Glad to see someone else who applied to more than 10 schools – my son applied to 15 (14 EA / 1 RD) and has heard from all except 6.
I know 15 sounds really excessive, but my wife and I just weren’t sure how colleges and universities would be evaluating kids in a post-pandemic world and we wanted to make sure that we gave him plenty of opportunities.
Totally. Last year my son applied to 15 as well! Got into 13 of them, including Penn State Smeal College of Business. Denied from Clemson and UMASS Amherst (our flagship state school–go figure–that one still bothers me) He chose JMU!
My daughter applied to 18 schools and 14 were EA and no ED….her thought process was she wanted to have options financially…but JMU is on the very top her list and she is at school today checking the portal every 10 mins something tells me it will be Tuesday though Good luck to you all!!!
Where else is has she gotten into? My daughter applied to 12. We are waiting for 4 more and she’s deferred at 2. I won’t be sad when this is over… my son was class of 22 and applied to 8. He was waiting for his final answer (deferral) till 3/25.
She has applied all over the map I feel lol…FSU, Auburn, Clemson, UGA, UMich, Wisconsin, Vermont, Maine, Berkley, USC and more…we are waiting on a bunch but mostly
A lot of deferrals…She got into Auburn, Maine, Vermont and Charleston so far…I won’t be sad when this is over either! I think we’ve both gotten ulcers from this whole process
100% agree. Some of our applications were received on 10/15. Seems the schools are waiting for the BBD (bigger better deal), or at least that is what is communicated if you’re waiting 4 months for a decision
She has gotten into: Westfield State (local state safety) Western New England University (local private safety), Marist College, Salve Regina, Penn State (satellite campus), Endicott, Merrimack (another local private). The rest are targets. JMU and UMASS Amherst are 1 and 2. UNH 3. UGH let this end soon.
In the past, JMU has frequently accepted only the top Virginia applicants in the early action round (and some out of state too), and deferred a ton to regular. But it seems many of those deferred get in later. So if you get a deferral, don’t lose hope.
Hi! We are OOS and we’ve never heard that before ? We know several who get in for EA with high stats . Hoping they give an update soon on decision day .
I edited to try to clarify. I didn’t mean that zero out of state people get in during early action, I meant that for in-state students, it seems that only the top get in early, and the rest get deferred, and many ultimately are accepted.
Scary stats! BTW your Villanova numbers are for class of 2026. The class of 2027 numbers were even tougher per the school website. Will be crazy to see how much harder JMU numbers are getting. Good luck to all!
Nova had a higher starting point (stats/rankings) and won 2 national championships. JMU is definitely going to get more eyeballs with football but they just lost their coach and are not a lock to become a perennial top 25 football program. My D24 is in PA and it has been trending more popular the past 5 years (69 applicants in 2020, 125 this year) from her high school.
Another thought. We are on our last kid. Our oldest kids always ended up at the school that they visited last, so if going to multiple admitted students days, we were thinking put the favorite last. Solidifies the choice to compare it that way. That is how it worked out for us…so maybe the schools know this and want to be the last school that you see…not the first. Just thinking out loud here as we anxiously await. DS has the stats to get in but we are OOS, so that always is a roll of the dice…
Wow, this is insightful! I have a one and only. School he most likes (now) is the first acceptance visit we are going on in Feb, and it will be COLD. But he’s an ice hockey player and the coach has invited him to a game and to stay over with the team. My guess is we’ll go back in the Spring to view the school when it looks nicer.
It might not be necessary. My son was admitted to the school he’s at now (sophomore) in Dec. He visited in March. He said as soon as he walked on campus he knew he was “home”. Here’s hoping your son gets the same vibe. First semester freshman year was a bit bumpy (adjustment) but he never waivered on feeling like he was at the right school.
Mine is a hockey player as well! He walked about Wisconsin in shorts and a hoodie in February and was wondering what all the fuss was about! JMU is a “southern school” for him!
