You should definitely “move on” as its April 11th and they said they will provide all answers by April 14. No reason to wait those 3 days after waiting 6 months…
Hi. So recently I was waitlisted for Direct Admission. But I realized in my file the admissions team was not able to see a very serious health condition that severely affected my gpa and performance as a student. How much would this circumstance mean to the Kelley Admissions Team and would it help my chances to be accepted for Direct Admission?
Waitlist status suggests they have defined you as being worthy of DA. However - at present it is about space in the program. I’m not sure how the waitlist will be prioritized or how mobile it would be. This is very late in the process for nuancing your story. You could attempt to contact them - but clearly the rest of your application was high quality. Do whatever you think is best - and best of luck with your outcome.
I watched a virtual admitted students day Monday. They said all waitlists in Kelley will be notified by May 10.
They also commented that it is a sure thing to get into Kelley after a freshman year of ‘pre-business’ if you have a B in every class. If you get any B-, you will most likely not get into Kelley. They were very positive about other options at IU and also minors are available in business!!
I contacted them and they said they added my information to my file and would take it into consideration! hopefully this is a good sign as it’d be a big burden off my shoulders to be a da
There is literally no comparison between Vanderbilt and Kelley. None whatsoever. Go to Vanderbilt.
Watched standard admit webinar last night and B- will not likely prevent a student from being admitted into Kelley. With a B-, you would have to go through the Standard admit review process, however, in 2023 they said “approximately 1,000 completed the standard admit application process, roughly 12% or 120 kids were automatically admitted and approximately 430 were admitted through the standard admit review process”. Therefore, 430 kids didn’t have all Bs and above in every class taken during their 1st year on campus. They did say more than 1 B- or below is an automatic rejection for standard admission. They stated that each year they have 500-600 spots reserved for standard admits and that number is not changing for 2024.
Wow, so …
All Bs or better = 100% admit
1 B- or worse = about 50% admit
More than 1 B- or worse = 0% admit
I don’t necessarily love the process, but I give Kelley credit for giving clear info on parameters and odds of admission.
(I took the 1,000 kids going into the process, subtracted 120 auto admits based on grades, to get 880 going into the review process. Divided 430 by 880 to get 48.86%.)
If only 12% of kids get B’s or better–that is really low, no? So 88% of kids are biting their nails as they go thru a review and only half of them get good news. This is a more risky path than I thought. Am I thinking this thru right?
That DOES seem like a low number to be getting Bs or above. I don’t know if the public has access to the grade curve info. Once your student commits to IU, they will have access to that info and can see which class(es) are causing the problem. If it was finite, that is no longer a problem for this year’s class (since it won’t be required).
50% acceptance of kids who need the review is actually a higher number than I was expecting. But I was also imagining more than 12% were auto-admits.
by majority do u think u have any estimate on how many the larger pool of kids could be? and like about how many would get into kelley from it
As an additional point of comparison, we were recently at MSU Broad admitted student day. They said the secondary process admit rate to business was 34-54% over the past 2 years (I think kids can petition after any semester they take prereqs). So 50% and IU isn’t out of line with that.
seems like its best to go to a school that let you into the b school as a direct admit then, and not take a risk with the two-gate hurdle schools. sounds stressful and 50-50 shot. Pretty bad odds.
does this mean the standard admit route is even more risky than thought going into next year?
Wow! Will be interesting to see if they adjust their direct admit requirements next year.
They’ve needed to do that for a couple of years, I bet they wish they changed things before this cycle!!
That’s a great question! And right now no one can answer it. It depends how many of the kids that were admitted to pre-business decide to enroll at IU, take all the pre reqs and try for standard admission. However, in my opnion, the greatest risk factor is not the number of kids going into the standard admit process, it is whether your kid can get Bs or better.
Bs or better = 100% admission rate. Getting one B- drops a kid to a 50% admission rate. So even if more kids are in the pipeline and that one B- rate drops to, hypotethically 40%, the big risk is not the drop from 50% to 40%, its the drop from 100% to 50% (or 40%).
I agree…but assuming a growing class, I would be concerned about access to clubs, workshops, etc. Hard to handicap that…but if the class were to grow to 2250 (or whatever) access could become a bigger issue than it already is there. Time will tell.
I believe there was a quote in the article that said the class would NOT be getting any bigger. Because they were “a high touch environment.“
