First of all, HAPPY CANADA DAY to all who celebrate.
Plans for this holiday week? Guests? Food? Trips? Fireworks? Vacation? Special drinks or desserts? Cooking out, eating out? Do you have an extended weekend if you work or do you have to work on the 5th??
Our two out of town kids + one spouse and one dog will come home for a few days. Plans include lots of time around the pool if the weather cooperates and a traditional July 4th cookout. For some reason the typical homemade baked beans, some type of potato salad/pasta salad and simple stuff on the grill sounds amazing.
We won’t go to any fireworks but should be able to see 1 or 2 shows from our deck. Fireworks are ok to me. Fun for a few minutes. Not fun for the dogs though.
We were supposed to go up to our camp tomorrow with friends, but the wife just tested positive for COVID. They could have stayed only through Thursday afternoon. So now we will go up Wednesday morning and come home Saturday night. Usually someone up there puts on a pretty good fireworks show on a floating platform in a pond near our cabin. We’re also going to have an informal get-together if anyone is interested. It’s nice being up there, because except for the formal show, there are no fireworks to bother the dogs.
One of our neighbors puts on an over the top fireworks show every Independence Day. This year is the last time he’s doing it, and he tells me it’ll be the biggest ever. For a private display, it’s insane. It rivals many public displays, and we have front row seats watching it over the Puget Sound.
We have friends and family coming from near and far to take it in. Our oyster beds are overflowing and crabbing season starts today, so we’ll be having a seafood extravaganza.
@sherpa definitely has the best Fourth plans! We will have a small dinner with the friends we have not seen in a while. Weather is supposed to be pretty nice!
We are currently traveling back to ME from a week in MI at my brother’s lake house where we stayed to attend a family memorial. My mom is returning with us for a week, but the best is that our DIL texted yesterday to ask if they could drive up from MD for the 4th! That makes the holiday for us. We’ll have cocktails, lobster, corn-on-the-cob, and roasted redskins and then go to our lakeside creamery for ice cream. Can’t wait!
We watched fireworks on the lake from my brother’s boat Saturday night. Have never done that, so it was fun. Otherwise, we skip the noise and crowds.
Where is the Michigan lakehouse located? My mother-in-law used to have a cottage on Lake Huron which we visited every summer; and whenever we were there for July 4th, we would go into the local town for the 4th of July parade, eat at the cookout hosted by the local Methodist church, and park our lawn chairs along the parade route so that we could catch a charming slice of Americana.
Our daughter might be busy next weekend. So she did a spur of the moment suggestion to meet for dinner last night near her (an hour away). We said “sure”, hopped in the car 10 min later. In a few weeks we’ll see the Boston son and his wife. Life is good.
We’re having a mini-reunion of grad school friends at the Jersey shore. If we’re lucky we’ll get two days of fireworks. Definitely will have lots of good food and board games.
We’re between trips to visit family so it will just be my husband and I. I plan to make my traditional 4th meal of bbq (the Southern pulled pork kind, made in the Instant Pot), fresh corn on the cob, blueberries, watermelon and some fresh vegetable yet to be decided. And then I’ll spend the evening comforting the dog as he freaks out over people in our neighborhood shooting off fireworks.
DD and SIL will be here for the fourth. We are helping with a triathlon on the 6th and the organizers and two of their friends are also staying here. I’m planning the meal…since burgers etc are being served at the tri, I think I’ll make pulled pork, coleslaw, corn on the cob, and some sliced raw veggies. I have a bumble berry pie for dessert to bake (three kinds of berries and apple! It’s delicious!). Trying to talk DH into making home made vanilla ice cream!
We will watch fireworks at our beach on our lake. Lots of good fireworks all around. And just enough!
I’m working on the 5th and 6th. D19 works in a restaurant and has to work the evening of July 4th.
S23 and S21 are going to the beach (my parents have a house there) with their girlfriends on Wed night. That left just me and H home on the 4th. We sponsor midshipmen at the Naval Academy, one of whom just graduated. He is in town for the summer so we invited him over for dinner. H is going to smoke some ribs, then we will walk down the street to watch fireworks over the Bay.
H will go down to the beach Saturday morning. He has a pass to drive onto the beach at Assateague so he and our boys and their girlfriends will spend the day there with a bonfire at sunset. I will head down after work with D19 (I have Sun and Mon off). Boys will head home Sun while H, D19 and I will head back home early Tues morning.
My brother has a beautiful place on White Lake (White Lake Township) and a fun pontoon boat with a built-in Margarita blender. We plan to return (to look for our lost shaker of salt).
Who has some vegetarian options for the grill recipes? SIL is vegetarian and I know I can get fake meat burgers or whatever but looking for additional ideas. I was reading about grilled tofu… along with peppers to go with some fresh tortillas and toppings - anyone grilled tofu before? What kind of tofu should I look for??
Maine is equally awesome and hosting family is always wonderful.
Blessedly no plans. Just got back from a very hot island vacation so I’m enjoying wearing pants and a sweater today. Am playing mahjong with neighbors today and golf I’m sure will be on the agenda.
Youngest is flying to Dallas to spend 4th with a college roommate - other one is flying in from Boston, they’ll do the Bush Library and School Book Depository Museum plus fireworks at Fair Park. Middle son is going to Joshua Tree for few day with buddies over the 4th (yikes, hot stuff!!! I don’t get desert even when not super hot). Oldest son hanging in Colorado where he lives and it is beautiful and cool. DH and I will take his dad and wife for BBQ somewhere then go to our subdivision fireworks display hoping nothing catches fire. Kind of dull for us.
