just for fun: the advertising practice on college forum sites

I have always wondered about the universities that buy advertising on CC college sites. They never made sense to me.

For instance, in this U Chicago forum, the universities that are advertising themselves are no where near the U Chicago in terms of the target students. It’s a different population all together. Like, a mean SAT for incoming freshmen in the 1100 (out of 1600). I went to a couple of U Chicago peer universities/colleges forum sites. Same story. Universities with a mean score of 1000 (out of 1600) advertising on sites for Stanford, MIT, etc.

A first rule of buying ad is the relevance of target population. That’s why TV ad slots are heavily monitored for the demographic makeup of the views of the program.

Basically, all these universities that are paying money to advertise themselves to a target population that have probably no intention to ever consider them as a potential choice is completely wasting money.

Any thoughts? Just curious, and I have too much time on my hand this evening, obviously   :)

The ad’s probably are shown all over the forums, not just the UChicago page. And many people turn down the “higher schools” for other less known schools for specific programs/opportunities that the “higher school” doesn’t offer. Lower tuition could also be a deciding factor.
