This is what we are interested in finding out too. I will try to call and find it from the admissions office but most of the time we are not able to get hold of them.
Of course you can do all of that as a standard admit. You are going to come in a year later so connections will be fewer. But also you might get into none of those as a direct admit. Making connections, being outgoing, joining activities, doing well in classes are the issue.
I donāt mean this poorly but what do you expect Admissions to tell you on this? Call a current Kelley club or student.
Called Kelley and they confirmed he cannot apply to the workshops until he gets into Kelley. Most clubs are open to standard admit. This is what we are worried about as he will be at a huge disadvantage compared to DA students.
Kelley also said that its not true most of the spots are filled. I tried to find approximately how much more percentage of kids appeal request can be accepted but no luck.
More than the clubs he is very interested on the workshops. We will try to reach out the current students/clubs.
Yes agreed making connections, joining activities and doing well in classes are important.
At this point only those who have enrolled and paid a deposit have filled a spot. That cannot be many.
Last year one student got rejected with very high GPA.
@Sat_mcsd1 You probably know this already, but at PSU, if your son gets a 3.5 GPA and meets the other entrance to major requirements, he will definitely get into finance. The other Smeal majors have lower GPA requirements. It is not a competitive process to get into a major; everyone who meets the requirements gets in.

Yes. Thanks for sharing!
Hello there! because you are an admissions expert can I ask you a question concerning another university?
My son is interested in this or the Capital Markets workshop.
Under who can apply, I read this
First-year students can sign up for an independent self-guided Canvas module to cover BUS F-255 content before sitting for a placement exam to be eligible to enroll in BUS-F 210: Investment Banking. A link to register for the placement exam coming soon.
Sure, I can try to help. Sending you a PMā¦
All ~ we attended DA days last weekend. The IU Auditorium was full for the morning session with parents and kids. The IU Auditorium holds 3,200. Program was good/great as others have said. My daughter is still btw. IU and a much smaller business school on the east coast with a great reputation, just a different feel overall.
I thought it interesting that Kelleyās program for the weekend continually mentioned how there are many opportunities for the big Kelley environment to feel smaller once kids start to engage in clubs, workshops and particular classes (including smaller study abroad opportunities). They actually were stressing this! I liked that!
I think once they are either a DA or offered a Kelley spot after freshman year they are able to apply to the workshops being spoken about. The workshops are all listed in the IU Kelley pages if you do some searching. They all have prerequisite classes ~ so donāt get stressed about freshman year!!
The coolest parts of the weekend were the breakout sessions where students got a real class Experience with a professor in a group of 25 kids. My daughter loved it!
And parents (if they signed up) got a real class experience with an amazing/engaging/inspiring Business Ethics professor. He is actually a Dean in Kelley. He had parents raising hands, debating with each other, solving ethics problems. That room held about 300, but actually didnāt feel too big. But, of course the professor was amazing and made it feel smaller than it was.
We lucked out that I have a sophomore (not business) and my daughter got to chat with his 2 Kelley roommates before we flew home. One a direct admit from Chicago. Said Kelley was a reach for him. Heās happy! And in a workshop class. In a fraternity and managing it all.
Other roommate is from New York, not a DA, but got in as a sophomore. Also happy! In a fraternity. Living his best life! We laughed when he said some kids go to class in a āsuitā like they think they are āall thatā and some kids go in pjs and sweat pants. It made it feel real and normal to us.
Good luck to all! Bloomington is amazing and a very special place. If youāre on the fence ~ Iād say go for it even if not a da. It can be done! Even in pajamas
Would love to know the answer to this. S24 in same boat. Meets all the criteria, but happened to attend two HS. Had been thinking it would be no problem, but now sounds like maybe there wonāt be enough room at the inn?
So it seems to me that the question is ⦠can a non-DA take all the I-core 1st year pre-reqs? If yes, then the student takes those classes, petitions into Kelley and is in a position to apply in the Fall of sophomore year (the same as any DA). If the student has not earned the requisite grades to get into Kelley, then the student likely didnāt have the GPA for the workshop anyway.
It is my understanding that many DAs do not get into workshops. The workshops are VERY selective. Do not underestimate the competition!! All the kids are smart. And most have a lot of drive and ambition. Certainly encourage kids to work towards a workshop spot. But setting it up as the only goal ā or holding it out as the only path to a certain job/life ā is going to really increase stress.
And for those of you with finance kids who are driven to make the most $ possible ⦠note there is a new workshop for private equity! It list a 3.85 as the required GPA. Which means IB will now be a fall back option for some kids.
Most Kelley standard admits apply second semester of freshman year, for the following Fall entry:
Most IU students apply for standard admissions during the spring semester of their first year and receive notification about their admission decision in June.
Here are the requirements for standard admission, thereās also a link to a helpful webinar towards the bottom of the page:
Agree that many clubs and the workshops are highly competitive. Clubs and workshops arenāt required to pursue internships/jobs in whatever area a student wants to though.
Same here. Thought that this would the first set of admits that they would clear. But looks like they may need to be selective even for the pool of students who meet the GGPA and SAT criteria, but have attended separate HS.
Donāt be fooled. I can confirm that getting into Kelley clubs is VERY hard and VERY selective. Almost impossible. I have a current Kelley student that has an exceptional gpa, outgoing, personable, involved in lots during high school.
Tried freshman year AND sophomore year to get into Kelley clubs and it did not work out. A confidence killer. As was the same with most of their friends.
Perhaps Iām oversimplifying here so please forgive meā¦there are two types of finance majors at Kelley: those in workshops and those who arenāt.
For the latter group, how do recruiters from investment/securities industry view these potential candidates? Can the non-workshop students even get interviews when the time comes?
Thatās a good question.
@catcherinthetoast Can you comment on how IB recruiting works wrt to these types of issues? I am sure recruiters know that IB club and workshops and the like are highly competitive and holistic admission (though not always holistic) at many schoolsā¦does that impact a studentās ability to potentially work in IB? Given holistic admission to many of these types of activities, a student could still have a high GPA/strong profile and credentials and not gain admission to these clubs.
Who could possibly answer these questions other than in generality.
Can someone get an interview if not in a specific workshop - of course they can. Is it likely or easy? Certainly not. Especially the more selective and geographically farther away the recruiter. Reminds me of being at Kelley this summer with endless questions wanting guarantees of if I go there will I receive a top paying job. Welcome to the real world.
Finance at least in the C/O 2025 is 81% male so itās gonna be a little more competitive as a male in finance because the clubs and groups will want some measure of diversity.
Kelley receiving the top satisfaction score in P&Q for experience is a pretty good indicator that students find their experience worthwhile. Especially compared to most other top schools. How is there any stat that matters more than that?
Kids will face adversity, many of them for the very first time. Often unsure what to do without parents intervening. Sometimes adversity is random and not fair. Sometimes not being accepted into certain groups is because thatās actually not you as much as you want to see yourself in that group. And you find your path and people elsewhere.
Canāt worry about what you cannot control.
