton and College of Arts and Sciences. Those are the only 2 that he was considered for through the SSA. So once you receive word on those, you’re done with SSA awards.
