Jeopardy and James Holzhauer, anyone watching?

There is so many camaraderie between James and ken

Hey! Ken answered the audible with the correct response - Rachel Maddow, but he didn’t put it in the form of a question! And no one seemed to catch it. He said “Rachel Maddow??” but didn’t say “who is…”Shouldn’t he be penalized for that (ie not get credit for the answer).

Even stranger to me was that Alex admitted he interrupted Brad prematurely in his answer, which then allowed Ken to get points for the answer.

I noticed that one of the commercials tonight provided a spoiler. Anyone else catch that?

I didn’t watch the commercial. What was the spoiler?

I don’t want to give anything away. I will PM you if you really want to know.

Wish I were in Vegas and could have attended the Watch party with James. 75 bucks…money to benefit homeless teens in Vegas.

I thought I just didn’t hear it right @jym626. It’s strange that they didn’t bring it up and adjust the points like they always do, especially considering the match yesterday was only a 200 point difference.

I went back to listen to the Rachel Maddow / audible question. It sounded to me like Ken said a very abbreviated, unarticulated “Who’s” at the beginning of his response.

I have noticed that in recent years they haven’t been sticklers for the question format for regular Jeopardy. The show, like real life, will be imperfect. I am happy to see all of the players being nice. They have all won huge amounts and it is good to see none of them are only out for the cash but seem to enjoy the challenge and having fun.

I like that there are two different winners the first two days. Brad seems outclassed so I doubt it will be a seven day tournament. We forget how intense it is for the players- two games is so much more than just the one at a time. I wonder how things will be as time goes on- needing to be “up” for a prolonged time… Will fatigue mean more errors? Or will they have hit their strides? So much more than just the game.

I caught an ad for a future show but they were vague enough about its starting date.

Ken did say that the double game format is tiring. Yes, they are used to recording 5 shows in a day, but it’s not a continuation of the same game, having to add both scores. I find it tiring just watching the full hour (plus our ‘regular’ game is on just before the GOAT shows).

Anyone know whether these were taped on the same day? Or over how many days?

Typically, Alex would remind contestants in the first round to phrase answer in a form of a question with no penalty. Then in the double jeopardy, Alex would not say anything but an answer not in the form of a question would not count.

In this tournament, the pace is quick and all three contestants have answered a ton of questions so the focus may not be as much on the answer in form of question rule.

Brad is the big surprise to me. I have talked with several people who, when they saw promotional pic/video for this tournament, asked who Brad was and why he was included in the tournament. But prior to this tournament, Brad had never lost a Jeopardy game/match (other than coming in third when he and Ken got routed by the computer Watson). Won over $4.5 million on Jeopardy and only $55k of that was on regular jeopardy. He will still have more career winnings on Jeopardy even if he does not win this tournament. So he has been very successful in multiple different Jeopardy tournaments. Including the recent All-Star tournament (that aired about a year ago?). But so far he has looked out of sorts. Not first to ring in many times. But even when he does, he is also missing answers. And daily doubles. Missing questions loses out on money/points, gives opportunities for other players to get money/points and loses/doesn’t take control of the board.

From what has happened so far, looks like James will win if he finds daily doubles. If not, Ken stands a great chance. Doesn’t appear Brad will win a match (much less the tournament) which I think most people would find most surprising. Though things could change (though not really because the results are already known because the event happened already which is odd when you watch taped contests when so many contests we see regularly are live).

I’ve been really surprised at Brad’s performance. I expected him to be much more competitive, but even he said in the interview during game #1 that age is affecting his recall of facts/trivia.

The only way James doesn’t win is if he doesn’t get any daily doubles. If that happens, then Ken definitely has a good chance.

I hope that Brad wins at least one night.

Question: Do they add the total earnings at the end and declare the winner? Or they just count the number of wins?

Last night was fun. The one question about the next movie line, i screamed “Good Day, sir!”. But none of them knew!

For this competition, IIRC, the best 3 of 7 wins $1M

Point differential in the matches doesn’t matter. You could lose the first 2 matches by 50,000 points each (and even be in negative territory each match) and then win the next 3 matches by 1 point each and be the champion.

Hope to see Brad join the competition. He has 1/2 the daily doubles and James and Ken have 1/4 of them each. If you told someone that is how the first two matches would go, I think they would expect Brad to have won at least one match if not both. And if you said that two competitors were close and the third wasn’t really in the first 2 matches, I think most people would have guessed Ken would be the one not competing.

Yesterday morning, James tweeted something to the effect: Jeopardy tournaments won: Brad – 5, James – 1, Donald Trump and Ken – 0. He knows the answer at this point as to whether Ken and the Donald will remain tied. He and Ken went back and forth a little online the weekend before James was expected to beat Ken’s $$ record (but ultimately didn’t). James obviously knew he didn’t beat the record at the time of the trash talk but I am not sure if Ken did.

I don’t think so because its accurate (as to shows that have aired). Had he said Brad–5, James --2 and Ken/Trump – 0 it may be problematic in terms of his contract. Because that would be disclosing results that have not yet been shown on air.
