Does anyone know where I can find the number of people by Majors?
I mean specific, ie 10 people Electrial engr, 20 women studies, etc NOT 500 ppl in engr, 500 humanities etc.

Here, Brando, try this:

http://www.oir.uci.edu/enr/IIA02F-fall-enr-by-major-2005-08.pdf

Or if you wanted broken down even further:

http://www.oir.uci.edu/enr/IIA03-enr-by-major-and-class-stdng-2008-09.pdf

Jason, on a scale of 1-10, how hard is it to get into uci with a major of Biological Sciences? ty…

HEY EVERYONE! Thanks for continuing my thread! You guys are doing great, haha.

Akashanksta: I’ve taken a lot of GEs at community college so I’m cheating a bit. It was cheaper and closer to home so I decided to take them over summer. I’d seriously try Anthro 2A and 41A from Douglas. Easiest A’s ever. There are really a lot of good choices for GEs. Give me a private message or an instant message if you want to know specific classes. The best thing to do is see what is offered and do a pickaprof/ratemyprofessor background check on all the profs to see what’s easy.

csboy1:

if undecided/undeclared is 1 and engineering is 10, then biosci is a 7. I believe after engineering, the next hardest majors to get into is in the school of information and computer sciences. Then it’s biosci followed by physical sciences.

Hey everyone! So I haven’t really been around posting anymore, and it really might stay that way. If you send me a PM I’m sure I’ll answer them. You can always shoot me an e-mail at jasonat@uci.edu! This is sort of like my half-retirement post, haha. I got a lot on my plate nowadays so I’m not always chilling at my computer anymore. I hope everyone is working hard to get into the schools of their choice and to be successful in their major here at UCI. And for those EE/CpE majors out there, JOIN IEEE OR I WILL FIND YOU. Keep the questions and answers rolling you guys! SPREAD THE ANTEATER LOVE!

Actually, check out the Student Data on this web site:

[UC Irvine Office of Institutional Research](http://www.oir.uci.edu/)

It has the average HS GPA and SAT-I for applicants admitted to every school and major through Fall 2008.

Last year, the accepted applicants to Business and Nursing Science had the highest stats. But what’s striking to me is how little the averages vary. For example, the School of Education and School of Arts had the lowest average GPA (3.77), but that was only .05 lower than the university average (3.82).

I think the “hard” majors like Bio, Engineering, and ICS get their reputation more from their requirements to declare or transfer into those majors. And, probably, the fact that more folks drop out of them.

MaMoose, Jason , or any one else
please help me out here, would a 1920 SAT, 3.86 UCGpa and a 780 math II, 770 CHem
get me into UCI for CS?
i didn’t take ap compsci at my school

Hey amby262roy,

In a normal year, I’d say your chance was very good (>75%), but this year we’re seeing more than the usual chaos in the process (not just at UCI… Davis and Cal Poly as well, and I suspect more surprises are ahead next week when UCSD and UCSB join the party).

You’ve done a good job applying to a reasonable range of schools (okay, I may have advised you to add a strong safety to the mix, but that’s history). I know the waiting is stressful, but hang in there! I’ll keep my fingers crossed that by this time next week you’ll be in celebration mode.

And don’t worry about not taking AP Computer Science… UCI doesn’t give that much credit for it (see <a href=“UCI General Catalogue Archives”>http://www.editor.uci.edu/08-09/intro/intro.11a.pdf)… I think they prefer to shape young mind with their own intro sequence.

Ahhhhhh Uci is gonna kill me with anxiousness
So do I have an ‘ok’ shot for CS?

You’re more than okay, amby262roy.

Thank you MaMoose, thank you !!!

has uci start rejecting people yet??

cuz all i havent heard anyone who got rejected yet…

im from north cal, so i wont be commuting home on the weekends if i go to uc irvine. after reading the threads, it sounds like having a car if you go to uc irvine is a must. will your social life suffer if you dont have a car?

Hey MaMoose & Amby262roy,
I follow these threads for info even though I am a parent. My son got in as a CS major in the Donald Bren school. He has no prior programming classes. Is he going to be O.K.? He had many AP classes with scores so far of 4-5 and a 33 on the ACT. Not qute so good on the SATs Is the CS major impacted? He got rejected by UCSD and then accepted at Irvine. Maybe being OOS helped. They get more money from us. LOL

I took ICS 21 a year ago, the very first computer science course your son will most likely take at UCI. Despite taking two courses of programming in high school with 3 years of doing it as a hobby, I still consider ICS 21 difficult and hardly an introductory course.

However, I passed it easily (relative to my classmates) to get an A. Having prior experience in programming in JAVA will help A LOT and knowing how to do simple graphics means your son will already know 3/5 of the entire material. The other 2/5 involve WHY programming works which compared to programming itself is quite easy to understand although taking simple discrete mathematics will help, but not needed.

Whoa!! Maybe he should take something over the summer.

^^ ICS 21 (intro java I think it is) is VERY tough. I have friends that are in it and if you have NO exp. what so ever you are at a HUGE disadvantage.

I’m currently taking Fortran as an egnr major (no exp before) and its SUPER tough. Kids that have exp will be flying through. I seriously recommend gaining some (even if its limited) exp so you won’t kill yourself trying to get your code right before HW is due.

Hey Lucy55,

When you say your son hasn’t taken any programming classes, does that mean he hasn’t done any programming? If that’s the case, I’m curious how he came to decide on CS as a major.

Birdkiller and Brando are both correct that ICS 21 is challenging. The three-quarter sequence (ICS 21-22-23) is six credit hours each term and serves as the core curriculum for CS, ICS, and CSE majors.

Informatics majors take INFO 41, 42, 43. It’s also an intensive core curriculum (12 scheduled meeting hours per week for INFO 41), but assumes no prior experience in computer science or programming… but by the end of INFO 43, you WILL be a competent JAVA programmer and well versed on fundamental issues of computer science and software systems design.

If your son has no programming experience and plans to take the ICS 21-23 sequence, some exposure this summer (preferably to JAVA) would be very useful… if only to better judge whether or not this is the major he wants to dive into (because all the majors in the School of ICS really dive into their majors).

CS is not currently impacted at UCI, but it’s certainly acknowledged to be a challenging major.

QUESTION!

If u don’t have FAFSA, can u get aid from Irvine at all?

Oh boy, This may be a mistake. But better to find out now and let him decide whether he needs to change majors. He has an older brother that in in the engineering school at U of I in computer science. He did have programming in high school. (Java I think). Here is what the younger one is really interested in. This is a masters program:
ICIT
Yes he is a musican. But does extremely well in science classes also–physics, chemistry, math etc. and has the SAT scores to back that up. Musicians in general tend to have very good programming skills. My ex was a musician that ended up in IT and has done very well. If you look at this masters program above can you tell me what is the best preparation? I actually am surprised he got in the computer science program. I think he put a different major for every school he applied for. The major at UCSD was ICAM-Integrated computing for the arts and music. He was rejected there. He did have high test scores and possibly if he takes something over the summer he can be more prepared.
