Their loss, not yours! All the best
I do not know the percentage nor does IU because if you donât have the grades itâs not a denial like you applied, you just do not meet the criteria to go from pre-biz to biz school. A lot is written about Finite Math but the reality is college is hard for some students maybe for high school grade inflation expectations, independence, homesickness, studying incorrectly or inefficient. Only you know your own student.
As for a gamble? It is nonsense you cannot accomplish your goals outside of Kelley. IU is a great University. Ohio state is a great university. You donât need to be Biz-Finance or whatever to make it. Businesses donât value those few classes over math or international studies or some other degree that much - just take those classes if you can get a spot. Like I will take this Finance student here over the one who understands international markets and 3 languages? Come on. Kelley sells Kelley but itâs far from the only path.
Rejections of petitions meeting the DA requirements feels like a denial based on a technicality (2 transcripts or school doesnât calculate GPA). One parent here said their DA kid went to 2 hs but the 2nd hs merged all the grades with the previous hs on one transcript and calculated one GPA so they didnât have to go through petition process.
Every school has their institutional priorities - I guess Kelley likes the ease of their process in having most of the students be selected by the computer (AO info session told us admit decided by the computer based on GPA & standardized test) rather than staffing AO appropriately to holistically review 26K applications which is understandably a huge task and may be an unnecessary investment of resources. Itâs worked for them so far.
The positive is Kelley has a very straightforward path to admission as a frosh. And maybe some of this is being on the West Coast where 4 year biz school doesnât really exist - but thatâs a fine pathway solution to me for all of these technicalities they choose. I get emotionally being denied with high stats but welcome to computer science or other top 10 biz schools or engineering majors. Many many high stat kids get denied what they want and they are just fine.
I have a much bigger problem with Kelley admissions staff seemingly not knowing their own stats on petition admission. Maybe they do mean 65% with standard admit pathway counted into that but itâs not that difficult to be really clear that most petitions are initially denied/waitlisted for the incoming frosh. Because they absolutely do act like itâs no big deal to petition. Itâs also up to parents I guess to know the actual stats - plenty argued with me on here on that.
Agreed. I think the schoolâs are having trouble adjusting to the current state of affairs. My understanding is this year and next year are GIANT applicant pools. After that, thereâs a lull (which corresponds to fewer people having kids during the economic downturn).
We do feel blindsided by Kelleyâit seemed pretty clear, âhit these marks, and youâre inâ and apparently they got so many applicants that they had to move the goalposts.
Will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.
Looks like most got the results about their appeal but we did not get any updates. Is anyone else in similar boat? After seeing results on appeal for high stat kids similar to my son I assume we will get denied/waitlisted too but it will be nice to know early to plan things. I am still not sure why we did not get the update while most here got something. Does essays come into play? What about location? We are from PA and noticed mid atlantic has 4% which is lesser than other parts? Not sure if location even plays any part in this? Does anyone have insight on this?
Being a boy looks to be a disadvantage but hoping to hear some good news. Hopefully we will hear something back soon.
This process has been disappointing. We went in thinking that DS should be in since DS has all the stats to make the cut, but the only reason for petition was 2 HS (btw, his second HS did translate his first HS grades and included them in the final transcript). Over time, we realized that this process is not rolling and also that 2 HS was not a technicality to review for admission. It has been a long 5 months since the petition was submitted and to know at the end you are waitlisted, just because you moved cities in between HS is frustrating. One thing this did do to us, is rethink our parameters of what school he wants to go to and what matters really and make a decision based on the same.
We havenât heard anything either. We live in Indiana. DS will be going to IU pre-biz and try again next year if he isnât admitted as a freshman. Still hope we hear one way sooner rather than later!
Sorry to hear and Good luck to us. We are also considering standard admit but DS have a strong feeling that it will put him at disadvantage in creating network with Kelley seniors until he gets into Kelley. I read Kelley kids have their own dorm. Does anyone else have any comments on this? Both parents did not go to college here, does living in a different dorm put you in disadvantage to develop networking?
I think and agree it all comes does to my son on how he develop his network but any suggestions/comments will be helpful. What other disadvantages are there for standard admits? We are not too worried about the grades.
My DS has several friends who are juniors (both were admitted through the petition process). Neither lived in the Kelley learning center dorms. Iâm sure itâs great, I just donât have any specific information about living there. Even if my son somehow gets through on petition, heâll be living in the Northwest Neighborhood freshman year. Heâs grown up going to every IU football home game and most bball gamesâŠheâs looking forward to experiencing it as an IU student!
I mean this literally and respectfully - you are way over analyzing this. A direct admit probably has a few scholarship opps being in Kelley but itâs really unlikely to receive any and a few I guess networking options but not materially. You take the same courses who would know someone is a direct admit vs looking to be accepted?
The only issue is what if you do not get in as to a plan. If you have the skills and interest to network with a bunch of seniors who couldnât care less about you as a direct admit you can do that as standard admit.
@Sat_mcsd1 Kelley kids do not have their own dorm. The JLLC is something you choose to apply for or not. Itâs a few floors/hallways in McNutt dorm in the northwest neighborhood. Itâs the largest dorm on campus. My sophomore son lived there, heâs not Kelley. Itâs a huge mix of freshman ~ which is good!
Agree that the process seems a lot more opaque than we thought it was back in November predecessor when he got in to IU but not Kelley despite meeting ACT and GPA requirements.
Two HS. Crazy.
My daughter is a current DA Kelley freshman, and she lives in McNutt. She chose NOT to join the LLC, and she has met many âpre-Kelleyâ students (i.e. Standard Admit). They all take the same classes, and the only difference is that the pre-Kelley students must get a B in all of their classes, so there is a bit more stress in the system. From what she told me, the pre-Kelley kids know this going in and if they have struggled in thier freshman year, they are looking at continuing with majors outside of Kelley. There are many majors in other IU schools that are similar to business, and you can minor in Kelley without actually having to be a âformalâ Kelley student.
I am concerned they will move the goalpost for the Fall 2025 SA admits. Do you know if theyâd do that? Meaning move the B requirement to maybe a B+ or something like that.
My son did email admissions this morning thanking them for reviewing his appeal and confirming he understands the SA requirements for his class. Hopefully he hears back. He doesnât want any surprises. If he makes the decision to go pre-business, he wants confirmation out of this gate on what it takes to get in SA.
I think this is very smart and would want this assurance as well. The lack of clarity, the moving of the goal posts, and the total lack of communciation from Kelley throughout this process has been awful. Frankly, if my second daughter had not gotten DA to Kelley, we would be looking at her other DA options, of which she had many. We are not risk takers, and I would not necessarily trust that the goal posts would remain unmoved.
Exactly! That is why he emailed for confirmation of what we read on the website. What if the requirements page is outdated as the appeal admissions information was? That would be incredibly WRONG! Iâd love it documented too in case they move the goalpost and we want to protest. This is a lot of money to put on the line to not have transparency upfront and documented.
Doesnât mean they wonât move it anyway. All knowledge is good. You cannot rely on anything a college says - you need a backup plan. All they will say now is those are the standards.
Good news is the numbers going into standard admit this year are not material to necessitate changes. It seems like a lot on here, but it is not. Nothing about this year is different from last year or the year before. And many on the waitlist will get admitted direct in late April or May. It should not have been one second of surprise that almost all petitions were denied.
IMO, IU (and by extension, Kelley), should do away with the petition process altogether. UIUC and Wisconsin, among others, donât do this. There is no rolling admissionâŠeveryone gets their notice of admittance, denial or weightlist on the same day in January. You know right then and there whether youâve been admitted as direct entry to their business school or whether you have been accepted into your 2nd choice major (if you listed one). Itâs much more straight foward. This entire admissions cycle for IU/Kelley this year has been absurd.
This is a good point ⊠there are a lot of Kelley-adjacent majors. For example sports mgmt is outside Kelley. So one could do a do a sports mgmt major and a Kelley minor in finance or marketing. Or you could go a different way and do a major in science/tech and a minor in finance and go into a finance role at a science/tech company or doing equity research in that sector. Lots of different pathways! And remember most jobs are going to teach you what they want you to know when you get there!
