IU Kelley Petition Tracker 2024

Yep, the SAT/ACT requirement for California is non-existent for all CA public universities (9 UC’s and all 23 State Schools) - they will not be requiring them ever again. The UC’s are looking into their own test but I imagine that’s years away. And with most universities “test optional” right now there just wasn’t a push to take a standardized test. My son got into 4 business schools so far, so it doesn’t seem to be a hindrance not having a standardized test score to back up his gpa; but maybe Kelley will prove otherwise… I’m glad this is my last kiddo going through this process lol I think future years are just going to get even more chaotic with the application process for all schools. (And the surging costs!)

I realize this is getting off-topic… But do California public school kids take any standardized tests during their four years? In Illinois, our yearly standardized test requirement is an SAT product. PSAT 9/10, SAT. (Years ago it was an ACT product.) So almost everyone from an Illinois public school has to have an SAT score of some sort (except, of course, when the testing requirement was temporarily suspended by the state). And because of the state requirement, it’s paid for by the state and taken during school time. So there’s no additional burden on a student to schedule or pay for a test. It seems to me that if colleges were concerned about that burden on students, they could just take whatever standardized test score a state uses in evaluating its own students. (Leaving aside all the other issues with testing, just addressing the issue of test access here.)

California does not require an SAT/ACT test in HS (they do take other standardized tests like CAASPP). 25% of 2023 grads took an SAT, 4% an ACT.

There are still relatively few testing seats in California (on the entire west coast really). I just read a new thread from this week that said there are no seats within 4 hours of SF for the rest of this school year (and most of those seats sell out within hours of registration opening.) Many HS admin and counselors don’t see value in their students taking an SAT or ACT test, so they don’t run them. Some of recent CC threads on testing and the college admissions process have talked about these issues.

This lack of testing focus in CA (and other places) can disadvantage students who may want to consider schools that require tests like IU Kelley for direct admit or for certain merit scholarships, etc.

That was my point – – if California already has a standardized test, I’m surprised schools don’t look at that. Most states use a nationwide standardized test, but for those states that don’t, it seems that it would be fairly easy for a college to, for example, take a 95% on a California standardized test in lieu of a 95% on an SAT (which is roughly the Kelley cut off). A student that didn’t make that 95% cut off could still petition, but a student with a standardized test score above 95% from California could submit that to score and be a direct admit. Seems like a win for everyone.

Yes, I don’t know all the issues as to why colleges don’t accept CAASPP to satisfy testing requirements. I expect it has to do with being validated, but not sure @hebegebe do you know?

Other states have other tests too, the only other nationally available one I know that some colleges accept is CLT https://www.cltexam.com/

My knowledge of CAASPP is close to zero, but I don’t think it’s even used in California for admission purposes.

Regarding whether other colleges like IU should accept it, it would work if it was only California. But I think that opens the door for any state wanting their own special test to be used, which becomes unwieldy very quickly.

I hope anyone attending DA days this weekend is willing to share their experiences for the betterment of others.

Spring break is I believe the 9th for IU and unlikely to see any decisions 9-18th as a result. Not that admissions is on vacation but it’s a high time students visit the campus and not the ideal time to release a decision. Most likely going to happen by Mar 8 or not until March 20+.

They are not just sitting on apps - they are trying to figure out yield from admitted already. Fri/Sat is the last data point on that from the auto-admits. Good luck to all.

We are headed to Kelley DA tomorrow! My daughter got in off the petition in January. What is the main question everyone has? Timing of the petition reviews being released? I’m happy to ask questions if there’s anything else specific!

When did she apply for the petition?

Nov. 6. Right after her application was submitted. Met the gpa but 1320 SAT

What day did they release her decision and was it just through email?

She got an email from Kelley School of Business on Jan. 23. She has since gotten hard mail, postcards, acceptance letter from Kelley.

Interesting, my son exceeded GPA threshold, scored 1330 on the SAT and petitioned very early (shortly after applying in the Fall). He has not heard anything regarding Kelley yet…

Many are in the same boat. Lets hope we hear soon. My son has exceeded GPA and SAT threshold, but had to petition due to attending 2 different High Schools. He has submitted his review request on 30-Nov and we have not yet heard back. We have booked for Red Carpet in last week of March and hoping we know by then as he does not want to attend IU, unless he has DA into Kelley.

The average SAT for Kelley last year was 1447 or 32/33 ACT. That’s right there with Notre Dame, higher than Georgetown and UVA b-schools. It is not an easy petition admit. Date of petition submission has nothing to do with when you will hear. Based on another poster’s statement of apps - Kelley had 30% more apps this year than in 2023. There are plenty of very high stat petitions which will be wait-listed or denied. The average admission percentage is skewed by the 100% direct auto admit.

I wish everyone luck. If granted admission you will have earned it. And if not - it’s a numbers game because of the auto-admit not the quality of the petition.

Let me know if anyone has specific questions. I’m happy to ask questions this weekend

Anyone know when Review Requests will be processed by Kelly. We are in the GPA route (no SAT) and submitted Review Request in early Jan.

Don’t disagree that test scores for less advantaged, lower resourced students should be included. Agree that SAT/ACT should be used as an indicator. With national avg for ACT at an all-time low (~19) for class of 2024, i have no problem with a 24, 26, 28 being strongly considered over a 30+ score from an advantaged student, however, I do think it makes sense to ensure the lower score is significantly above their school’s average ACT. To me, this indicates the student did more with less while also providing an indicator that they can handle the difficulty of the college curriculum. Clearly, an opinion although not a research based opinion.

Same applied in early Jan with GPA 5.15 W and SAT 1360.

Last chance. I’m gonna be at Kelley DA day all day tomorrow, no questions for them?!
