jas0n's Official UCI Q&A Thread

Hey Lucy55,

Yeah, the ICAM program at UCSD would have been a terrific fit… too bad it’s such a tough year to get into that campus.

Let me ponder what might work at UCI… it’s weird how some master’s programs don’t propagate down to undergrad exposure.

What other schools is your younger son considering?

UCLA and USC (no word yet). He was accepted at U of I here in Illinois.

Do we get to keep the @uci.edu email address after graduation? I’d like to use it as long as possible.

Yes you do.

Can anyone is UCI’s honor program PM me and tell me more about it? Thanks a bunch!

bump 10 char

Hello Jas0n, I have a few questions regarding UCI.

1) What would you say would be a better experience as a freshman, co-ed or single-sex dorm rooms?

2) I am not allowed to drive next year, but is there a way I can travel somewhere over 2 hours drive away without having to drive or emptying my wallet?

3) Are there many opportunities to get a job nearby?

I’m sure there will be more to come. Thanks!

I have a question

1.) Parking is hella expensive and I want to bring my car. Is there like any way it can A.) lower the price or B.) park for FREE-lower cost?

1) What would you say would be a better experience as a freshman, co-ed or single-sex dorm rooms?
Co-ed, FTW. We somehow have the cleanest (no lie) bathroom in all of Middle Earth. Why would you not want to live near girls.

2) You can take the public bus (free if with your ID card) which DOES go to the amtrack/metrolink stations. I have used it once to go home. 1.5 hours by car nearly 2 hours by train b/c it stopped by union station.

3) if you keep looking/applying you CAN get a campus job. Don’t give up, although I will admit its pretty tough to get hired right now. Opportunies will come up–be on the look out for them.

Parking/Haiku
For this year its 225$ a quarter or nearly 700 (w/ taxes) for a 3 quarter academic year. There is NO way that it will be going down anytime soon. Friend said that the lady in charge wants people to go “green” which is why she prices are so much. As for lower costs–there’s no options that I am aware of. I suppose if you know someone in the off campus apartments (right next to campus) you could ask to use their parking slot. Ther’es really no way around this.

re: #1

i live in a co-ed suite and my girls’ bathroom is supposedly the dirtiest out of all the building bathrooms -_- seeing what i’ve seen i do not deny it’s possible

The parking and transportation situation at UCI is horrendous. The permit is crazy expensive, extremely restricted and harshly enforced. They are more proficient and are quicker at giving out tickets then just about anything! If they want to go greener instead of charging an arm and leg for a necessity for most people why not invest in the surrounding areas so people don’t need to drive anywhere and improve the regulations and access surrounding bikes on campus.

On that note, I love UCI =D

If you have work study a campus job will be easy. Without work study there are still opportunities, just keep your eye open. The bookstore was hiring recently and if you need a little intermittent cash I see postings for research subjects for Psych labs and such.(also some posts on EEE for this type of stuff)

because everything within walking distance around us is pretty much developed already haha. but at least we have some bike lanes…?

Ahaha BrandoIsCool, first off I’m a girl  Secondly, what about Mesa Court?

Also, would the train service be near UCSD/UCSB/UCLA, etc? Sorry I’m from Norcal so I have no idea how Socal is. Thank you very much!

i don’t believe mesa has co-ed suites the way ME does. but it doesn’t really makes a difference (single vs co-ed) because it’s not like you CAN’T walk to a guy’s room if you wanted to hang out.

as for the q about the train, i think you would have to look up the metro or amtrak lines and see where the stations are located but most likely you would have to have another form of transportation after the train (bus, etc)

Okay good point. Thank you!

One more really quick, my parents are keen on me attending UCI as a freshman early. So I’d be starting in Aug instead of Sept when most other freshmen start. Is this a bad idea? Any suggestions?

If by starting in August, you mean attending the Freshman Summer Start Program (FSSP), here’s a thread on that:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-irvine/689692-uci-fssp.html

Oh okay, that’s probably what my parents meant. My bad, thanks

Are there any UCI Nursing Science transfers (either already transferred or will be transferring)? Or if anyone knows anyone…please ask them about what classes they took, and just any information/tips!
Thanks!

applexjuice, you’re going to have a tough time finding those folks to talk to… there’s only 4 of them at UCI… the nursing program is new, and this year (Fall 2009) is the first that they’ll admit transfer students in any real number (and by “real” we’re talking about 25).

Mesa Does Not co-ed dorms.I believe that only Middle Earth has them. Girls/Guys get their own bathroom (unless your in one of the older buildings, and i think you have to share). Train does go to UCSD and UCSB and all the way up to norcal too.

I totally recommend FSSP, I did it and I found it to be awesome! BTW, I do not recommend doing the seminar Soc Sci 89. It was not helpful at all.
