James Madison University Early Action for Fall 2024 Admissions

What a fun way to spend MLK day…

Good luck to everyone. 2 years ago, my daughter received EA acceptance on 1-13. She is now a sophomore and loves it. Son may possibly join her if he gets in.

Seems like with no notice so far this week, we’re looking at high odds that it happens next week given what others have posted about release dates in recent years.

My guess is either tomorrow (because they like the Tuesday/Thursday notification thing) Or 1/16

Seems they would’ve put a notice out by now if it’s going to be tomorrow but what do I know?

I called today and they said mid to late January which was no help! Praying for tomorrow

Us too!! Not sure why it is so hard to just give a date…

Maybe hard to provide a date because they don’t have the decisions completed yet. I remember a piece on NPR about a decade ago (was probably two decades given how fast the years go by) where the reporter spent weeks with the admissions committee at a highly selective liberal arts college. They spent many hours on the last couple dozen selections because they had hundreds of kids that they wanted to admit but only very few spots for them, so they debated forever. I think they finally used a random number generator for the last dozen or so. The lesson was this game is so competitive that if you don’t get in but your classmate who seems no more qualified does, maybe they wanted you both but had to pick a name out of a hat.

I am thinking that they had a lot apply for this round. It has never been late January so I’m still hopeful for today or next Tuesday.

I agree. I expect we will hear about record applications given the football team success. I hope they were ready for an increase and can release the decisions soon.

I’m so nervous. My daughter is anxiously awaiting–JMU is her top choice by a mile. We check the portal every hour! My son is currently a freshman, and loving it. Does anyone know if they give a little bump to kids who have siblings at the school? Her credentials aren’t quite as strong as his, but she did everything she could do:

Early Action
Undeclared
JMU specific essay
No financial need
brother current student

She’s got a 3.5w GPA. (his was 4.2) Test optional. Strong resume. 2 APs, a handful of honors. UGGGGGGG who knows. Waiting Waiting Waiting

EA were due by 11/1 so hopefully ppl didn’t pick up on the football success till after that…
@massachusettsfam my daughter has similar stats and this is her first choice. Because of the size of the university and the fact it’s public, I’m not sure siblings have an effect. Unfortunately mine is deferred from her brother’s school… Fortunately she’s not interested in going there… This is torture.

I’d be lying if I didn’t think the same thing about ESPN Game Day thankfully being after 11/1–phew! Torture for sure. Good luck to you…I feel sick to my stomach!

I’m interested in the game-theory behind when schools release their admits. My son applied everywhere EA (b/c of his winter sport schedule). Some of these schools are saying EA will hear in Feb/March. That is literally months after he has been accepted, with merit, to his other EA schools, which have been successful in selling their product to him -and us. If you are a school that replies to EA students late, you must not really want them -? Don’t want to read too much into that but by end of Jan, we have most of the school tours booked elsewhere, and our hearts are being won over by the early birds. Thoughts???

I’d be interested to hear how many EA applications the other schools you alluded to received. I know JMU got roughly 24,000 EA applications last year.

I’m of the opinion that all colleges and universities should move to a rolling admissions model similar to that of Pitt and Penn State. My son applied to both on October 31 and had a decision from Pitt (acceptance to main campus) on December 8, and Penn State (acceptance to main campus) on December 11. There’s literally no reason that other schools couldn’t do the same thing.

Some EA schools don’t release results until late February!

My daughter applied to 11 schools; all EA. She’s heard back from 7 of them. Waiting on: JMU, UMASS Amherst, UNH and Sacred Heart. All say mid-end of Jan.

When a university gains national attention through sports, it does appear the school attracts more attention from potential students.

Take Villanova for example. Their basketball team got a lot of attention in 2016 and 2018, and suddenly the applications increased.

For the fall 2015, the middle 50% SAT score was 1300-1430, 1370 average. 16,206 applicants. About 48% accepted. Prior to that time, I remember the average SAT being in the 1200s, and it not being very difficult to get in.

By 2019, the acceptance rate had dropped to 28%.

And now for fall 2022: 1400-1500, 1450 average. 23,811 applications. About 23% accepted. (They haven’t published fall 2023 yet.)

Like JMU, Villanova was historically just a school that attracted students from the surrounding region. But that changed. Very curious to see what happens with out-of-state admissions at JMU this year.
