I thought James was a math major at UIUC.
Another example of how most school districts fail bright students.
He aced the tests but failed to do the trivial work. He didn’t fail Naperville. Naperville failed to provide an adequate education.
James was indeed a math major at at Illinois. Though he’s said his “ real major” was online poker. But how did NN fail him? There are classes there that are challenging even for brilliant kids. They will work with kids to do independent study. As James himself has said if he doesn’t want to do something he just won’t work at it. No matter what, some people no matter how smart just don’t like school, they don’t like the routine, they don’t like the rules. This doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be routine and rules. I think one of the reason Janes is a professional gambler is that it doesn’t require him to deal with a work place.
The contestant Faisan tonight seems to be holding the button in his fist and intently tying to push the buzzer.
Me too. And I knew pergola too. I’m still not over him not knowing the Mary Poppins category. Just proves he’s human.
The only way he’ll be beaten is by the others controlling the daily doubles and getting them right. It also helps when one of the other two players doesn’t get much at all and the second can get a lot of questions, the daily doubles, and get to ~$20 grand before Final. That’s what the guy did a week ago and almost won.
But close only counts in horseshoes and hand-grenades…
@MaterS, while I understand the commuting distance isn’t great and students may go home often, as maya54 stated, I still know gifted students and their families who ruled out IMSA because it’s a residential school. It was not appealing to them. These are PI+ kids, who later went on to U of Chicago, Berkeley, MIT, etc from Naperville high schools and majored in STEM. Mrs. Moore, the AP BC Calc and MV Calculus teacher, is outstanding. I disagree that “Naperville failed to provide an adequate education”.
Typical CC thread going OT. Who cares about IMSA, this is about James winning on Jeopardy.
A little less than $200,000 from Ken Jennings total.
IMSA- isn’t that where Annasdad’s dau went? Oops, off topic. Just strolling down memory lane…
I can’t believe no one knew “Madam Secretary”.
At least in math competitions, Naperville North’s probably the top school in Illinois. And if it’s not NN, it’s Stevenson or Whitney Young, not IMSA.
It’d be very rare for a student at in NN’s district to go to IMSA.
I’m amazed at how strong James is with the geography questions. I would fail miserably on this show. Well, actually I would never make it on the show to start with.

I think he clearly has a photographic memory. and that likely helps a lot when it comes to Geography. He also loves “low” culture and that gives him assistance on things like the Sponge Bob question. Those things are harder to study so a contestant who has a natural interest in this is going to have an advantage
DS’s high school math team was in the same league as both Naperville schools - they were top competitors. Different years than James though.
@CottonTales
There were several posts a few pages back about James physical appearance. How is that about winning? His education affects his winning more than his teeth.
For the record, I am not bashing NNHS. I think grades should rely more on final test scores than busywork.
Jeopardy is a game and I’m glad people are seeing/experiencing the fun with Jeopardy James…including Ken Jennings.

I understand that many people are tuning into the game because of Holzahauer. But good as he is, I’m getting tired of watching him rack up the money. The game seems less interesting as he is always so far ahead by early in the second half. I wish there were term limits.
Unless the ratings drop as opposed to rise as they are doing it would be against the shows interest to listen to the minority who feel like you do @Barbalot, so those sort of rules seem unlikely.
Some people just want to punish success I guess.
