Agreed, did petition on 9/19, however I still will be doing the pre-business route if they deny my petition. I’ve been taking classes with Ivy Tech since sophomore yr so I am hoping some credits will transfer, and I’ll be coming to Bloom in the summer as a Groups Scholars student. Overall I believe it’s been as stressful on the AOs as it has been for us.
My DS is patiently waiting, only reason he did not get DA is due to a summer course he did after the Junior year that went as a separate high school gpa tranascript. With each passing day his confidence is going down. 4.2W(3.8 UW) and 1530 SAT with very good EC’s. He has an offer from Penn State Smeal but have to do summer start. LEAP summer signup starts from March 11th and we have to pay the deposit to sign up for Leap courses. I am told some of the classes fills up as soon as the registration opens up. We are in a tough situation and not sure if Kelley review (accept or deny) will come before then. I am not sure if we should pay the deposit at Penn State and withdraw later.
Is he considering attending IU if he doesn’t get Kelley and try to get in via standard admission?
Smeal isn’t direct admit either (it’s technically pre-major)…there are requirements (GPA, classes) to declare the various majors: https://ugstudents.smeal.psu.edu/academics-advising/get-into-a-smeal-major
This is shocking to me for a 1530/4.2 at Penn State??
Caveats: I have no inside info for IU/Kelley. However, I have spent a ton of time digging into data and reading these message boards.
Here is what I predict:
(A) You will not hear before March 11. My reasons are as follows:
(1) Ivy Day is 2 weeks later, and many of the top DAs based on stats are waiting to hear from Ivys or similar. Kelley needs to get a handle on how many of those kids are coming.
(2) I believe I read that on April 1st the dates for New Student Orientation will go live. To sign up for a NSO date you must have made an enrollment deposit. I believe this is the first trigger event for deposits. There has been no reason to deposit before now.
(3) With FAFSA issues, everything is going to happen later than originally predicted.
(B) I predict that your son will eventually be admitted. His stats are strong compared to the others that are waiting on petition. Sure Kelley is trying to build a diverse class, but it also loves high stats. Your son would be able to do very well at Kelley, based on his record to date. However, he might not be admitted until the summer, which is tricky with a summer start elsewhere.
If I were in your position … I would pay the PSU deposit and get the best possible LEAP classes. I would start trying to love Smeal. How much is the deposit and when do summer classes start?
Does anyone know how late Kelley makes offers? Am I wrong that it is possible to be given a spot over the summer? Is there a time at which offers stop?
Smeal is highly competitive. Also, they use the unweighted GPA so would need to know what that is. Summer start is an incredible program!!
No he does not want to attend if its not Direct Admit. I told him he can get into Kelley later but for some reason he does not want to go that route.
I do not understand your comment. He is waiting on couple other regular decisions but its very tough there. He goes to a very competitive PA public school.
Seems if he’s willing to take the risk at Smeal to get into a major, it would be no different at IU for Kelley entry, maybe even easier depending on the major he wants (for example Smeal finance requires a 3.5 GPA for entry.)
I do understand we are talking about teenager though! Good luck to him (and you).
Yes this is what we are leaning towards. I am not sure how much is the deposit and we are willing to put it in even if its not refundable. Summer session starts on Jun 26th.
We are also instate and the cost will be about half of Kelley. I read in last year petition tracker that one of the kid got rejected who got the same Dean scholarship money $6k as my son. Though he likes Kelley more than SMEAL, I am sure he will do well wherever he goes.
Forgot to respond to your 2nd question, I did not know about pre-major. His interest is in Finance and he know he need to score 3.5GPA to get into Finance major.
Yes direct admit to Smeal is highly competitive. His UW is 3.8, I do not know what is the general cutoff. The more we read about summer start the more we like it. Only issue is we had a vacation planned sometime back and will be back 2 days before the summer session starts. He will miss out spending time with friends after the senior year
IU Kelley standard admission is a lower hurdle than going from pre-business Smeal to declaring a finance major. Obviously his choice, just make sure he has all the relevant info. Standard Admission 2023 Criteria | Bachelor's Degree in Business | Indiana Kelley
One other reason not sure if its true, somewhere we read that the workshops offered at Kelley(IBW, IBM and others) are available only for DA students and you have to apply in Sophomore year. If he does not have a chance to get into these clubs offered at Kelley but has a shot at NLF, LLC or AMG in Penn State he would like to take that chance.
Thanks for your support.
These are the things he should be researching, by contacting the appropriate folks at each school (they could be in the career advising side or maybe the academic side, he just has to do some legwork). It’s difficult to make a decision without all the facts, which obviously could lead to a suboptimal decision. Big picture, I expect the top business clubs at each school are competitive to get into, don’t know about the workshops.
It’s a compliment to your son. A 1530 is an amazing score as is his GPA, and would qualify him for many top schools as a direct admit.
Yes we are trying to get that information about chances for non kelley students to get into the workshops.
Yes agreed the clubs and workshops are all highly competitive. His concern is he should at least have a chance to compete.
Everything I have heard about the summer start is great!
And the fact that PSU is 1/2 the price of Kelley … lots to love about that!
Waiting on Kelley petition therapy is hard.
Kelley historically uses a wait list to provide answers to petitions in early-ish March so those University admitted applicants attend Red Carpet Days and enroll in housing/NSO etc…
Kelley has not historically waited for Ivy days/other rejection season decisions on petitions. They use those dates for wait list admits.
FAFSA has pushed a lot back as noted correctly, not just for Kelley.
The question this year is will Kelley use a wait list or just wait until near 4/15 and admit/deny with very small wait list.
Kelley said 4/15 so there’s nothing to be worried about on 3/6 except why the Kelley algorithm accepted the limited petitions it did in Late/Jan-Early/Feb and not others.
Odds of petition acceptance based purely on number of apps is really low. 4.5GPA 5.9 GPA whatever. Everyone should have a backup plan.
Can you still get into clubs/workshops as a standard admit? If you take the same freshman classes as DAs I don’t see why not. Various reasons students may or may not get DA doesn’t necessarily mean one is smarter than the other. 3.8 weighted gpa/1370 sat isn’t going to be any better than a test optional 4.5 weighted gpa.
