Good to know, mine is not a good math student (not Kelley) so this may be a smart move for her to protect her gpa and knock one out.
Notes for Finite Math at Ivy tech. Last summer, options were âIn Personâ - not good for OOS. Online class (so you attended via zoom/or the like)⊠and submitted things remotely. OR fully online â basically, take the class via videos and online assignments and do the work on your own schedule. ALL versions come with an advisor/professor that you can email for support. However - if you are at all shaky â maybe attend a class that provides some interaction and the ability to ask questions more often. ORâŠIf you take it at Kelley, there are a lot of supports for study groups, tutoring, campus stuff. As long as your student seeks help - they should be able to get it.
IU like a lot of Big10 and SEC schools have a longer move-in than you might be used to on west coast schools. Thereâs a long âcheck-inâ period where you can move your stuff into the dorms, thereâs a move in schedule and then a welcome week. Itâs not like a west coast school where you might move in over the weekend prior to classes in a few days because of all the people. If Aug 26 is the date of classes youâd be looking at move in closer to Aug 12-16. The older kids tend to check-in on the earlier end, dump their stuff and then come back for classes. The frosh are more compressed.
One of the underdiscussed things for students and parents OOS is what do you do with your stuff during the summer.
Great info thanks, I was holding a hotel but had dates way off.
Last year - My daughter moved in on Aug 14, one week before the start of classes. She did not attend the early âCamp Kelleyâ or âB-Townâ business student optional bonding events - which may have started earlier. There was a new student induction event on the 16thâŠthat we did not stay for⊠but we did make a visit back for a Kelley Student Induction ceremony that took place on Fri Sept 8. That event was nice - but an extra - not a critical. We are OOS, but can drive. Which makes choice easier.
I donât think your dates are WAY off. Iâm sure you could move in 19-21. What you choose is different from what the options might be. Move in 19-21 and it will be probably be 2-3 days into welcome week. IU has a million kids all from somewhere else, it took my daughter about 15 minutes this summer to make friends at a Kelley event. It will not be an issue whenever you show up.
Any idea on when petition decisions will come out now that EA is over?
You are correct. If classes start the 26, move in would be 18-21st.
A couple of notes,
There are many Red Carpet Dates for visiting IU now, Feb. March & April. These visits let you check a presentation in Kelley and other schools at IU. These Red Carpet Events are not the same as the Direct Admit days. This is what we just signed up for, since we are still waiting on the petition
And to comment on move-in, I have a sophomore already at IU. The almost week long the kids have once they have moved in and before classes start is WAY TOO MUCH free time for 17/18 year olds away from home for the first time. Lots of partying and destructive behavior around the dorms is what I witnessed last August while spending several days moving my sophomore into an apartment. My kid even commented as we heard lots of sirens. Not to scare anyone, it probably happens at every school. But a week of free time before classes start is Too Long
I miss college. Party on. It doesnât come back. Sound the sirens.
These are the move in dates from last Fall.
International students move in 2 weeks before classes start, and so do JLLC / Camp Kelley / various IU scholars (Cox, Hudson Holland, Wells etc) because they would have pre-orientation camps around and outside of campus (depends on the program).
All other freshman move in one week before classes start. Orientation week for the whole school is during that week, including the induction ceremony (parents normally invited), program and club fairs, socials and activities etc.
The only students who move in a day or two before classes start are returning students (sophomore/juniors/seniors). The admin staff with the welcome booths wonât be there anymore and if Iâm not wrong you will have to inform IU ahead of time that you are missing parts of welcome week
With all due respect Inspiro.
Freshman orientation is during the summer. Itâs a two day process, dates you choose btw end of June and August. This includes many lectures and class sign ups.
Freshman move into the dorms about a week before classes start. There are some activities, but itâs mostly Free time. Unless your kid happens to be in a very specialized honors program or summer start or something like that. My kid found the gym, made new friends and played a ton of pickup hoops. Was actually thrilled and relieved when classes started.
My kid is now a sophomore and last August, while moving into an apartment off campus we witnessed absolute craziness going on near the Northwest Dorms. Police were there every night breaking up massive groups of kids in packs. There were booze bottles all over the place. And reported police intervention for kids climbing light poles and dorm overhangs. Emergency room visits. One entire week is way too much time for these kids to move in before classes start. Itâs a free for all.
Totally get your point Jesse and Iâm not here to start a fight either.
The New Student Orientation (NSO) is indeed in June/July where kids tour the school and register for fall classes. Rather, the first week before classes is called âWelcome Weekâ, âFreshman Weekâ or something to that effect, and i acknowledge that I misspoke calling it âOrientationâ.
I am not here to debate the pros/cons of early move-in, but rather wanted to provide a purely factual post on last fallâs move-in. It is, of course, up to every parent and student to decide what is best for them.
Acknowledged! Iâm just saying the welcome week is kindof a mess. There are very few activities that are organized. And this does not lead to good outcomes for kids away from home for the first time.
I have a current sophomore who is loving IU. And a second one just admitted, and waiting on her petition. We obviously love the school but the declared welcome week is a mess.
Sooo frosh move in is probably a little more than a week before classes?
Look forward to petition notices and DA days coming up. Every year itâs record numbers of applicants and hard to get admitted and every year it works out. Trust the Process.
Sorry if I missed this but do you work for IU?
My son applied test optional. Has high GPA and otherwise a strong candidate for Kelley. He received the Deanâs scholarship. And was sent an email telling him that he is a good candidate for Kelley and should consider submitting a petition. He also received an email inviting him to apply for the selective scholarship. This all looks very promising but Iâm still really nervous. This is his top choice but I do t want him to be disappointed if he doesnât get direct admit. Any insight from others who may have also received an email encouraging them to petition? He submitted his petition on 12/21. This waiting is killing is.
College admissions is about realism from State schools and not finding clues in what was sent. Itâs a cold numbers game.
Deanâs is based entirely on the GPA.
The good candidate email is not personalized whatsoever by seeing your application and is IU wanting everyone listing business to fill out a petition because if you donât fill it out you probably donât attend IU.
SSA is based on the GPA and some other factors and is the only thing I would find promising personally.
Not meant to discourage just reality. The wait will probably be 45 days at least. The odds of being invited to SSA and not admitted to Kelley are pretty low. The other factors have zero correlation to Kelley admission. Being a boy doesnât help in current Kelley climate.
Hello, do you mean the wait from today is at least 45 days for everyone? No matter the date they submitted their petition?
Also Iâve heard some threads talking about how women seem to have an upper hand in the petition process because of Kelleyâs gender distributionâŠwould you say thatâs still accurate and applied to today?
Yes that is exactly what I mean.
